and represents a special strand of terminological research, due to the fact that medicine is a domain in which concepts are in continuous change, thus bringing about a permanent renewal of specialized terms. The period after 1990 is a time span in which English influence has grown steadily and more powerful, is not less important than other periods of time in the evolution of the Romanian medical terminology, outlined in the introduction of the study. There is no knowledge, without terminology, this is the motto of the International Institute for Terminological Research, and we are totally agree with this affirmation because the development of the science attracts the appearance of new concept and, consequently, of new terms. The motivation to study this subject comes from the fact that the terminological import from English, an ongoing and intense phenomenon, as medicine implies continuous change, brings up in Romanian, as well as in other languages, problems of linguistic adjustment, at different levels in the formal register, that of specialized language, used in medical treatises, articles, and scientific communications, translations or manuals, generally characterized by more sustained terminological efforts, in the specialists jargon, which subsumes a less supervised terminology as well as a higher degree of language mixing, ambiguities, inadequate structures and errors, and the language for popularization. At the beginning it can be hypothesized that English medical language is the source of the new terms in the Romanian medical field, during the last 20 years. The amount of the new terms comprises not only simple borrowings, but also calques, abbreviations, symbols. The purpose of this research is to identify the common structural, morphological and semantic features of the medical terms in English and Romanian and to point out the differences and the changes that have been suffered by the borrowed terms. The main methods applied in this work are: description, classification, the methods of oppositions and the distributive analysis. In the theoretical chapter there are also used the methods of analysis and generalization. The objectives of the study are: to define the subject matter of terminology; to describe the main English Dictionaries of medical terms; to identify the structural, morphological and semantic peculiarities of the medical terms; to classify the terms according to criteria of the way of forming, structure and origin;
to compare the English and the Romanian medical terms; to analyse the borrowings from the English in the Romanian medical language.
The scientific value of the paper resides in the theories of terminology which we analise and support. According to the works of Arnold I. V., Akhmanova O., Melenciuc D., Cabre M. T. a term is a special word that refers to a certain scientific field and it reflects a concept, it is, usually, monosemantic and it doesnt have an emotional motivation. The practical value of the work is proved by the nowadays importance of the terminology as a science. The paper is useful for students of the Faculty of Foreign Languages because it provides synthesized knowledge from the different linguistic sciences: lexicology, terminography, morphology and semantics, and of the Faculty of Medicine because we can find a big amount of medical terms with their explanation, synonyms, and their context. Also, the research can be used by translators if we consider the comparative analysis which have been made. The novelty of the study consists, in one hand, in analysis of some recent theoretical sources in the domain (Cabre M. T., Antia B. E., Sterkerburg P., Cook G.) and in the other hand, in the comparative presentation of the terminological units. The present work includes the following structural components: table of contents, introduction, the two chapters and a bibliography, supplemented by a list of key-terms. The first chapter contains a synthesis of theoretical information about terminology and its application, terminography. The first part of the chapter presents the difference between word and term, from a semantic approach. In the second paragraph well read about the main theories developed towards the terminology, its founders and the principles formulated by the main linguists. The third section begins with the definition of the notion of terminography and presents a classification of the dictionaries and a description of the specialized dictionaries. In the last paragraph there is a description of the main dictionaries of medical terms: Oxfords Concise Medical Dictionary and Stedman Th. L. Stedmans Medical Dictionary. The second chapter of the research states the structural, morphological and semantic features of the medical terms in English and Romanian. The first part of this chapter analysis the ways of forming new terms and establishes their classification from the structural approach: simple, inflected, compound, complex, word combinations and syntactic structures. The next section is constituted by the morphological analysis of the terms. It is underlined the function of the Greek and Latin morphemes in the structure of medical terms. In the part of the paper that refers to the semantic peculiarities of the units in the question, it is realised a comparative analysis in order to prove the monolexical and arbitrary nature of the medical terms. The last paragraph deals with the borrowings from the English medical language that can be identified in the
Romanian medical texts. Such kind of analysis was needed taking in consideration the important influence of English on Romanian language, in generally. The examples that were analysed were selected from the dictionaries(Oxford Concise Medical Dictionary, Nstase C. Nstase V. Dicionar englez-romn de medicin i biologie, Stedman Th. L. Stedmans Medical Dictionary) and from the handbooks and guides used in the medical study(Bradu Iamandescu I. Manual de psihologie medical, Georgescu M. Ciurea T. Georgescu E. Semiologie medical ). The theoretical support of the study is constituted by the works of the authors that represent the traditional linguistics and that put the base of the terminology as a science: . . , . ., . . A Course in Modern Lexicology, Akhmanova O. Agapova G. Terminology: Theory and Method, Melenciuc D. A Reader in English Lexicology, and some more recent researches in the field, represented by Antia B. E. Indeterminacy in Terminology and LSP, Cabr M.T. Terminology. Theory, Methods and Applications, Sterkenburg P. A Practical Guide to Lexicography, Wright S. E. Budin G. Handbook of Terminology Management.
