This week I hardly know where to begin so much has been going on in the parish these past two weeks. On Sunday 20 May we had Welcome Sunday and a Ministry Fair which was absolutely superb. New parishioners were welcomed and blessed at Masses; then all members of the parish were invited to sign up for a ministry outside the Serra Center afterwards. Our main ministries were represented at colorfully decorated tables and what a display there was! The whole event was organized by the indomitable Marta Werner and her team. Thank you Marta from all of us for your passion, expertise and unstoppable excitement for the ministry in our parish! Like St. Francis, you and your fellows have heard the Lord say to us, Go and rebuild my Church and you have rolled up your sleeves. Well done and congratulations! On foot of Welcome Sunday it is important to remember that the work of contacting all who signed up, training and educating them, has just begun. Follow up will be crucial if we are to grow our ministries and rebuild our Church. Blessed Junipero Serra used to say, Siempre adelante! or Always forward! Not a bad motto for us as we move ahead with new members of our faith community and embrace fresh challenges. The Retreat for Confirmation took place at the Mission last Friday and Saturday and was a resounding success. I had the privilege of hearing confessions and presiding at a candle light evening Mass with our candidates what a joy! I want to thank my brothers from the Mission for joining me and Fr. Luis in celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation with over 90 youth, including our Core Team, Retreat Team and adult mentors. Congratulations to Margi Arguello and her helpers for a splendid and prayerful two days and to all the young men and women who came for this final preparation for Confirmation. It was good to see some parents and sponsors show up for lunch on Saturday your support for and dedication to the faith development of your young people is absolutely crucial. If you are not on board, our efforts are almost in vain; its as simple as that. The current financial situation being what it is, we are indebted to the Parish Book Store and to M.O.P. (Maintain Our Parish) for donations towards the Confirmation Retreat this year. Thank you once again!

Sunday 3 June at 5:00 p.m. This will be the Bishop Broms last official visit to the parish as Bishop of the San Diego Diocese and we hope it will be a memorable one. The Parish Chapel has gotten a bit of a facelift with new cushions and backs for the pews. The wooden statues of the Blessed Mother and St. Joseph have been moved into the sanctuary area and we await new religious images for the shrines to the left and right. One side will have a family theme with three icons: The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph; Jesus with the Children, and The Guardian Angel watching over a small boy and girl. The family is the nucleus of the Church and we hope that our Family Shrine will draw us to prayer for and reflection on the blessing of family life. The other side will remind us of the Franciscan character of our parish. We will have three icons there also. These will depict St. Francis of Assisi, St. Clare of Assisi and St. Anthony of Padua. All six icons are $125 each (at cost through the Mission Gift Shop) and parishioners are welcome to donate and/or sponsor one. Donors names will be written on the back of the icons in prayerful remembrance. And finally, by the time your read this bulletin I would have left for Ireland on Thurs. May 31 to give a retreat for the Franciscan Friars of my home Province. It coincides with the Eucharistic Congress which is being held in Dublin, Ireland in June. Fr. David kindly gave permission and I will be away for almost 14 days, 9 of which will be given over to the retreat. The retreat is being held in Killarney, amid the mountains and lakes of the Kingdom of Kerry in the deep south of Ireland. I entered the Order at the Franciscan Friary in Killarney in 1973, so Im going back to where it all began for me as a Franciscan almost 40 years ago. THE CATECHETICAL MINUTE ROMAN MISSAL QUESTIONS

We are approaching the 50th anniversary of the convening of the second Vatican Council. We can use this anniversary to step back to review the many changes that have taken place in the liturgy. The liturgy is celebrated in the language of the people, the vernacular, around the world. The rituals of the church have been revised to bring them more completely into the life of the church. The councils image of full, conscious and active participation has been realized in many places and fruitful ways. Todays Catholics understand the church is a work in progress and that the reforms of the Council have varied interpretations and directions as its liturgical renewal unfolds. The introduction of the New Translation of the Roman Missal in Advent is one of those events. It has been a significant moment for English-speaking Catholics around the world. The goal of our Parishs catechesis has been to introduce and teach about the translation for what it is. It is part of a long tradition of liturgical development and evaluation by church leadership to more fully celebrate and evangelize through the divine mystery, the Mass Each translation is an experiment as well as compromise, both a pastoral gift and pastoral challenge. The very act of translation and the accompanying catechetical ministry makes it a most demanding ministry in service of the churchs liturgy commentary on the Order of the Mass. For this reason the Q & A on the Roman Missal will continue as an opportunity for learning about the liturgy of our church in the resuming of the questions and answers on the Roman Missal. We need to understand that the Missal is a point of formation in the liturgical work of the church, not a conclusion to the reform and renewal of the Vatican Councils work. No se cmo empezar esta semana con tantas cosas ocurriendo en la parroquia durante estas dos semanas pasadas. El domingo 20 de mayo tuvimos el Domingo de Bienvenida y una Feria de Ministerios que fueron fabulosos. Le dimos la bienvenida y la bendicin a los feligreses nuevos en las Misas; luego se invitaron a todos los miembros parroquiales, al final de las Misas, a inscribirse para participar en diferentes ministerios. Nuestros ministerios principales fueron representados en mesas decoradas en colores variados y qu presentacin ms hermosa era sto! El evento total fue organizado por la fuerza integra de Marta Werner y su equipo. Gracias, Marta, de todos nosotros por toda tu pasin, tu entusiasmo experto y continuo por el ministerio en nuestra parroquia! Al igual que a San Francisco, tu y tus compaeros han escuchado al Seor decirnos, Ve y reconstruye mi Iglesia, y ustedes se han enrollado las mangas. Bien hecho y felicitaciones! Continuando con el Domingo de Bienvenida, es importante recordar que el trabajo de comunicarse con todos los que se inscribieron, entrenarlos y educarlos, es solo el principio. El continuarlo ser crucial si vamos a hacer crecer nuestros ministerios y a reconstruir nuestra Iglesia. El Santo Junpero Serra acostumbraba decir, Siempre Adelante. - No es un mal lema para nosotros a medida que avanzamos con los miembros nuevos de nuestra comunidad de fe y aceptar nuevos desafos. El Retiro de Confirmacin tomo lugar en la Misin el viernes y el sbado pasado y fue un xito resonante. Yo tuve el privilegio de escuchar confesiones y celebrar la Misa a luz de vela con los candidatos - qu gran gozo! Yo deseo agradecerle a mis hermanos de la Misin por unirse a mi y a Padre Luis para celebrar el Sacramento de Reconciliacin con ms de 90 jvenes, incluyendo nuestro Equipo Medular, Equipo de Retiros y mentores adultos. Felicitaciones a Margie Arguello y a sus ayudantes por dos das esplndidos y de oracin, provisto a todos los jvenes que llegaron a esta preparacin final para Confirmacin. Fue muy agradable ver a algunos padres y patrocinadores que vinieron al almuerzo del sbadosu apoyo y su dedicacin al desarrollo de la fe de nuestros jvenes es absolutamente crucial. Si ustedes no estn disponibles, nuestros esfuerzos casi son en vano; es tan simple como eso. La situacin financiera actual, siendo lo que es, nos mantiene en deuda hacia la Librera Parroquial y hacia MOP (Manteniendo Nuestra Parroquia) por donaciones hacia el Retiro de Confirmacin este ao. Gracias nuevamente! El Obispo Robert Brom conferir el Sacramento de Confirmacin a 70 jvenes de la Parroquia el domingo, 3 de junio a las 5:00 p.m. Esta ser la ltima visita del obispo como Obispo de la Dicesis de San Diego y esperamos que sta sea una memorable.

La Capilla Parroquial ha logrado actualizarse un poco con cojines nuevos en los bancos. Las estatuas de madera de Santa Mara y de San Jos se han movido al rea del santuario y estamos esperando imgenes religiosas nuevas para los santuarios a la derecha y a la izquierda. A un lado habr un tema familiar con tres iconos: La Sagrada Familia de Jess, Mara y Jos; Jess con los nios y El Angel Guardan protegiendo a un nio pequeo y a una nia. La Familia es el ncleo de la Iglesia y nosotros esperamos que nuestro Santuario Familiar nos atraiga a orar y a reflexionar por la vida familiar y por sus bendiciones. El otro lado nos recordar el carcter Franciscano de nuestra Parroquia. Tendremos tus iconos tambin en ese lado. Ellos presentarn a San Francisco de Ass, a Santa Clara de Ass y a San Antonio de Padua. Los seis iconos cuestan $125 cada uno (al costo a travs de la tienda de reliquias de la Misin) y los feligreses estn invitados a hacer donaciones y/o patrocinar uno de ellos. Los nombres de los donantes sern escritos en la parte posterior de los iconos. Para detalles pueden comunicarse con Malia Campbell en el departamento de contabilidad parroquial (760-547-0711) o conmigo a travs de la Oficina Parroquial. Finalmente, yo viaje a Irlanda el jueves 31 de mayo para dar un Retiro a los Frailes Franciscanos en mi Provincia. El mismo coincide con el Congreso Eucarstico que se celebrar en Dublin, Irlanda en junio. Padre David lo permiti generosamente y yo estar fuera por casi 14 das, 9 de los cuales sern dedicados al retiro. El retiro se celebrar en Killarney, entre las montaas y los lagos del Reino de Kerry en el sur profundo de Irlanda. Yo entr a la Orden de los Frailes en Killarney en el ao 1973, por lo que hoy voy de nuevo a donde todo esto comenz en mi vida para mi como Franciscano hace casi 45 aos. Por favor recuerden hacer una plegaria por el xito del retiro. Dios les bendiga y cudense unos a otros.

Preguntas Sobre El Misal Romano

Nos estamos acercando al aniversario nmero 50 de convocarse el Concilio Vaticano Segundo. Podemos utilizar este aniversario para ir hacia atrs y revisar los cambios numerosos que han tomado lugar en la liturgia. La liturgia es celebrada en el lenguaje del pueblo, el lenguaje vernacular, alrededor del mundo. Los rituales de la Iglesia se han revisado para traerlos completamente en la vida de la Iglesia. La imagen del Concilio de participacin activa, consciente y plena se ha realizado en muchos lugares y en formas fructferas. Hoy en da los Catlicos comprenden que la Iglesia es un trabajo en progreso y que las Reformas del Concilio tienen interpretaciones y direcciones variadas de acuerdo a como se expone y se desarrolla su renovacin litrgica. La introduccin de la Traduccin Nueva del Misal Romano en Adviento es uno de estos eventos. Esto ha sido un momento significativo para los Catlicos de habla inglesa alrededor del mundo. La meta de nuestra catequesis parroquial ha sido la introduccin y la enseanza sobre la traduccin y sobre lo que sta es. Esto es parte de una larga tradicin de desarrollo y evolucin litrgica del liderato de la Iglesia para celebrar y evangelizar a travs del Misterio Divino. La Misa. Cada traduccin es un experimento a la vez que un compromiso, siendo ambos, un regalo pastoral y un reto pastoral. El acto de traduccin en s y el ministerio catequtico que lo acompaa lo hace ser el ministerio que Requiere Ms Servicio de la liturgia de la Iglesia comentario sobre el orden de la Misa. Por esta razn las Preguntas y las Respuestas sobre el Misal Romano continuarn como una oportunidad para aprendizaje sobre la Liturgia de nuestra Iglesia resumiendo las preguntas y respuestas sobre el Misal Romano. Debemos entender que el Misal es un Punto de Formacin en el Trabajo Litrgico de la Iglesia, no una conclusin para la Reforma y Renovacin de la Labor del Concilio Vaticano.
