2. Allen Bradley PLC family. SLC and Micrologix.

2.1. SLC 500 FAMILY OVERVIEW The Allen-Bradley SLC 500 is Rockwell Automations small chassis-based, modular family of programmable controllers (PLCs) and chassis-based I/O. It consists of processors, I/O and peripheral devices. This processor family delivers power and flexibility with a wide range of communication configurations, features, and memory options.

The SLC processor module in a 1746 platform provides a proven approach for industrial control. SLC processors are available in a wide range of functional design, and can be connected in a wide variety of networks for distributed processing and distributed I/O. The 1746 I/O products offer a full range of digital and analog I/O (including intelligent I/O) in a rugged modular assembly. Built-in 20, 30, or 40 I/O with the fixed-hardware controllers. Modularity of I/O, memory and communication interfaces provides a configurable and expandable system. You configure your system for the number of I/O, the amount of memory, and the communication networks you need. Later, when you want to expand the system, you can add I/O, memory, or communication interfaces. Fast delivery of messages between networks, between links within networks, and between modules across the backplane. Industrial-hardened hardware platform is designed to withstand the vibrations, thermal extremes, and electrical noise associated with harsh industrial environments.

Compact design of hardware lets it fit in limited panel space. Distributed processing is possible by connecting processors across Ethernet, ControlNet, DeviceNet, DH+, and DH-485 networks. Distributed I/O at locations remote from the processor can be connected across ControlNet, DeviceNet, and Universal Remote I/O links. Functional Design. SLC processors are available in a large range of forcible I/O (4096 inputs plus 4096 outputs maximum) and maximum user memory (1K instructions thru 64K words). Several modular processors are capable of controlling remotely located I/O. By adding an I/O scanner module, you can use these processors to monitor/control these remotely located I/O across ControlNet, DeviceNet, and Universal Remote I/O links. Mechanical Design. The 1746 platform provides the choice of a fixed-hardware system and a modular-hardware system. The fixed-hardware SLC processors have 20, 30, or 40 built-in digital I/O. By adding an expansion chassis, you can add 2 modules for a maximum of 64 additional I/O. The SLC processors for modular systems are single-slot modules that you place into the left-most slot of a 1746 I/O chassis. For 1746 I/O in a location remote from the processor, the I/O adapter is a single-slot modules that you place into the left-most slot of a 1746 I/O chassis. The 1746 I/O chassis are built for back-panel mounting. The 1746 I/O chassis is available in sizes of 4, 7, 10, or 13 module slots. The 1746 I/O modules are available in densities of a maximum of 32 I/O per module. You can configure a system with one, two, or three local chassis, for a total of 30 local I/O or communication modules maximum. You connect multiple local chassis together with chassis interconnect cables to extend the backplane signal lines from one chassis to another. This same 30 I/O-module limit applies to a chassis remote from the processor with an I/O adapter module in the first slot. Modules slide easily into chassis slots; no tools are required for module installation. For many modules, because you wire to a removable terminal block that unplugs from the module, you do not need to disconnect wiring to replace an I/O module. The fixed-hardware SLC processors have built-in power supplies. For modular SLC systems, separate power supplies are available and can be mounted directly on the left end of the 1746 I/O chassis. Communication. An SLC processor communicates across the 1746 backplane to 1746 I/O modules in the chassis in which the processor resides. Various models of SLC processors have various on-board ports for communication with other processors or computers. Also, separate modules are available to provide additional communication ports for communication with other processors, computers, and remotely located I/O. Each SLC processor has one or two built-in ports for either EtherNet/IP, DH+, DH-485, or RS232 (DF1, ASCII, OR DH-485 protocol) communication. In addition to the on-board ports available with SLC processors, you have the option of providing another communication port for an SLC processor by adding a communication module. I/O adapter modules for 1746 I/O are available for ControlNet and Universal Remote I/O links. An I/O adapter module in a chassis with I/O modules interfaces the I/O modules with the I/O link for communication with a scanner port for a processor at another location. SLC 5/05 processors include a built-in web server that lets you use an Internet browser to view processor module information, TCP/IP configuration, and diagnostic information. Domain Name Server (DNS) capability lets you address the SLC 5/05 processor by a user-specified name rather than its IP address. (DNS capability requires RSLogix 500, version 5.20 or later.)

SLC Processors

The SLC processors offer a wide range of choices in memory, I/O capacity, instruction set, and communication ports to allow you to tailor a control system to your exact application requirements. These products have a strong reliability history covering hundreds of thousands of installations in a broad range of applications. SLC 500 processors offer 20, 30, or 40 fixed digital I/O. By adding an expansion chassis, you can add 2 I/O modules for a maximum of 64 additional I/O. SLC 5/01 processors let you configure modular controllers of up to 960 I/O and a 1K- or 4Kinstruction memory capacity. SLC 5/02 processors let you configure modular controllers of up to 4096 inputs plus 4096 outputs nominally and a 4K-instruction memory. By installing an optional scanner module into one of the 30 I/O module slots, you can add ControlNet I/O, DeviceNet I/O, or Universal Remote I/O to the system. They offer 19 additional instructions, including a message instruction for initiating peer-to peer communication. SLC 5/03 processors let you configure modular controllers of up to 4096 inputs plus 4096 outputs and a memory of 8K or 16K words. In addition to the features of the SLC 5/02, they have a second built-in communication port - an RS-232-C port that can be configured for ASCII or DF1 protocol, and can be configured for connection to a 1761-NET-AIC converter to provide access to a DH-485 network. SLC 5/03 processors provide bit-instruction execution times of 0.44s and an overall system throughput of up to 10 times faster than competitive processors. Additional capabilities include: floating-point math, online programming and run-time editing, flash memory upgrades, built-in key-switch, and a built-in real-time clock and calendar. SLC 5/04 and 5/05 processors let you configure modular controllers of up to 4096 inputs plus 4096 outputs and a memory of either 16K, 32K, or 64K words. They have all the features of the SLC 5/03 processors, plus a faster communication port and shorter execution times (bit-instruction execution times of 0.37s). Instead of a DH-485 port, the SLC 5/04 has a built-in DH+ port for communication with other SLC 5/04 and PLC processors, operator interfaces, and programming terminals. Communication via the DH+ network is three times faster than DH-485 communication. SLC 5/05 processors provide a 10BASE-T 10M-bit/s Ethernet port.

The absolute maximum number of I/O for these processors only reflects the I/O addressing capability. It does not take into account the amount of memory that may be required for a ladder-logic program to monitor and control the I/O. The practical ratio of memory per I/O is totally dependant upon your specific application. 2 You cannot configure this number of I/O for these processors with local I/O only. To configure this number of I/O for these processors, you must add a 1747-SN Remote I/O Scanner module to configure I/O on a Universal Remote I/O link, add a 1747-SDN DeviceNet Scanner module to configure I/O on a DeviceNet network and/or add a 1747-SCNR ControlNet Scanner module to configure I/O on a ControlNet network. 3 I/O chassis - a physical assembly that houses I/O. 4 With this processor, you can also install a 1747-SN Remote I/O Scanner module to configure I/O on a Universal Remote I/O link and/or add a 1747-SDN DeviceNet Scanner module to configure I/O on a DeviceNet network. You can configure 32 I/O chassis per Universal Remote I/O scanner using complementary I/O. If you don't use complementary I/O, you can configure 16 I/O chassis per Universal Remote I/O scanner. With the DeviceNet scanner, you can address a maximum of 63 DeviceNet devices over the DeviceNet network. 5 An SLC 500 or SLC 5/01 processor can only receive messages and send reply messages to command messages sent from other nodes on the DH-485 network; it cannot initiate communication. 6 The SLC 5/03 has an RS-232 port, which can also be configured for a DH-485 network, enabling the SLC-5/03 to connect to two DH-485 networks simultaneously. 7 The SLC 5/04 and SLC 5/05 have an RS-232 port, which can also be configured for a DH-485 network.

Allow outputs on the same unit to switch different control voltages. The 25-I/O models include 4 analog inputs and an analog output in addition to the 12 digital inputs and the 8 digital (contact) outputs The MicroLogix 1000 programmable controller is a packaged controller containing a power supply, input circuits, output circuits, and a processor. The catalog number for the controller is composed of the following: The hardware features of the controller are:

Communication Point-to-Point - RS-232 communication port configurable for direct connection to your programming device. DH-485 - RS-232 communication port configurable for DH-485 communication thru an AIC+ (1761-NET-AIC) converter. Lets you communicate with SLC processors, other MicroLogix controllers, operator interfaces, or programming devices in a DH-485 network. EtherNet/IP - RS-232 communication port configurable for EtherNet/IP communication thru an EtherNet/IP-to-RS-232 interface (1761-NET-ENI). The EtherNet/IP-to-RS-232 interface module supports program monitoring and upload/download, data collection from PCs or mainframes, and controller peer-to-peer communication. It can also send e-mail messages via SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol), and can display status and configuration information thru a built-in Internet server. DeviceNet - RS-232 communication port configurable for communication thru a DevicNet interface (1761-NET-DNI) to let the controller function as a slave node in a DeviceNet network or as a peer to other controllers also using the 1761-NET-DNI interface. DF1, half-duplex - RS-232 communication port configurable for DF1 half-duplex slave protocol for connection to a modem in SCADA applications. 2.3. PRINCIPLES OF MACHINE CONTROL The controllers consist of a power supply, central processing unit (CPU), inputs or inputs modules, which you wire to input devices (such as pushbuttons, proximity sensors, limit switches), and outputs or output modules, which you wire to output devices (such as motor starters, solidstate relays, and indicator lights).

With the logic program entered into the controller, placing the controller in the Run mode initiates an operating cycle. The controllers operating cycle consists of a series of operations performed sequentially and repeatedly, unless altered by your program logic.

input scan the time required for the controller to scan and read all input data; typically accomplished within mseconds.

program scan the time required for the processor to execute the instructions in the program. The program scan time varies depending on the instructions used and each instructions status during the scan time.

Note Subroutine and interrupt instructions within your logic program may cause deviations in the way the operating cycle is sequenced.

output scan the time required for the controller to scan and write all output data; typically accomplished within mseconds. service communications the part of the operating cycle in which communication takes place with other devices, such as an HHP or personal computer. housekeeping and overhead time spent on memory management and updating timers and internal registers. You enter a logic program into the controller using a programming device (software). The logic program is based on your electrical relay print diagrams. It contains instructions that direct control of your application.
