IS UNDER IMPLEMENTATION THE PROJECT: 400 KV INTERCONNECTION LINE ELBASAN TIRANA 2 (ALBANIA)-PODGORICE (MONTENEGRO)
ELBASAN TIRANA 2 (ALBANIA) Financed by Italian Government; Duration of the project: 24 months The total length is approximately 47 km. Overall project value (Euro): 29 million Euro TIRANA 2 (ALBANIA)-PODGORICE (MONTENEGRO) Financed by KfW; Duration of the project: 24 months Overall project value (Euro): 42 million Euro The total length is approximately 156 km. For the first part of the line Tirana 2 to Vau Dejes, the towers will be for double circuit (78 km), to be used also for the 400 kV interconnection line Albania-Kosovo. Moreever, Albania would need to further increase its capacities of interconnection lines

The main components of the Project are:

400 kV bay in Kosovo B substation; 400 kV bay in Tirana 2 ; 400 kV single circuit / twin bundle Kosovo B(KS) Vau Dejes(AL) section; 400 kV double circuit / twin bundle (second circuit) Vau Dejes Tirana 2 section. The total line length is 239 km and the lengths of three sections are: 1. Section Kosovo B Albanian border 2. Section Albanian border Vau Dejes 3. Section Vau Dejes Tirana 2 85.5 km; 75.5 km; 78.0 km

The main benefits of the interconnection line

The new interconnection line: enhances the reliability of Kosovo and Albanian systems and improves to greater extend the reliability of the Regional interconnected system( neighboring countries) representing a necessary reinforcement of the regional networks; realize important cost saving in operation through joint and coordinating operations of both power systems; allow to realize an short-term and medium term generation dispatch optimization of the hydrologic and thermal resources of Albania and Kosovo; guarantee up to year 2020 the reliable operation of the interconnected Transmission Systems and ensure an adequate transfer capability to allow for the economic Exchange of electricity between Kosovo and Albania; mitigate some congestion problems on regional interconnected transmission system related with the Critical North South corridor through a decreasing the maximum power and annual energy transits;

THE MAIN COMPONENTS OF THE PROJECT ARE:

400 kV overhead transmission line from 400/220/110 kV Bitola substation up to Elbasan substation, around 128 km. 400 kV transmission line Elbasan - Durres around 70 km. Construction of the new AC/DC substations in Durres and Foggia. Construction of new submarine cable from Durres substation to Foggia substation, approximately 330km.

The main benefits of the interconnection line are:

The new 400 KV OHTL and Submarine cable interconnection among FYR OF MACEDONIA-ALBANIA-ITALY will have positive effect on the regional network performance. From an economic point of view, the benefits due to transmission interconnection Macedonia-Albania-Italy would exceed the total investment cost with a benefit-cost ratio of 3.0 over the study period. Also, some other benefits of this project are the increase of the revenue from the electricity transit, the increase of the system reliability, sharing reserve capacities, etc.
