more details Who is it for? Staff delivering or preparing to deliver functional skills in English and/or Maths Outcomes: This five session, intensive training course will equip you with the necessary skills, practical knowledge and resources to enable you to tackle the challenge of classroom delivery of functional maths and English. The course covers generic themes in sessions one and five, with specific input relevant to either Functional maths or English in sessions two, three and four with resources and teaching approaches modelled by the tutors. After the first generic session participants can choose to follow either the English or maths specialist route.

Training outline:
The first workshop introduces some key messages about Functional Skills and related teaching approaches that underpin the delivery of the course. These are then explored in different ways within the two specialist strands of the course: the importance of developing Personal Learning and Thinking Skills alongside Functional Skills problem solving strategies active learning approaches integrated approaches to delivery revision strategies use of e-learning tools

Functional English specialist route three sessions covering:


a review of the demands of FE assessments active learning approaches to developing reading and writing developing awareness of context, audience and purpose planning a piece of writing and organising ideas exploring grammar: sentence structure, connectives, common errors tips on supporting with spelling use of e-learning tools Throughout the programme a integrating speaking and listening skills

Trainer Profiles: Julia Smith


Julia is a Subject Specialist with Ofqual for Functional Skills as well as being a Development Adviser for ACER (Association of Colleges in the Eastern Region) delivering bespoke functional skills training within the Eastern Counties. She also teaches functional and GCSE maths at a pupil referral unit in Ipswich. Julia has also spent time working with City and Guilds developing their functional skills qualifications, has authored for Heinemann and Braingames too. Prior to this she was Curriculum Manager at Colchester Institute. She has also worked upon the Standards Unit materials, undertaken projects for the National Maths Centre, NCETM and is currently the Maths Portal Manager for the Open University.

Bob Read
Bob originally trained as a Special Needs teacher in secondary schools but in recent years has worked extensively in the post 16 sector as a literacy subject specialist. He currently works as a Training and Development Adviser for ACER (Association of Colleges in the Eastern Region), supporting staff who offer Skills for Life and Functional Skills programmes in colleges of FE, adult and community learning, private training providers, prisons and Young Offender Institutions.
