Because everything else is new, from the body panels outside to the coffee maker inside. To make a long story short, we can simply state that the new Volvo 9900 is a purpose-built tourist coach in every single detail. Generous interior dimensions, high-class seats, a sloping window line, large glass panels and sloping theatre oor are just some of the main features. Exclusivity Design Quality Comfort Safety Driver efficiency

THE RECREATION MACHINE VOLVO SOUND & VISION. With Volvo Sound & Vision, you can offer truly high-class entertainment on board. The genuine Hi-Fi sound and crystal-clear 17-inch TFT screens make our AV system among the very best the industry has to offer. The new Volvo 9900 is also available with a new sound selector, VSS-04, which considerably simplies handling of the control unit for the coachs infotainment system while at the same time offering extended functionality.

PLENTY OF SPACE FOR LUGGAGE. The luggage racks inside the passenger compartment are of the aircraft type, providing plenty of space for personal belongings. A refrigerator is included in the standard specication.

A skilful and responsible driver makes the biggest contribution to your passengers ability to travel safely. The second biggest factor is a coach that makes it easy for the driver to drive safely and that provides the best possible protection if the unexpected does happen. In other words, a coach like the Volvo 9900. It integrates everything weve learned about safety over the past 80 years together with a number of new safety innovations. All so you can offer your passengers a safe trip.

EBS AND ESP. The Volvo 9900 features Volvo disc brakes with EBS (Electronic Brake System), which offers excellent braking performance and rapid, gentle and controlled braking. In addition, there are other safety-enhancing and comfort-boosting solutions, such as Hill Start Aid, which stops the bus from rolling backwards when starting on a hill. Supplementing the wheel brakes are Volvos powerful engine brake VEB (Volvo Engine Brake) and the Volvo Compact Retarder. Automatic transmissions feature a built-in retarder. With the help of the Brake Blending function, the auxiliary brakes perform as large a part of the braking work as possible before the wheel brakes are activated. The Volvo 9900 is also equipped as standard with ESP (Electronic Stability Program). ESP signicantly reduces the risk of the coach rolling over or driving off the road both in normal road conditions and when the surface is slippery.

THROWING LIGHT ON THE SUBJECT. With rstclass ride and roadholding and excellent visibility all round, the Volvo 9900 offers good accidentpreventive safety. It has large rear-view mirrors with integrated close-quarter mirrors and cameras both at the doors and in the middle. Powerful headlights with Bi-Xenon lamps and large, high-set brake lamps further reduce the risk of accidents. INFORMATION TO PASSENGERS. The consequences of an accident can be reduced if the passengers know how to respond in an emergency situation. That is why every Volvo 9900 is delivered with safety information of the same sort as found in aircraft.

SAFETY-TESTED BODIES. If an accident should occur, our aim is to reduce the consequences as much as possible. The Volvo 9900 meets the EUs Bus and Coach Directive, which means the vehicle has to withstand a rollover without the roof collapsing. The interior is soft and free from protruding parts or sharp edges. The Volvo 9900 is also available with two-point or three-point seat belts for the driver and passengers, as well as booster cushions for children. VOLVO FIRST WITH FUPS IN COACHES. In a frontal collision between a coach and a passenger car, it is the driver and passengers in the car that run the greatest risk of injury. In order to improve their safety, the Volvo 9900 is equipped with FUPS (Front Underrun Protection System). It consists of a steel beam positioned behind the bumper that prevents the car from becoming wedged under the coach. In a collision, the impact energy is absorbed both by the cars own crumple zones and also by special impact elements in the coachs protection system, which give way and deform in a controlled manner. FUPS also offers good protection for components installed low down at the front of the coach. Volvo is the rst vehicle manufacturer to t this type of underrun protection to coaches.

SOFT INTERIOR. The passenger compartment has a soft and gentle design without any protruding parts or sharp components.

SIMPLE MAINTENANCE. The Volvo 9900 is easy to maintain. All the service points are grouped together logically. The smooth body panels mean it is easy to keep the coach clean. And in order to make wheel changes as convenient as possible, the coach can be equipped with a pull-out spare-wheel tray under the front hatch. The rear bumper is in three sections, so you need not replace the whole unit if part of the bumper gets damaged.

UNIQUE VOLVO PROTECTION FOR DRIVER AND GUIDE. The drivers seat in the Volvo 9900 comes with an integrated three-point seat belt. In order to improve safety for the driver and guide still further, Volvo has introduced Front Impact Protection (FIP) and Knee Impact Protection the rst manufacturer to do so. The former is a frontal collision protection system that absorbs and diverts impact forces in the event of a frontal collision. Knee Impact Protection reduces the risk of injury to the drivers knees and legs in a frontal collision. It consists of energy-absorbing panels positioned at knee height behind the instrument panel. In an impact where the drivers knees strike the instrument panel, the kinetic energy is absorbed by the impact panels which crumple gently and in a controlled manner to minimise injury. VISIBILITY ABOVE ALL ELSE. Daytime lighting is provided by LED lamps, which have a virtually limitless lifetime. Its a solution that Volvo was the rst manufacturer to offer. The main headlamps provide a powerful beam of light and offer excellent night-time visibility. All the more so if you choose Bi-Xenon lamps, which also have a far longer lifespan than conventional lamps. The new tail lights are large and positioned high up in the body so they can be seen clearly.

POWER AT YOUR COMMAND. With 420 or 460 hp, the Volvo 9900 has plenty of power in reserve. Its an effective highway cruiser, taking the miles in its stride and covering long distances economically. But its on the uphill gradients that the Volvo 9900 really shows its strength: the high-torque engine combined with our automatic Volvo I-Shift gearchanging system results in exceptional driveability, which in turn means that you always have access to all the power you need. The number of gearchanges is minimised and you can maintain a fast and steady average speed. Good weight distribution, a stiff frame with electronically controlled air suspension and independent front suspension result in particularly good stability and comfort. The Volvo 9900 also excels in congested city streets. Effective power steering and a small turning circle give the coach superb manoeuvrability.

STEP UP TO NEW HEIGHTS. As soon as you step in through the separate drivers door, youll note that the Volvo 9900 is something special. The interior is harmonious and wellmatched. The air-suspended, rotating and heated drivers seat offers excellent comfort and can naturally be adjusted to provide a relaxing, individually tailored position behind the wheel. The redesigned instrument panel is elegantly curved around the drivers seat. The instruments themselves are easy to overview with a clear, large display for driver information positioned centrally in the main instrument binnacle. All the controls are logically grouped, positioned within convenient reach. Large windows and mirrors with integrated close-quarter mirrors provide perfect visibility all round. The climate in the drivers compartment is controlled separately so you always have a pleasant working temperature. With a powerful defroster you can quickly and effectively remove mist and moisture from the inside of the windscreen. Power window lifts, electrically operated sun visors and a navigation system are also included in the standard specication, and there is plenty of space for personal belongings.

Power with a green conscience

When developing the new Volvo 9900, Volvos engineers were faced with a number of tough challenges. The coach had to have plenty of power, it had to be easy to drive, fuel-efcient and with good environmental properties. And it had to offer trouble-free and reliable operation, year in and year out. Thats when the technology does what it really should do create protability for you. Here are some of the components that do the job.

POWERFUL AND FUEL-EFFICIENT. The heart of the Volvo 9900 is the latest generation of Volvos fuelefcient six-cylinder diesel engines, the Volvo DH12E. It is an electronically controlled, horizontally installed 12-litre engine with four valves per cylinder, an overhead camshaft and separate unit injectors for each cylinder. The Volvo DH12E is available with two power outputs: 420 hp (2000 Nm) or 460 hp (2200 Nm). The engine offers superb response from rest and maximum torque is available within a wide rev range. This makes driving both simple and economical. The engines functions are regulated by an electronic control unit that communicates with the other components control units via the latest generation of our electronic architecture. In addition to optimum combustion, it creates unique scope for diagnostics and follow-up.

STAINLESS STEEL QUALITY. The frame, body, exhaust system and catalytic converter are all made of stainless steel, which provides excellent corrosion resistance and a long service life. And in order to ensure smooth, attractive and easy to clean body sides, we have used a new method of attaching the bodys external panels.

ENVIRONMENTALLY OPTIMISED. The Volvo 9900 is certied for Euro 4. The 420 hp variant is also available in an incentive version for Euro 5, which will come into force within the EU in 2009. By after-treating the exhaust gases with SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) the nitrogen oxides are converted into harmless nitrogen gas and water vapour. The technology is simple and reliable, and has the huge advantage of being able to meet forthcoming emission requirements with particularly good fuel economy.

VOLVO I-SHIFT. The Volvo 9900 is equipped with our popular automatic gearchanging system, Volvo I-Shift, which has now undergone further development. Volvo I-Shift combines the robustness and dependability of a manual gearbox with the comfort and convenience of automatic transmission. The latest generation is lighter, more compact and quieter than before. The software has been optimised for tourist operations.

The system gives you information about where your vehicles are, their fuel consumption, planned routes, driver times, service intervals and much more besides. All the information is presented in the form of easy to understand reports that offer you better control over many of the parameters that affect your economy. The most recent generation of Dynaeet is also available with geofencing, a function that alerts the ofce if the bus deviates from the planned route. Another new feature is that the driver can have access to the Internet in the bus by connecting a laptop or palmtop computer to Dynaeet. The on-board software is updated remotely via GPRS. Dynaeet can be integrated with a variety of administration systems.

REARVIEW CAMERA. A new rearview camera with integrated heating to counter ice and mist build-up and an anti-dazzle function to offer good visibility even in strong sunlight. The camera is activated automatically when reversing. The image is shown on a colour screen in the instrument panel.

VEHICLE INFORMATION. Important information is shown on a colour screen in the instrument panel. The driver receives clear information about door function, fault codes, interior and exterior temperature, climate control and much more.

NAVIGATION SYSTEM. The latest-generation navigation system is integrated into the same screen that is used for the backup camera and vehicle information. The system features detailed maps all over Europe.
