GUIDELINES FOR FEEDING A CHILD

(Eating is active process, do not force or threat the child to eat)

1. Review chart, find special order for fluid and diet.


2. Assess likes and dislikes of child, exactly what does the child want today and
now.
3. Prepare the food separately for the child rather than sharing from the family food.
4. Serve variety of foods, bring frequent changes in menu.
5. Ensure appropriate proportion of nutrients i.e. Carbohydrates, Proteins, Fat, vital
elements and Minerals.
6. Prepare soup, juice, kanji yourself rather than buying from outside. It ensures
cleanliness and quality of stuff.
7. Discourage commercially prepared and canned food stuff which carries
preservatives.
8. Serve in small frequent serves.
9. Consider special needs of the child based on ability of child to eat and digest.
10. Fix the time of serving meals everyday and follow consciously.
11. Serve the food in pleasant manner, colorful and designed foods attract the child
and encourage eating.
12. Make mealtime quite and pleasant, e.g. music, songs, stories, games etc. can be
introduced.
13. Let the child join in with the family at mealtime, it will enable the child to see and
learn to eat participate in table conversation, table manners and family fellowship.
14. Allow the child to eat himself if possible despite he/she spills.
15. Prevent distracters while feeding, e.g. many people around, noise and physical
discomfort.
16. Discourage excessive milk intake unless child is exclusively breast fed.
17. Children with neurological deficit need special consideration.
If needed:-
• Provide special modified chair or support the child well while feeding.
• Keep the child in fowler or sitting position, mother’s lap can be the best.
• Do not feed the child if child is sleeping, drowsy, coughing, and vomiting
persistently, and has difficulty in breathing.
• Provide semisolid diet to the child who has risk of aspiration or regurgitation.
• Provide small sips of water after feeds.
• Consider use of specially made vessels for morbid child.
18. Record food offered, amount of food taken by the child and child’s behavior while
eating.
19. Always involve the parents or other care giver while planning and feeding the
child.
20. Precisely measure the weight of the child.
