WOC Final Review 2011-12Spring Semester

Your final is a Gains test, similar to what you had for the first semester final. Your best resource for studying is your WREN book. Please go back over your green and yellow WREN books and practice those skills. You should know the following things: Magic Lens Know clauses and clause patterns. They help you punctuate appropriately. I = Independent Clause (Subject + Verb + Complete Thought) D=Dependent Clause (Missing one or more of: Subject + Verb + Complete Thought) USUALLY BEGINS WITH AN ABBI!!!!

Basic Configurations for Sentences: 1. I = Sally saw seashells. 2. ID = Sally saw seashells while Peter picked peppers. 3. D , I = Before Peter picked peppers, Sally saw seashells. 4. WREN 16-19 and 20-23 Review

Conventions of Punctuation 16-19 1. Review and know the 7 basic comma rules 2. Know the difference between commas, parentheses, and dashes 3. Know how and when to use quotation marks 4. Organization 16-19 1. Make sure to READ the passages!!! That will help you to add a sentence in logical places. 20-23 1. Use conjunctive adverbs to show relationships. (MEL-Con) Topic Development 16-19 1. Know these terms: A. Topic Development: when the main idea is explained thoroughly B. Main Idea: the idea discussed in a paragraph or text C. Purpose: the reason the writer writes a sentence, paragraph, or text --purpose of each sentence / paragraph = support main idea --Writing might be to inform, persuade, or entertain = Identify the purpose D. Transitions: signs to your reader pick the right one E. Introductions: set up your argument F. Conclusions: wrap up ideas 20-23 1.
