Functions of the remote radio head

Overview

The remote radio head (RRH) communicates digital traffic data and control signals
over the optical fiber interface. The RRH also converts the traffic information to and
from a suitable RF format for transmission between the RRH and the mobile station
(MS) or user equipment (UE). Control signals are interpreted and applied to the
internal circuitry of the RRH. A combination of digitized voice, data and control
signals is communicated over the optical fiber interface.
Control functions supported by the optical fiber interface include:

Control of Antenna Line Devices (ALD) using AISG commands

RF output power measurement

Diversity receive path imbalance

Internal temperature measurement

Antenna VSWR measurement

The ability to enable or disable the RRH

Network firmware upgrades are performed over the optical fiber interface when
necessary.
The RRH supports an optical fiber range of 15 km between the remote RRH and the
BBU.
The RRH obtains the system timing accuracy by recovering timing reference through
CPRI (fiber) link from the BBU system clock.
The RRH supports primary and secondary protection on all non-fiber external
interfaces.

Functions of the components of the RRH

The following topics describe the functions of the components of the RRH:
Controller

The controller contains the main microprocessor, the digital clock circuitry and the
integrated circuits of the auxiliary digital interface. It houses the digital signal
processing engine for both transmission and reception. The digital signals are
forwarded to, and received from, the radio.
A dual bidirectional high speed serial interface at 614.4 Mbps is converted to an
optical interface that connects to dual duplex optical fiber connector (Fiber 0/1).
The controller also serves the following interfaces:
User alarms

Maintenance (Ethernet)
Antenna Line Device (ALD)

Radio

The radio provides the complete receiver and transmitter functionality of the RRH.

Overview of the Remote radio head

General

The Remote radio head (RRH) consists of integrated assemblies that realize the RF
transmission and reception portions of a UMTS air interface mobile network. The RRH
accepts RF inputs from user equipment (UE) and converts them to a digital format
suitable for transmission to the serving base station. The RRH is a single hardware
package that incorporates transmit path and receive path components into a single field
replaceable unit. The unit interfaces to the baseband unit (BBU) via a fiber interface
and is supplied power from either an AC or DC source, depending on the deployment.
The RRH is packaged in a weather proof housing with provision for connectors and
mounting hardware. The RRH can be mounted on a tower, pole or wall.
The RRH supports up to 15 km optical fiber range between RRH and the Baseband
Unit.

DxTMA functional overview

The UMTS Diplexer Tower Mounted Amplifier (DxTMA) is used in a UMTS Radio
System to establish an improved system noise figure referenced at the TTLNA ANT
connector and to maintain improved noise figure through the system.
The DxTMA is DC powered via the RF coaxial antenna cable installed between the
DxTMA and the Node B.
The alarm status of the Low Noise Amplifier (LNA) is also transmitted via the RF
coaxial antenna cable.
The DxTMA is proteced against overload and intermodulation distortion generation by
the transmit carriers.
In case of failure the LNA is bypassed.
A C based circuitry supervises the LNA and generates an alarm in case of failure.

Function

The transmit and receive signals are separated by appropriate filters. The receive signal
is amplified by a Low Noise Amplifier (LNA) and re-coupled to the common signal
path. The LNA and the C circuitry are supplied with DC voltage over the feeder cable
from the Node B; this voltage is coupled out by a bias circuitry.
Function

Bias circuitry

The DC component of the signal on the feeder cable

coming from the Node B is separated from the RF
component in the bias circuitry. The DC voltage for
supplying the amplifier and the controller circuitry is
routed directly to the LNA and C.
Additionally the alarms generated by the C are coupled
to the feeder cable and routed to the Node B in the bias
circuitry.

Part

Filters

Filters separate and re-couple the transmit and receive

signals from/onto one line. The filters limit the signals to
the transmit or receive bandwidth. Noise and
intermodulation products are suppressed in the transmit
path. In the receive path, sidebands, and especially the
transmit signal, are suppressed. This ensures sufficient
isolation between the transmit and receive path.

LNA

The Low Noise Amplifier (LNA) amplifies the receive

signal.

Switches

Driven by the C circuitry each LNA is bypassed in case

of failure.

VSWR detector

The Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR) detector

generates an alarm in case of a faulty or missing antenna
connection reflecting power back into the TTLNA.

The micro controller based circuitry (C) supervises the

LNA and the VSWR detector. In case of an LNA failure
it bypasses the LNA and generates an according alarm. It
also generates an alarm triggered by the VSWR detector.
