ETHOGRAM 1: Behaviour pattern observed and brief explanation on each pattern

Behaviour Pattern Swimming Pattern

Charging Movement

Mouth Movement

Opercular Cover (gills)

Brief explanation Any swimming movement made by both of the fish before and after the removal of the barrier. This involve whether the fish are moving up, down and how frequent that they moves up and down during both observation This includes movement of one or both of the fish towards its rival mate. Both fish only display its charging movement every time both of the fish meet each other. This includes any mouth movement prior and post to the removing of the barrier. This involves any changes to the size of opening mouth and whether the mouth open or close each time it encounter its rival. It also includes the opening of mouth when B.splendens swam to the surface for a while before the barrier was removed. This involves how rapid the gills move when both fish encountered each other as compared to when they are put in isolation process. This refer to any changes of the tail movement in term of the speed and how often the fish moves its tail in that particular way.

Tail Movement

Coloration

Changes in coloration of body part in term of the intensity of the colour and whether the colour changes after the fish meeting each other.

ETHOGRAM 2: Comparison of aggressive behaviour of B.splendens observed before and after the removal of the barrier. Behaviour pattern Brief explanation Before Swimming pattern of both B.splendens is quite different as fish B is more active than fish A. Fish A does not swim often to the surface part as much as fish B, instead it stayed for quite a long time at the bottom part of the tank. There were no charging movements displayed by both fish before exposed to each other.

After Both fish swam faster, both are moving up and down more frequent than when are alone. However, fish B is still more active than fish A. Both fish even moves left to right and up and down rapidly and more frequent each time they encountered each other. Charging movements were a bit slow at the first 10 minutes of observation after the barrier is removed. Later in the remaining 10 minutes, both fish are more active and started to shows some charging movement by moving towards each other. Mouth open more often as the two fish encountered each other. However the size is the same as before the barrier was removed. Gills movement are frequent after the barrier was removed. Fish B display its gills as it saw the other fish swim near to the transparent wall.

Swimming pattern

Charging Movement

Mouth Movement

Both fish shows normal size of opened mouth. Both males B.splendens only opened their mouth as they are swim up to the surface. Size of the mouth is normal for both fish.

Opercular (gills)

Cover Gills movement was not displayed during isolation.

Tail Movement

Tail movement was not rapid as observed in the Tail movement was very rapid, frequent and exposure experiment. The fish only display its rapid increase any time the fish meet its rival mate. It will and fast tail movements as it swim upward and moves it more faster as it approach its rival. downward.

Coloration

There was no changes in colour was observed

There was no changes in colour was observed. The colour of the body parts remain the same.
