Syllabus CE 156 Foundation Design

Instructor: Quarter: Lecture Time: Class Room: Office Hours: TA: Discussion: Anne Lemnitzer, Ph.D. (alemnitz@uci.edu) Spring 2012 Tue, Th 12:30 1:50 pm DBH 1600 Tue, Wed 2:00 3:00 pm Riccardo Cappa (cappar@uci.edu) Sessions: Fri 8:00-9:00, 9:00 10:00

Pre-requisites: CEE 130, 130L (Soil Mechanics + Soil Mechanics Lab) CEE 151C Reinforced Concrete Design Course Description CEE 156: Applications of soil mechanics principles to the analysis and design of shallow foundations, retaining walls, pile foundations, and braced cuts. Design criteria: bearing capacity, working loads and tolerable settlements, structural integrity of the foundation element Textbook: Braja M. Das, Principles of Foundation Engineering. 7th Edition, CL-Engineering, 2010, ISBN-13 9780495668107. Reference Textbooks: Bowles, J. Foundation Analysis and Design, 5th Edition, McGraw Hill, 1996.Day, R.W. Foundation Engineering Handbook, 1st Edition, McGraw Hill, 2005. ISBN: 0071447695/ 9780071447690 Homework/Project: There will be approximately 5 homework assignments during the quarter covering the material discussed during the lectures. Homework will be due at the date indicated on the assignment. Late homework will be accepted up to 1 day past the indicated deadline with a penalty of 20% of the total score. Make sure to turn in your homework as hard copy in the dropbox in Engineering Gateway or in person (with instructor or TA) at the indicated deadline. Homework should be written on engineering or white paper. No line paper for any assignment! A small real world design project will be assigned during the second half of class. The design project is due in finals week. The project will be conducted in groups of max 3 people per group. Attendance: Attendance is mandatory but will not be checked during lectures. Every student is responsible for his/her own class performance. Lecture material will not be repeated during Discussion session or Office hours. Individual studies are required in case of lecture absence! Discussion Sessions are intended to practice design examples not to repeat the lecture. There will be a few seminars on topics related to

geotechnical engineering during or outside class hours with guest speakers from the industry. Attendance to those seminars will be mandatory and will be counted in your homework grade percentage.

Grading Policy: Students performance will be assessed using Homework Assignments, Design Project, Midterm and Final examinations. The following percentages are assigned to the individual assessments: Midterm Exam: 25 % Letter grade: A: 90 100%, B: 80 89 % Final Exam: 35% C: 70 79%, D: 60 69 % Homework: 30% F: 0 59 % Design Project: 10%
