like beer, I only eat chocolate made from
hooves and brown food colouring, the kind we
now have to call chocolate avoured, and
(whisper it) I dont like wam es. I especially never
liked Brussels wam es, those gigantic rectangular
ones, which have always seemed to me to be little
more than a corrugated cardboard excuse to eat
whipped cream and chocolate sauce.
But now, nally, I get the Brussels wam e, and
my conversion came courtesy of the Amigo Hotel,
just a wam es throw from the Grand Place. The
hotel, located in a 16th-century former prison, is
one of a number oering Brusselicious
Breakfasts this year: a selection of local and
regional specialities designed to celebrate
Brussels 2012 festival of food. I thought the
Amigo would be a good bet because the hotel
wears its Belgian credentials proudly; there are
Marcolini chocolates in all the rooms, Tintin-
themed weekends, and a suite tted out by
Delvaux, the Belgian luxury leather manufacturer.
As predicted, theyve taken the Belgian breakfast
brief very seriously: theres Ardennes ham and
pt, Chimay and Bailly cheeses and a traditional
tarte au sucre, a thin, short pastry base lled with
caramelised brown sugar and cream (hello,
diabetes, my old friend). Even the Belberry jams are
local. Then there are those wam es. Martha Stewart
tried an Amigo wam e when she came to Belgium,
apparently, and I doubt she was disappointed.
Mine was served warm, crisp on the outside, soh
and springy within, with a subtle avour of fresh
yeast. I would happily have had a second and Ive
never said that about a wam e, ever. Perhaps my
residence permit is safe for another year?

Petit djeuner Bruxelles avec Emma Beddington
t rnIs unt bien pitre Bruxelloise : je
naime pas la bire et je ne mange que du
chocolat bourr de colorants et de glatine
larme de chocolat . Et, jose peine lavouer, je
naime pas les gaufres qui mont toujours sembl
une excuse en carton ondul pour sempirer de
chantilly et de sauce au chocolat.
Mais lhtel Amigo ma ouvert les yeux.
deux pas de la Grand Place, cet htel est lun des
participants aux Brusselicious Breakfasts de cette
anne, une slection de spcialits locales et
rgionales dans le cadre du festival Brusselicious
2012. LAmigo me semblait une bonne option,
lhtel am chant rement sa belgitude, avec
ses chocolats Marcolini dans les chambres, ses
week-ends Tintin et sa suite Delvaux dcore par
le clbre maroquinier de luxe belge.
Comme escompt, lAmigo, on ne plaisante
pas avec le petit djeuner belge : jambon et pt
des Ardennes, fromages Chimay et Bailly et une
traditionnelle tarte au sucre brun caramlis et
la crme sur pte brise (diabte, mon amour).
Mme les contures Belberry sont locales.
Et puis il y a ces gaufres. La reine du fait
maison Martha Stewart en a got une lors
dune visite en Belgique et je doute quelle nait t
due. La mienne a t servie chaude, croustillante
lextrieure et moelleuse lintrieur, avec un
arme subtil de levure frache. Jen aurais bien pris
une seconde ! Finalement, je crois quils vont me
renouveler mon permis de sjour

pas moins obsde de restaurants et de gteaux.

Theres an experienced
brasserie team behind
this new all-day venture
in Auderghem (theyre
also responsible for the
reinvigorated Le Petit Pont
in Uccle) and the area could
certainly do with more food
options. Wavre Avenue looks
promising, with a 28 three-
course menu and a range
of all-day snacks salads,
pasta and brasserie classics
like steak tartare, prepared
in front of you on an old-
fashioned meat mincer.

This is a no-frills Asian
canteen oering variants on
pad thai, fried rice and dim
sum-style snacks. Inspired
by the street food of South-
East Asia, owner Mathieu
Damman has created a
bright, simple space with
speedy counter service.
In addition to the rice and
noodle staples, theres also a
slightly more elaborate dish
of the day (usually a curry or
stir fry) and a salad option.
