No irrelevant details (examples, statistics, explanations, quotations) are included. Excellent (3) The paragraph is welldeveloped, with a clear topic sentence and relevant supporting details. Ideas are connected to make the writing flow. Cohesive devices are used successfully and appropriately. Excellent (3) Author uses their own words to concisely express ideas from the text. Varied sentence structure is present (rel. pronouns, participles, indirect speech). Good (2) The paragraph contains a topic sentences and related details. Ideas are in logical order. Cohesive devices are used, but not always appropriately. Good (2) Author uses appropriate words from the text as well as the his/her own to write summary. The writing includes some sentence variety and appropriate word choice. Good (2) The central idea of the text is stated in the introductory sentence. Excellent (3) Accurate word/idiom choice; confident handling of appropriate structures to communicate efficiently. Hardly any errors.

Good (2) Language is generally accurate. Possibly some errors but errors do not impede communication.

Inadequate (0) The writing contains many serious errors in the conventions of English (grammar, punctuation, and spelling). Errors interfere with the readers understanding of the writing.
