A GUIDE TO FREELY AVAILABLE AND SEARCHABLE INTERNET DATABASES FOR FREELANCE, START-UPS AND SMALL BUSINESS SAFETY DATA

SHEETS WRITERS

Theodore M. Amet Global HazCom Documents Writer

Racine, Wisconsin

June, 2012

Preface The Aha! moment for writing this guide came when I started writing Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) at Easterday Fluid Technologies, LLC, a manufacturer of industrial ink and ink related products. Since chemicals/raw substances are used in product manufacturing, the law requires manufacturers to provide customers Material Safety Data Sheets. Although I was trained to draft and write Material Safety Data Sheets with MSDS authoring software (e.g. EnviroMSDS, SAP, The WERCS), those platforms were not available to me at Easterday. We used Microsoft Office Suite to prepare GHS compliant Safety Data Sheets (according to EU Directives and Guidance Documents) to accompany ink and ink related products for clients in Europe and elsewhere. Our efforts in researching guidance documents, physical, chemical and toxicological properties of substances, and country specific regulatory information on the Internet (in addition to product literature from chemical manufacturers) yielded adequate information for creating Safety Data Sheets according to European Union regulations and standards using only Microsoft Word, rather than a specialized, and expensive, authoring program. We believe this guide will be invaluable to writers of Safety Data Sheets everywhere, especially those in small companies, and those wanting to use it as a reference document when their Safety Data Sheets/Material Safety Data Sheets authoring system is down. With your help, we will be able to keep abreast with European Chemical Regulations and update this guide as new regulations become available. If you know of additional links to free chemical, environmental, health, and toxicological databases on the Internet, please e-mail the link(s) to us at safety.writer@gmail.com . We will promptly add it in this guide. Please acknowledge this guide in Section 15 of your Safety Data Sheet whenever you use it as one of your sources for information. Thank you for your participation.

Authors Biography Dr. Theodore M. Amet is Manager, Global GHS Compliant SDSs, Labels, and MSDSs Projects at Easterday Fluid Technologies, LLC, in Saint Francis, Wisconsin. He holds a Bachelors degree in Agriculture Science from the University of Liberia, and worked as a Seed Technologist Assistant at WARDA (West Africa Rice Development Association) before joining the faculty in the College of Agriculture and Forestry, University of Liberia. Subsequently, he earned a Masters degree in Genetics (major) and Development Studies (minor) from the University College of Wales-Swansea (Swansea University) and a Ph.D. in Animal Science and Biotechnology from North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina. That was followed by a postdoctoral appointment in Molecular Reproductive Biology in the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Cell Biology at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. He also trained in clinical experimental embryology at the Reproductive Genetics Institute in Chicago, Illinois. He earned an MBA in General Management from Loyola University Chicagos School of Business Administration, Chicago, Illinois. His exposure to chemical regulations came when he worked in the Department of Global Safety Assessment and Regulatory Affairs (GSARA) at S.C. Johnson & Son, Inc. of Racine, Wisconsin. He served as Raw Substance Steward (RSS), MSDS drafter, and Regulatory Research Analyst while at S.C. Johnson. Dr. Amet is a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the Society for Chemical Hazard Communication (SCHC).
