The Pastors Corner

Enable us to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ to all whom we meetMake St. Francis Church a place of invitation and welcome. Prayer
for St. Francis Episcopal Church - Eureka

Each week we pray for the witness, renewal, and growth of our parish family, St. Francis in Eureka. Part of that prayer, included above, asks that we be given the grace to carry Gods message of love to everyone we encounter. St. Francis Church is putting this prayer into action; were giving it not just lip service but foot service. On May 12 and May 19, a pair of us walked the Mirasol and Ashton Woods neighborhoods, ringing doorbells and inviting people to worship with us. We handed out our brochure and a flier about the October 6 pet blessing. We left thumb drives, which contain a link to our website and a description of each of our ministries. But it was about much more than just placing papers in peoples hands. For a few moments, doors literally were opened for us. It gave us a chance to offer an invitation to come, to be with us at St. Francis. It gave us a chance to learn a bit about who lives in these neighborhoods, whether they have a church home (some do), whether they have pets and kids (many do). We exchanged smiles and tidbits of information. One kind woman had her young son bring us cold bottles of water. Will we get new members from these efforts? Maybe, maybe not. But thats not the point. The point is that we are casting bread on the waters. Well let God determine whether our casting for people results in catching them. We are letting people know about the worshipful, welcoming Episcopal Church in Eureka. We are spreading the love of God one household at a time. It is a grace-filled, holy experience to gaze into the eyes of strangers and meet Christ there.

Stroke Awareness
Stroke is a disease that affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. It is the No. 4 cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the United States. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood (and oxygen) it needs, so it starts to die. Stroke risk factors are:

Atrial fibrillation Poor diet Physical inactivity and obesity

American Stroke Association warning signs of stroke: F face droop (ask the person to smile) A arm drift (have the person raise both arms; one may drift downward) S slurred speech (ask the person to read or say a sentence) T time to call 911 Other warning signs:

Age 55 or older Cigarette smoking Prior stroke, TIA (transient ischemic attack a "warning stroke" that produces stroke-like symptoms that resolve or disappear on their own) or heart attack Family history of stroke Race African-Americans have a much higher risk of death from a stroke than Caucasians Gender Stroke is more common in men until women experience menopause High blood pressure Diabetes Heart or blood vessel disease High cholesterol Sickle cell disease

Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding Trouble seeing in one or both eyes Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination Sudden severe headache with no known cause

If you suspect a stroke, do not delay calling 911. Do not rest, thinking your condition will improve. Do not drive to the Emergency Room. Do not go to your doctors office. Get an ambulance. Time is critical. Medical treatment is required immediately. The sooner a person is treated, the better the chances of minimizing the effects of the stroke.

Confirmation
The history of the sacrament of confirmation, as a separate rite from baptism, is convoluted, to say the least. Here is a thumbnail sketch: From early times, the Church designated bishops as the ordinary ministers of baptism, a rite with a threefold action--the water rite (immersion in water, or else the pouring of it), imposition of hands with anointing, and first communion. Over time, and as the Church grew in numbers, the bishops began to delegate this rite to the presbyters (priests). In the Eastern Church, the bishops delegated the rite in its entirety; in the West, the bishops retained for themselves the imposition of hands, while delegating the other two actions. The baptismal rite in our Prayer Book essentially puts in place the pattern from the Christian East, with the water rite, anointing and/or imposition of hands, with at least the possibility of first communion, all in one service. And all this pattern applies, whether the presider is a bishop or a priest. With this being the case, why then does the Episcopal Church retain imposition of hands by a bishop, in a separate rite of confirmation? There are three good pastoral reasons for doing so. First, in a Church which practices the baptism of young children and infants, these people need, in their maturity, a solemn occasion to stand in front of God and everybody and reaffirm the promises once made on their behalf. Second, in a Church which attracts Christians from other communities of belief, there needs to be an occasion for these people to make solemn reaffirmation of baptism and its meaning, with the intent to live these vows henceforth in this Church. Third, the pastoral presence and human touch of a bishop remind everyone present that the Church extends beyond the merely local into diocesan community, into the whole of the Episcopal Church, and into the Church catholic. The opening sentences in the introductory material to the Prayer Book rite of baptism read: Holy Baptism is full initiation by water and the Holy Spirit into Christs Body the Church. The bond which God establishes in Baptism is indissoluble. (BCP, 298) Confirmation adds nothing to baptism, but it remains a necessary pastoral sacrament. Episcopalians are right to hold it in such high value.

Bishops Committee News

Highlights of the

The Bishops Committee will devote the June Bishops Committee meeting to processing the information and beginning to form a plan. Ministerial alliance Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eureka contacted Pastor Sally about starting up a Travelers Aid system among the churches of Eureka. Pastor Sally responded immediately that St. Francis would like to be involved in this kind of ecumenical ministry. Door-to-door evangelism We have started this initiative with action! Pastor Sally and Steve Strathearn spent time in the Marisol Subdivision. On another Saturday, Pastor Sally and Barb Sacco went to the Ashton Woods subdivision. In each case, two people from St. Francis went door-to-door introducing themselves and the church to the neighbors. The minute-long meetings were low-key presentations of information, a friendly introduction to new neighbors, and an invitation to visit us for worship. They also gave pet blessing information to most households. Each session took about an hour. Nursery worker. Ellen Sacco, our nursery worker for the last two years is going off to college, but will be working with us through the summer. Suzanne Jones is putting up a job notice at the Community College. The job pays $9/hour, 3 hours /week. E-mails to entire parish. A reminder to us all: Please send only through the parish secretary.

Bishops Committee Meeting

Opening business

Opening prayer; sharing of joys and concerns Approval of April 15 minutes.

Treasurers report Finance Committee: Committee will meet in June to determine if the budget for 2012 needs any mid-year adjustment. Audit update: There is a member of St. Marks who is a professor at UMSL who will meet with Pastor Sally to see if a fraternal accounting organization at UMSL might do our audit with appropriate supervision. The proposed audit meets the diocesan guidelines. Since the audit can be done effectively by the students, it will save us a great deal of money. The Treasurer presented the financial information and commentary for the month of April. The report was accepted as presented. Vicars report Church Assistance Endowment Grant A request for $200 for a chair rack to store our chairs at the Lodge has been submitted. We dont yet know the results of our request. Matching funds will be accepted (see related article in this issue of The Chalice). Strategic Planning Our Adult Forum meetings have been devoted to strategic planning for the past 6 weeks. The meetings have produced a lot of data.

Vicars Vacation dates: Mon.-Wed., May 28-30 (2.5 days) Mon.-Fri., June 25-July 5 (2 weeks)

The Rev. Dr. Warren Crews will celebrate the Eucharist both weeks. He will preach one Sunday and Michael Booker will preach one of the Sundays.

Bylaws

The Executive Committee proposed some amendments to our bylaws which need to be updated. The changes will be posted on the bulletin board.

Committee reports Community Service Ministries: Steve Strathearn is setting up a meeting for those involved in the Community Service Ministries, as well as anyone interested in input, new ideas for ministry, etc. The meeting will take place after Adult Forum on Sunday, June 10th. New groups and ministries that develop need to be based under Bishops Committee member assignments for administration. The following placements will be shown under any amended lists:

Green Initiatives and School Tutoring will be assigned under Community Service Ministries. Youth Group will be assigned under Christian Formation. Wednesday Crafternoon Group and The Book Discussion Group will be added to Fellowship/ Hospitality Ministries.

General Convention Listening Sessions

The General Convention of the national Episcopal Church, which happens every 3 years, occurs this July in Indianapolis. The Diocese of Missouris deputies have scheduled 3 listening sessions in June. This enables the deputies to discuss the upcoming legislation and share their opinions and concerns. It also gives us a chance to ask questions. The sessions are: Sat., June 16 from 10-11:30 a.m. at St. Timothys Creve Coeur Sat., June 16 from 10:30-noon at Calvary Church Columbia Sat., June 23 from 10-11:30 a.m. at All Saints - Farmington

Next meeting June 17th. All are welcome to attend.

Chair Rack Donations Welcome

We have applied for a grant from the Church Endowment Assistance Fund to buy a chair rack. The rack, which has wheels, will hold the folding chairs for our worship space at the Lodge. This should make it easier to put the chairs away each Sunday. We must provide matching funds to receive the grant. The cost of the chair rack is $400. So we need donations totaling $200. If you would like to contribute, please put chair rack in the memo line of your check made payable to St. Francis Episcopal Church.

Ingredients 1 1/2 pounds ground lamb 2 cloves garlic, finely minced 1/2 pound feta cheese, crumbled 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice 1/3 cup fresh parsley leaves, coarsely chopped Kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper Easy Tzatziki recipe follows Directions In a medium bowl, combine the lamb, garlic, feta, allspice, parsley, salt and pepper, making sure not to overwork the mixture. Form the lamb mixture into 4 to 6 patties. Heat a grill pan over moderately-high heat and cook the lamb burgers until a nice crust forms, about 4 minutes. Turn the burgers over and let cook another 4 minutes. Let the burgers rest 10 minutes. Serve topped with Easy Tzatziki on a roll or bun. Easy Tzatziki: 1 cup Greek whole milk yogurt 1 English cucumber, seeded, finely grated and drained 2 cloves garlic, finely minced 1 teaspoon lemon zest plus 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill Kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper In a medium bowl, whisk together the yogurt, cucumber, garlic, lemon zest, lemon juice and dill. Season with salt and pepper. Chill. Golf Tournament
It was a great day as a good group of people participated in the Eureka Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament. Al Nessel, Dan Merideth, Judy Cody, and Bob Champlin were the golfers, encouraged by Della Hosutt, Debbie Pizzella, Carly Champlin and Gina Nessel, joined later in the day by Pastor Sally. Judy Cody, the only woman on the team, provided her own personal encouragement. As she moved around the course she could be heard saying, Hit the ball...carry the boys. Hit the ball...carry the boys!

St. Francis Garden Project

More enjoyment of the out-of-doors...this time by the St. Francis gardeners. The garden is located at the Wildwood YMCA on Highway 109. The Y assigns plots to various people and organizations...St. Francis has two plots. Part of the fruits of the harvest will go to the Eureka Food Pantry. The fantastic sign was a joint effort of John Schmidt who made the sign and Carly Champlin who painted it. Anyone interested in helping should contact Nancy Newcomer, John Schmidt or Kathleen McDonald.

Pet Blessing at WHOAA Country Fair

Wildwood Horse Owners and Acreage Association (WHOAA) hosted the 3rd annual Country Fair at the Greensfelder Park stable grounds on April 28. Visitors enjoyed music, food, equestrian sport demonstrations, a country market and much more. The event was covered by The Wildwood Current News Magazine in its May issue, which included a not so great picture of Pastor Sally blessing the animals. St. Francis members staffed a booth, handing out brochures and other material about St. Francis church. Sally blessed the animals, which as you can see from our pictures, included more than horses.

St. Francis on the Road

Saturday, May 19th dawned sunny, clear and not too hot. So we, a group of St. Francis friends, took off for Springfield and New Salem, Illinois. With the organizational skills of Sue Schmidt and Jack Lauless exceptional knowledge of all things Lincoln, we were in for a terrific day of touring, eating, shopping, learning, understanding and getting to know one another better. This outing was the first in a series planned to answer members requests to have more time to talk, to get to know one another in a fun setting, and to have a non-service time to invite friends to get to know our church family. As you can see from the pictures, it was a perfect day for all those things.

KIDS KORNER

The fifth Sunday in a month is the Childrens Sermon. On April 29, the children of St. Francis provided their own sermon on Jesus is the Shepherd.

Mom cleans up my room. My mom has a job and makes money and buys us stuff. I gave her a giant thumbprint of me. My mom helps me clean. My mom helps me learn to cook. My mom helps my dad cook. Because my dad doesnt actually know how. My mom cooks coffee for my sister.

Our Childrens Reflections on God and the Gospel

After explaining the stigmata (marks of nails in Jesus hands and feet) Dont forget about my splinters. I like your gold earrings. Theyre kinda shaped like corn. Ya know? Jesus is up in Heaven by the way. And Jesus teleported Thomas. What are things that are real but we cant see? Air, breathing, sound, clear streams, Jesus, social welfare programs. Jesus got a 3-day nap. A dirt nap! What do you like about your friends? Theyre nice. Theyre funny. What have you done nice for someone? I made my mom a Mothers Day present and it came out horrible. When my friend was sick I gave her one of my animals to cuddle. What is Mothers Day for? To celebrate our mothers and to make them feel better. To celebrate how great mothers are. Give them presents.

Unanswered Prayer
The preacher's five-year-old daughter noticed that her father always paused and bowed his head for a moment before starting his sermon. One day, she asked him why. "Well, Honey," he began, proud that his daughter was so observant of his messages. "I'm asking the Lord to help me preach a good sermon." "How come He doesn't answer it?" she asked.

A Prayer for Fathers

Most gracious Heavenly Father, we thank you for our earthly fathers, to whom you have entrusted the responsibility to provide loving protection of their families and guidance to their children. May our earthly fathers imitate the courage of Abraham, Jesse and Joseph, and all the holy fathers of the past in providing wise counsel to the children you have given to their care. Give them valiant faith in the face of confusion and conflict, hope in time of trouble and sorrow, and steadfast love for you, for their families, and for all your people throughout the world. Assist all fathers, that through your Grace, they may steadily grow in holiness and in knowledge and understanding of your Truth. May they generously impart this knowledge to those who rely on them. We ask your blessing on all those to whom you have entrusted the responsibilities of fatherhood. May your Holy Spirit constantly inspire them with justice, mercy, strength, and self-giving love. May they receive your Grace abundantly in this earthly life, and may they look forward to eternal joy in your presence in the life to come. We ask this through your Son, Jesus Christ. AMEN.

Prayer for St. Francis

We pray for the witness, renewal, and growth of our parish family. Living God, infuse us with your love. Enable us to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ to all whom we meet through our actions, our thoughts, our words. Make St. Francis' Church a place of invitation and welcome, a safe harbor and a beacon of the light of Christ. Amen.
