Welcome to preliminary round of the 6th Annual SPPf Pokemon Examination!

You will be required to answer six parts of one big question. All of these questions are themed around a picture provided at the beginning to all the questions. Provided that you have a reliable internet connection, this should not take you more than 20 minutes. You will have 20 minutes to complete this question. If you run out of time, the answers that you have completed will be automatically submitted. You have until Tuesday 7th June 2011 to complete this test. Please try to finish it before. The faster you finish, the faster we can move on to the next rounds! Use of an online resource (such as a Serebii.net Pokedex) is allowed and it is recommended that you make use of any such resource. Good luck! 1. This question deals with Natures. Below is a picture showing some details about a Pokemon. Answer the questions that follow. *This question tests knowledge of the fourth generation Pokemon games.

(a) Natures are known for having a beneficial, hindering or neutral effect on the stats of a Pokemon. The Pokemon above has its own nature. Towards which stat is: (i) this nature beneficial? a.i. beneficial towards: SPEED (1 point) (ii) this nature a hindrance? a.ii. hindrace towards: DEFENSE (1 point) (b) A Pokemon may have one of several different natures. Some natures have completely opposing effects. An adamant nature is said to be completely opposite to a modest nature. Which nature is completely opposite to the nature referenced in the picture above? b. completely opposite to: RELAXED NATURE (1 point) (c) (i) Suggest what is meant by 'neutral natures' and list three examples of 'neutral natures'. c.i. neutral nature definition (2 points) + three neutral natures (3 points) [TOTAL 5 POINTS] 2 points if the following idea is conveyed: nature which benefits and hinders the SAME stat (and thus has a net effect of zero on that stat);

1.5 points if the following idea is conveyed: nature which has no net effect on a Pokemon's stats OR nature which does not benefit or hinder the (overall) stats of a Pokemon; 1 point if vague (i.e. a response which does not convey the idea of a negative/positive or beneficial/hindering effect and that the overall net effect is zero)

three neutral natures from the following: serious, bashful, quirky, docile, hardy
(ii) List four ingredients which could be used to make poffins that the Pokemon above would not enjoy eating. c.ii. poffins are made from berries, so the types of berries disliked by hasty Pokemon will suffice (the sour berries): Apicot Aspear Belue Colbur Durin Grepa Iapapa Jaboca Kebia Kelpsy Lansat Leppa Nomel Oran Payapa Persim Petaya Pinap Qualot Rabuta Rowap Salac Sitrus Starf Tanga Wacan Wepear Yache (4 points because four berries had to be named) (*Stating: "sour" would only gain 1 point without explanation. 1.5 points will be given if you explain that hasty Pokemon dislike sour foods. *Stating: any sweet berries will not get credit; any dry, bitter or spicy berries will not credit because the the Pokemon may not necessarily enjoy dry, bitter or spicy flavors but it does not necessarily dislike them either) (d) Using any information in the picture presented, briefly discuss the possibility that the Pokemon above was "apparently met at Level 23 at Route 230" in a North American version of a Pokemon game. d. Discussing the possibility that the Pokemon was "apparently met at Level 23 at Route 230" in a North American version of a Pokemon game. (4 points)

This question proved to be the most difficult one in the preliminary test. This was the question which was intended
to discriminate between the stronger candidates and the weaker candidates.

The important words from this question were:

"possibility" "met at Level 23 at Route 230" "North American version"

The important information from the picture:

the date of capture, Route of capture (230) and level of capture (23), understanding that the Pokemon was traded ("apparently") =>if it was argued IMPOSSIBLE (4 points) It is impossible that this Pokemon was caught in ANY North American DPPt game if the date of capture is real; because NA games came out after 2006; So the Pokemon must have been traded as a Togepi from a Japanese game (which did come out in 2006); this Togepi was caught by a Jap. trainer at Route 230 at Level 23 with Pokeradar

=>if it was argued POSSIBLE (4 points) But since dates can be manually altered; Then, yes, completely possible; Because Togepi CAN be caught on Route 230 at Level 23 with Pokeradar in NA version;

And it was traded;

*after looking at everyone's answer, I decided that I would credit 1 point if the candidate stated that Togepi can be caught at Lv. 23 @ R. 230 *Common mistakes alluded to hacking and stating that it was impossible to catch the Pokemon at Lv. 23 @ R. 230. *Any mention of hacking would only be considered after you conclude that it is either impossible/possible to catch this Pokemon at Lv. 23 @ R. 230. *The only time it was entirely impossible to get this Pokemon at Lv. 23 @ R. 230 on an NA game was if the date was real. *The only time it was entirely possible to get this Pokemon at Lv. 23 @ R. 230 on an NA game was if the date was altered (not real). *This is how you should think about this question: Can Togepi be caught at Lv. 23 on Route 230 in any NA DPPt game? Yes. If you answered no for this question then you probably messed up the entire question. The question prompted you to use any information in the picture. The date of capture was present in the picture. The date could either be real or not. The consequences of the date being real or not are discussed above.
