DIY - MKIV RPM wire tap (for tach install, AVCR, GPS, etc)

Ok, I know a lot of you are probably going to ask..."Our cars already have a tach, why the hell would you want to install another one?" I have two responses to that. Member Since 11-27-2004 5934 posts Charlotte NC 2000 Jetta VRT, 207,000 miles 407 whp 399 tq Firstly, if someone wants to do that to their car, it is their car and they can do whatever they want to it. Secondly, and probably *more* important, is that this DIY is a precursor to the LED Project #2 DIY (hint hint, coming soon). You'll need to grab the tach wire anyways, so might as well know how to do it. Needed Parts -Applicable splice (I prefer the green clamp-down ones, 18-22 gauge, available at radio shack) -Extra wire Needed Tools -10 mm socket -ratchet -small blade screwdriver -medium blade screwdriver -Torx-20 bit -Torque wrench: range 13-65 Nm If access to an ECU wire is needed: -13 mm socket Please be careful when performing this procedure. Read through the whole procedure before trying it. I can't be held responsible if I have made a mistake in the following steps. i. Initial conditions -The hood is open -The battery cover is removed Removing the cluster 1. Perform step 1.a of the Starter Motor Grind fix DIY. 2. Perform steps 6 through 12 of the MFA to FIS Cluster swap DIY. 3. Unwrap the black tape surrounding the blue connector for the cluster.

4. Locate the --GREEN WIRE WITH A BROWN STRIPE--. This will be pin 11 on the blue connector. This is the wire to splice into for your tachometer. Skip all of step 5 and all substeps of step 5.

Note: Some later model year cars (after April of 2002) do not have a green wire with a brown stripe. If you believe that this is the case, you must grab the wire at the ECU. To do this, perform the following: 5.a. Perform steps 1 through 5 of the Cabin filter replacement DIY. 5.b. Pop off the passenger's side windshield wiper cover with a small blade screwdriver.

5.c. Remove the the 13 mm nut holding the wiper in place.

5.d. Spray some penetrating lubricant in the spline of the wiper. Then rock the wiper back and forth to get it off the spline.

5.e. Raise the windshield cowl and jam a piece of wood in there to keep the cowl raised.

5.f. Slide the locking tab on the right side of the small connector to the right. It should come out about an inch, and then the plug will slide right out.

5.g Cut the zip-tie holding the cable bundle to the plug.

5.h Using a small blade screwdriver, pop the cover off the plug.

5.i Unlatch the locking clamp on the black hose, and draw the cable bundle as far out of the hose as you can.

5.j Unwrap the electrician's tape holding the cable bundle together.

5.k Locate and label the appropriate wire carring the tach signal. Here is a summary of wire locations. You MUST check the wiring diagram appropriate for your car...I may have made a mistake in this list. Tapping into the wrong wire may cause SEVERE damage to your car. AEG from Sep 98 - white wire, pin 63 on 80 pin connector AVH/AZH from Aug 00 - white wire, pin 82 on 121 pin connector AFP from Dec 98 - white wire, pin 82 on 121 pin connector BDF from Oct 01 - white wire, pin 82 on 121 pin connector AWD from Nov 99 - white wire, pin 82 on 121 pin connector AWW from Jun 00 - white wire, pin 82 on 121 pin connector AWP from Aug 00 - white wire, pin 82 on 121 pin connector ALH from Sep 98 - white wire, pin 67 on 80 pin connector ALH from May 99 - white wire, pin 110 on 121 pin connector BBW from Dec 02 - white wire, pin 82 on 121 pin connector BEW from May 03 - black wire, pin 43 on 60 pin connector BEV from May 03 - white wire, pin 82 on 121 pin connector BJS from Oct 03 - red wire, pin 106 on 121 pin connector

5.l Splice into the wire using whatever means you have at your disposal.

5.m Perform steps 5.j. through 5.a in reverse to re-install the connector into the ECU. 5.n Push out one of the rubber stops in the firewall , and route the wire behind the dash. I found it was easiest to tape the other end of the wire to a long screwdriver, stick it through the dash, and pull the wire through.

Note: At this point, you should have the tach wire behind the dash, whether it is from the ECU or from behind the cluster. The following steps return the cluster to inside the dash. 6. Install the cluster by performing steps 7-11 in reverse using the MFA to FIS Cluster swap DIY.

Does anyone know which one works better? I would like to add a shift light, do I need this part "MSD Ignition - Tach Signal GMR Pickup Part #8918" in order for the light to pick up the signal?" <steve />

Re: DIY - MKIV RPM wire tap (FaelinGL) I have a 2002 AWP and am installing a Stewart Warner shift light. I'm also using a MSD Ignition - Tach Signal GMR Pickup Part #8918 On one of the other post it says to connect to pin #82...white wire ....and my tach numbers are extremely off. What color wire is Pin #9? Is it the large white wire on the left in my pic below? Here is a pic. I'm connecting to the upper right solid white wire. Is this correct if not what color is the correct wire? .....Thank you

That white wire wasn't working for me but I discovered that the green/brown wire that is at pin 11 on the back of the cluster on earlier cars is still part of the engine harness in the AWP, it just dead ends at pin 9 of the orange connector under the cover in the plenum. I tapped this and it's all go.
