especiallymarkedforthoseparticipantswhocannotparticipatewithus
in the main Can Collection 0rive in Vay as well as served as an extra
pushtoachieveourtargetof2J,000kgsofAluminumCans!Thisyear,
eachofthe12collectionpointsacrosstheUAEoutdidthemselvesasa
totalcollectionof7610kgswasrecorded.EECalsohasanewmember

As EEC is launching its electronic recycling campaign this year, it was
butthereforeappropriatetohaveaCommunityLecturebasedonthis
theme.Vr.AhmadShadid,annformationandCommunicationTechnol
ogy professional who is an active advocate of responsible recycling

ThelecturebeganwithawarmwelcomebyVr.
SaeedAlAbbar,EECVember,onbehalfofEEC
Chairperson, Vrs. Habiba Al Varashi, to the
audience,whichincludedrepresentativesfrom
thecorporate,government,academicsectors,
individuals and families from across the UAE.
Highlights of upcoming EEC campaigns
particularly the Can Collection 0ay were
presented while calling everyone to come
forward to be actively involved in the
campaigns.
The Wetex 2011 Exhibition and Conference
being a beautiful example of publicprivate
partnership to uphold the framework of
cooperation among various organizations and
sectors in the community was mentioned and
corporate bodies were called upon to
participateandgainfromit.
Vr. Shadid began his Lecture tackling the
variousissuesrelatedtoewasterecycling.The
global phenomena of increasing volume of
ewastes, its associated environmental,
economic and social issues were discussed
along with the various initiatives to address
such issues. Civen the trend and the scale of
theissue,thesolutionsrequiretheintegration
of government, manufacturer, and consumer
effortstocurbtheenvironmentalimplications
oftheproblem.0uringtheinteractivesession,
the audience raised questions about the
ewastemanagementprogramsbeinginitiated
intheUAE.
Finally,Vr.AlAbbarprovidedavoteofthanks
toVr.Shadid,AbelaandCo.forprovidingthe
snacks, Crystal Callery for the crystal and
EmaratAtrium for the venue and thanked all
theattendeesoftheday.
0nthe24thofFebruary2011,morethan280participantsfromdifferent
strataofUAEsocietygatheredatdesignatedlocationsacrossthecountry
for the collection ofAluminum Cans. EECs Can Collection 0ay was an
astounding success as a total of 8,000 kgs of Aluminum Cans were
collected,showingariseofmorethan40fromthepreviousyear.From
8.J0 am1:J0 pm, enthusiastic participants thronged the 12 collection
pointsacrosstheUAE.
Vrs. Habiba Al Varashi, Chairperson, EEC, said, t gives me great
pleasuretoseethegrowingparticipationofpeoplefromvariouswalksof
lifebusinessmen,housewives,students,corporatebodiesallcoming
togetherforasinglecause.Theamountcollectedonthisoccasionhas
surpassedourpreviouscollections,andcalluponeachandeveryoneof
youtohelpusachieveourtargetof2J,000kgsthisyear.
The event began with the participants handing over their bags lled with
cans to EEC volunteers, who in turn, weighed and recorded them.
ParticipantswereofferedjuiceandwatersponsoredbyNestleWaterand
Al Sa. The atmosphere at each of the collection points was lled with
fun, which also revealed the environmental consciousness of the
participantsandvolunteers.Afriendlycompetitionwasalsobrewingas
winners of the Campaign would be awarded during the Annual Prize
CivingCeremonyinJune.
The CC0 has also marked the beginning of the EEC Photography
CompetitionorganizedinassociationwithCanonViddleEast,whichwill
beopenuntil7thVay.

EnvironmentandCocaColaViddleEast.TheCampaignissupportedby
government institutions such as 0ubai Vunicipality, Ajman Free Trade

As part of the Can Collection Campaign, EEC has launched its rst ever
AluminumPecycling7ideo!Thisvideoshowsthevariousstepsinvolvedin
recyclingAluminum,advantagesofrecyclingthismetalandhazardsof
sending it to the landll. EEC is of the view that this video can help
students and adults alike learn more aboutAluminum and realize the
importanceofrecyclingit!

n line with the thrust to promote awareness on the importance of proper treatment of ewaste in the UAE particularly the mobile devices and
accessories,EECincollaborationwithNokiaViddleEastandAfricaonceagainjoinedhandsinamobilerecyclingcampaign.NowonitsJrdphaseof
projectimplementation,thecampaignreachesnewheightsastheprogramextendsitsreachtoagreaternumberoftargetparticipantsfromthe
varioussectorsoftheUAEcommunity.The8orrowA8inschemeshallbeoneagainrolledoutamongEECscorporatememberswhererecyclingbins
shallbeplacedintheparticipatingorganizationspremisesforaweektoprovidefacilityfortheemployeestotakepartinthecampaign.
Atotalof10dialoguesessionswith10selectedschoolsarealsoinpipelinefor2011.Thedialogueshallhighlightthediscussionsonenvironmental
signicance of mobile recycling, the process ow of recycling and all other related and timely topics. With EEC spearheading the project
implementationandNokiaprovidingthetechnicalexpertiseontheissuesrelatingtorecycling,thesuccessofthedialogueinengagingtheacademic
institutionstotakeactivepartinthemobilerecyclingcampaignisanticipated.
Anotherbeautifuladditiontothecampaignistheschemetotranslatemobilephoneintotrees.tisaprojectwherebyallparticipatingorganizations
andindividualsshallhavethechancetojoinEECinthe11/11/11celebrationon11November2011throughplantingoftreesundertheirrespective
names.Allparticipatingorganizationsthatshallbeabletocollectanddepositaminimumof100mobilephonesforrecyclinguntil01September2011
shall be qualied to join the tree planting event. For individual participants, the qualifying amount of collection is 25 mobile phones.
n collaboration with the 0ubai Police, Ceneral 0epartment of Correctional
nstitutions,theEmiratesEnvironmentalCroup(EEC)initiatedapilotprogram
to collect dry cell batteries at the Central Prison Facility in the months of
Septemberto0ecember2010.Throughthebatterycollectioncampaigninthe
prison facility, a total of 172 kgs or 5676 pieces of dry cell batteries were
properly disposed in one of the 0ubai municipalitys treatment facilities in
2010.
Withthesuccessoftheinitiative,EECandthe0ubaiPoliceonceagainjoint
forcesintheadvocacytoincreaseawarenessonthehazardsofusedbatteries
onhealthandenvironmentandtheimportanceofproperwastedisposal.The
campaignisalsoaneffectiveplatformbywhichthewholeprisoncommunity
could positively contribute to promote a greener and more sustainable
environment.
n2011,theprojecthastakenoffinthemonthofFebruarywiththecollection
of 55kgs of batteries from the prison facility. Looking ahead, it is hoped to
replicatetheprojectinother0ubaiPolicefacilitieslaterwithintheyear.

For the rst time, EEC travelled to ndia to attend the Healthy Cities conference
inPuneorganizedbythe0r.8NCollegeofArchitecture(8NCA).Althoughthere
arevariousperspectivesonunderstandingaCityfrombeinganeconomicengine
to a place of cultural institutions, from an organized society to a system of
complexinfrastructure,thisconferencefocusedprimarilyonthecomponentsof
urbanlivingenvironments,andthevariousfactorsresponsibleforitsmaking.
EEC Chairperson, stopped over at Vumbai for a meeting with the Vinister of
Environment,whomshepresentedwithEECpublicationsandalsoexplainedin
briefEECsscopeofwork.
Vrs. Al Varashi gave a presentation on Sustainable Waste Vanagement
SystemsunderthebroadthemeofPesourceVanagementonthesecondday
oftheConference.Thispresentationfocusedon0ubaiasacasestudy,depicting
its steady growth through images from the 90s and recent times. She also
emphasized on the role of the society, government, civil society and the
corporateworldtodevelopasustainablenation.
Laterintheday,shealsochairedapanelsessionwherespeakersmadestrongpresentationsonWaterConservationandWaterHarvesting.
Vrs.Al Varashi was also invited to draw up a concluding vision paper, along with 24 professionals, which was to be presented to the Vunicipal
CommissionerofPuneattheclosingceremonyoftheConference.ThispaperencompassedthevisionofHealthyCitiesfromtheperspectivesofall25
members,includingdentity,Well8eing,Equity,Participation,Access,Plurality,7itality,Progression,SafetySecurityandProductivity.

graduatesfortheiracademicachievements.Theevent,attheEmiratesPalaceHotelAuditorium,washeldunderthepatronageofH.H.Lt.Ceneral
SheikhSaif8inZayedAlNahyan,UAEVinisterofnteriorand0eputyPrimeVinisterandinthepresenceofH.H.SheikhKhaled8inZayedAlNahyan,
7iceChairmanofEtihadAirways8oard.Vrs.HabibaAlVarashiurgedthestudentstobesuccessfulprofessionalsintheirlifebutwantedthemtobe
evengreaterhumanbeings.QuotingtheHolyQuranshesaid,SeeyenothowAllahhathmadeserviceableuntoyouwhatsoeverisintheskiesand
whatsoeverisintheearthandhathloadedyouwithHisfavoursbothwithoutandwithin:[Luqman:20],toliveandinhabititHeitisWhoproduced

Thus,shetoldthestudentsthateachofushadaresponsiblytotakecareofthemandimproveonwhatHehasgivenusbeforewehanditoverto
generations to come. The University also presented an award to Vrs. Al Varashi for her exemplary work in the eld of sustainability and
environmentalismintheUAE.
Dar Al Marefa School Visits Glass Recycling Factory
Studentsofthe0arAlVarefaSchoolreceivedauniqueopportunitytovisittheJebelAliContainerand
ClassFactoryaspartoftheirUnitofnquiryprogram.Thesestudentsaretaughtthatmaterialsare
usedaccordingtotheirpropertiesandthus,theyweretakenonthistriptoseehowglassbottlesare
made. The students were taken inside and outside the factory as they watched how the factory
produces2,000,000glassbottlesperday!Theyalsosawhowrecycledglassisusedandwereableto
askquestionstothestaff.0verall,itwasaveryenjoyableandinformativetripforthesestudentsof
the0arAlVarefaSchool.

26year old Colam has been with the EEC Team for three years and is still enthusiastic to pursue his
vocationofservinghiscolleagueswhiledoinghissharetoprotectandpreservetheenvironment.was

abletospeakawordofEnglish.TheChairpersonwaspatienttoteachmetocommunicateandencour
agedmetolearntechnicalskillslikerepairingcomputerprinters.amenjoyingthelearningexperience
hereinEECamdevelopingalotofskillsandamalsomeetingalotofpeople,mostofthemarePoyals
and0ignitaries,andtheChairpersonisalwaysverykindtointroducemetothemaspartofherTeam.

joinEECsVillionTreeCampaign,whichfallsundertheaegisofUNEPs
8illion Tree Campaign, by planting the indigeneous Chaf tree in their
schoolcampus.Thetreewasplantedby0r.A.P.J.AbdulKalam,former
Presidentofndia.Thetreewasplantedasitisthenationaltreeofthe
UAEandasymbolofArabheritage.

MOU for Environmental Preservation
TheEnvironmentAgencyAbu0habiand0ubaiVunicipalityhavesignedaVemorandumofUnderstanding(V0U)fortheexchangeofenvironmental
informationanddatatostrengthentheirjointeffortsinpreservingtheenvironmentandtocombatallformsofpollutioninthecountryforsustainable
development. The signing of this V0U will also help achieve the common goals of both organizations through cooperation in the eld of monitoring
andimprovingthequalityofambientairinordertotakenecessaryprecautionsforthereductionofthenegativeeffectsofairpollutiononhuman
healthandtheenvironment.
The two sides have agreed to activate the electronic link between the network of air quality monitoring inAbu 0habi and that in 0ubai and to
exchangeinformationtoimprovethequalityofairinboththeEmirates.

Head of PublicAffairs E Vedia Pelations and UN Clobal Compact Spokesperson, will be providing a closer look at CSP, shared values,

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh 0r. Sultan bin Vohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council
VemberandPulerofSharjah,EPAAorganizedthe12thnternationalWorkshopforthemaintenanceof
biodiversity in the environments of the Arabian Peninsula in the 0esert ParkSharjah, with the
participationofabout70regionalandinternationalexpertsandscholars.
Thisworkshopcomesaspartofastrategybasedontheprincipleofresponsibilityandcommitmentto
strengthening the capacity of joint action in the continued production of scientic programs that
contributetotheindustry'sstrategyforsoundbiodiversityconservationinthecountriesoftheArabian
Peninsula.
This twelfth session of the workshop is a continuation of the scientic efforts that have taken place in
previous sessions, building on the scientic methodologyof the workshop in the followup procedures
forimplementingtheactionplansthathavebeencarriedout,throughthediscussionofArabPedList
of Predators and the status of natural reserves in the Arabian Peninsula. The scientic assessment
whichhasbeenpreparedinthe2009workshopshowedthatabout69ofthenaturalreservesinthe
regiondonthaveamanagementplan.

Underthethemeof(Living0esert),EPAAandAwarenessCommitteeincooperationwiththeArabCulturalCluborganizedacelebrationontheoccasion
oftheNationalEnvironment0ayontheeveningofFebruaryJ.
The event included the opening of an environmental exhibition, which showed paintings from the terrestrial environment and awarenessraising
postersaswellasplantsamplesfromtheUAE.Alsoorganizedduringtheceremonywerecompetitionsaroundenvironmentaleducationprogramsfree
forchildrenandfacepaintinginspiredbytheterrestrialenvironmentinadditiontothetechnicalworkshopontheterrestrialenvironmentandplay
dollsforchildren(Living0esert).
0nthesidelines,apaneldiscussiononthemaintenanceofenvironmentandwildernessareasinSharjahandtheadministrativedecisionNo.1forthe
year2008issuedbyH.H.Sheikh0r.SultanbinVohammedAlQasimi,SupremeCouncilVemberandPulerofSharjah,thatprescribespreservationofthe
desertenvironmentandsustainablemaintenance.EPAAtaketheannualcelebrationofnationalenvironmentdayasthebasisforplanningactivitiesin
associationwiththeconcernedauthoritiesintheemirateofSharjah.Choosingthedesertenvironmentasthethemeforthisyearcelebrationfallsin
linewithgovernmentofSharjahStrategytowardsprotectingthewildlifeoftheemirate.
WETEX exhibition and Conference 2011
0EWA,theElectricityandWaterAuthorityof0ubai,willbeorganizingthe1JthcycleoftheWetex2011exhibition,
whichisthepremierforumforwater,energyandenvironment,fromthe8thto10thofVarch.0EWAhasannounced
its intention to sign a number of contracts for major projects in different elds in the exhibition, which has seen
positivegrowthinthiscycleanincreaseof47inareaandJ0inthenumberofexhibitorsand9inthenumber
ofparticipatingcountries.
The exhibition, supported by partners such as the Emirates Environmental Croup, will attract national, regional and international companies
belongingto25countriesfromdifferentcontinents.Anumberofministries,departmentsandassociationsofthepublicsectorwillalsobeseen

Indigenous Peoples, Marginalized Populations and
Climate Change
0n the 1921 July 2011, an international workshop on ndigenous
Peoples, Varginalized Populations and Climate Change: 7ulnerability,
AdaptationandTraditionalKnowledgewillbeconvenedinVexicoCity,
Vexico.The conference is organized by the United Nations University
(UNU),ntergovernmentalPanelonClimateChange(PCC),Secretariat
of the Convention on 8iological 0iversity (SC80), United Nations
0evelopment Programme (UN0P), in collaboration with the Vexican
National nstitute of Ecology (NE). The aim of the workshop is to
identify, compile and analyze relevant indigenous and local
observations, knowledge and practices related to climate change
impacts, adaptation and mitigation. 0ne of the key objectives of the
conference is to make sure that information (local, indigenous and
scientic) focusing on marginalized regions are made available to the
authorsofthePCC5thAssessmentPeport.

CC/CVEF and other international environmental forums. EEC
attendedthisimportantmeetingin2010,andhasbeenactively
providingUNEPwithfeedbackandcommentstodocumentsand
decisionsthroughouttheyear,becauseoftheaccreditedstatus
EECholds.EECwillbekeepingaclosewatchontheoutcomes
anddecisionsmadeatthisannualevent.

andContinuousEducationintheJordanian8arAssociationorganizedatrainingworkshoponenvironmentallawsintheJordaniancapitalofAmman.
Thesessioncomesasaresponsetotheurgentneedtoactivateandapplythelawsandenvironmentallegislation,whichistheweaknessofthemost
importantchallengesthatcontributetothedepletionofnaturalresourcesanddegradationofecosystems,whichhavebeenappliedandactivated
limitofthisdegradationanddepletionofcapitalnatural.
0uring the workshop, a review of the laws and environmental legislation were identied as weaknesses and ways to make the basis of this evaluation
programwasaspecialregardasoneofthecomponentsoftheprojectforactivatingthelawsandregulationsandputitamongtheprioritiesofthe
Jordanianjudiciary.nthisregard,anintegratedtrainingprogramwillbeorganizedthatraisestheoreticalissuesandpracticalcooperationwiththe
