fortunate and for his invaluable contribution to the success of RCHS projects, notably medical-dental missions. President-Nominee Ped Condeno introduced the incoming club officers and committee chairpersons for RY 2009-2010 led by President Linda Palattao. Charter President Nides Respicio shared with the group the struggles of the Club during its inception and mentioned the full support of Sammy Vera Cruz (a charter member who was present that night) as the 2nd last man standing. He thanked Rotary leaders PDS Salvador Viari, AG Edmund Chiu and, in particular, PDG Danny Fausto, for their continuous support in ensuring the survival of the Club. IPP Dodgie Osabel talked on the Clubs major projects and accomplishments for RY 2008-2009, to wit: LCD community billboard, relief aid to typhoon victims, urban gardening, medical/dental missions, Christmas gift-giving, and Community Partnership for Peace and Development. Meanwhile, incoming President Linda Palattao challenged the Club members not to rest until all plans and projects shall have been successfully completed. She stressed that help for the underprivileged should not be in the form of dole-outs, but through livelihood programs that will have a lasting impact in their lives. PDG Danny Fausto referred to RCHS as one of the rising stars of Rotary International District 3780. He exhorted the Club to aim for bigger and higher goals, and to go and SERVE as a team. He also advised to focus on membership retention and growth, upon which rests the clubs survival. He urged the members to share their talents and blessings with the less fortunate members of the community, and be an inspiration to all.

Cozy, nicely-decorated venue. Delightful food. Good music. Well-prepared program. Challenging and inspiring talks and messages. Great bonding among Rotarians and guests. Lively singing. All these sum up to what was a fitting celebration of the Clubs 4th Charter Anniversary last June 29, 2009 at the Tahanang Pangkabuhayan Building, Barangay Holy Spirit Complex. The heavy downpour and ensuing heavy traffic did not dampen the spirits of the attendees who cam to celebrate an important event. recognition to individuals and institutions that have greatly contributed to the success of RCHS and its projects. The following were recognized: PDG Danny Fausto, PDS Salvador Viari, AG Mel Jaingue, AG Edmund Chiu, AG Chito Borromeo, Barangay Chair Estrella Valmocina, Charter President Nides Respicio, SM Foundation represented by Mr Bob Navida, Unilab represented by PP Romy Robles of RC Central Edsa, MMDA represented by Manny Rueda, Capt Manuel Madrid of DAHHA, and Milo Valdez. A posthumuous award was given to the late PDG George Howard whose perseverance and commitment resulted in the birth of RCHS. The award was received by his widow, Mrs Mel Howard. Many thanks to our Club Administration chairman Ped Condeno for a wonderful job of leading the members to do their assigned jobs, which is in line with the methodology of Club Administration. Hand in hand, we must all continue the work of improving the lives of the people whose concern are in our hands. Let me thank also the spouses Ric and Marcia Salvador for their wonderful job of preparing our weekly bulletins. RCHS Officers attend CATS

Pres Linda Palattao, PE Lyds Pedernal and Club Admin Chair Ped Condeno attended the CATS (Club Administration Training Seminar) last July 11, 2009 at the Dolcelatte in Quezon Avenue. The CATS is a special training program for Club Administrators (Club Presidents, Club Secretaries, Club Administration Committee Chairmen and Members as well as future club leaders) to ensure a more effective club administration leading to a successful Rotary year. The very first CATS for RY 2009-2010 was hosted by RC San Francisco del Monte, RC Talipapa, RC Kamuning West, RC Commonwealth, RC San Bartolome, RC Cubao South and RC Midtown QC. An estimated 200 Rotarians attended the seminar.

Not too many people know that the Rotary Club of Holy Spirit is already 4 years old. The Club was chartered on June 29, 2004 with Atty Nides Respicio as Charter President. --ooo The RCHS is the only Rotary Club in the whole world with a Holy Spirit in its name a one and only which Past District Governor Danny Fausto always mentions with pride. --ooo--

Clients go to the Clinic for advice on how to start a business or how not to fail in business. --ooo-One of the most ardent supporters of the RCHS is SM Foundation Inc which was recently recognized by the Club for its humanitarian efforts in helping depressed communities. After a very successful Medical-Dental Mission (with surgical component on both) last year attended by more than a thousand poor beneficiaries from Barangay Holy Spirit, the SM Foundation delivered once more a complete line-up of medical-dental services yesterday, July 22. This included ECG, X-ray and bone scanning. --ooo--
The first woman District Governor of District 3780 is a very eloquent speaker, very energetic and well-loved,DG Dulce de Borja Coyukiat. Before her election to the prestigious top post of the District, she was also the first woman assistant governor of the district. She served as President of RC Centerpoint Sta Mesa in 1997-1998 and of RC Kagitingang Cubao in 2004-2005. Only recently, SM Foundation Inc also donated books --ooo-and bags to the RCHS which will be turned over to one st Like DG Dulce, RCHS has also a 1 woman president in public high school and one elementary school in the the person of Emelinda Palattao, educator and entrepre- barangay.

Barangay Holy Spirit hosts Medical-Dental Mission

RCHS participated in a Medical-Dental Mission jointly sponsored by the SM Foundation Inc and the National Council for Disability Affairs (NCDA) held at the covered court of Barangay Holy Spirit yesterday, July 22, 2009. The mission was part of the NCDAs program of activities to celebrate the 31st National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week (July 17-23) with the theme: Tungo sa Katuparan ng Karapatan ng PWDs. In the forefront of medical doctors was our very own PP Dr Roger Belleza who brought with him doctorcolleagues and nurses from Capitol Medical Center. Also supporting the mission was Dr Manny Po (who was assisted by his doctor-wife) and Mrs Chit Reyes (who dispensed the de-worming medicines), thru the kind courtesy of President Mar Reyes of RC SFDM. The Medical-Dental Mission drew support from other organizations, i.e., PCSO, DOTC, DILG, DOH Center for Health Dev, Phil Coast Guard, Bureau of Fire Protection Emergency Medical Services. Although the mission was meant for physically-disabled patients, it also accommodated those without disability but who needed medical attention. A total of about 1500 patients were served. In addition to medical-dental services, the following were also offered: ECG, X-ray, bone density scanning, audiological and ophthalmological check-ups.

Everyone felt great in the inaugural and the two succeeding meetings of the club. The inaugural meeting was like the clubs grand reunion with no less than PDG Danny Fausto present. Everybody was in a laughing mood with the presentation of Joy Flores and Doc. Roger Belleza. We missed them both in our last meeting. Our Chairman for Service Committee reported enthusiastically on the unveiling of the marker for the Magnegosyo Clinic and the initial consultation meeting done last July 16th. The New Generation Chairman Baby Lorenzo must probably like her assignment because she has started working on her project and was touched by my acceptance speech during our anniversary that she decided to be present in all our meetings. We have lined up a number of projects for this year which will keep us all very busy. We are in Rotary to promote friendship among members and to help those people, whose lives are our concern, realize their dream of a better world. Because we have very limited means, we are enthusiastic about promoting synergy to maximize our performance. Our first three meetings were all very interesting. They were properly and painstakingly prepared by our Club Administration Chairman. We intend to keep it that way. Keep faith with us, as we do with you all. RCHS Rotarians listen intently to the slide presentation of Col. Agpaoa (Inset) from RC Agoo. He presented local crime statistics and encouraged RCHS and CPPD to spearhead the setting up of a Police Assistance Center which he will support. PRES LINDA REPORTS ON THE FIRST HANDS-ON PRESIDENTS MEETING The following were highlights of the meeting attended by Pres Linda and other District 3780 Hands-on presidents last July 18, 2009:
Urban planning We are being urged to conduct a tree planting project to save our environment. Water Manila Water is willing to provide P150,000 to any club whose project will provide clean potable water and/or clean toilets to schools and other depressed areas. Micro-financing If we will have a micro-financing project, Anton Sayo of RC Green Meadows will help by providing lectures on how it should be done, the mechanics and how to source money for the project. TV exposure A UNTV representative is inviting us to have a free TV exposure in projecting our image not only locally but internationally. Tuberculosis prevention In case we have a project on tuberculosis prevention or medication, the RC Agham will conduct a Kapihan in August and December. New Members Academy The district now has an academy for new members. It will be held on September 5 from 9AM to 5PM. The attendees will be given diplomas, not just certificate
of attendance. It is advisable that new members attend so that they will know the abcs of Rotary. Lupang Pangako We can also conduct medical missions at Lupang Pangako any time provided we call Dr Irene Santos of RC Agham. Distas for Interact and Rotaract clubs This is scheduled on September 12, 2009. For a P3,000.00 fee, we can send 10 participants. School-based New Generation Clubs: Earlyact - ages 5-11 years old Interact - ages 12-18 years old Rotaract - ages 18-30 years old A meeting was held last August 1 for those who wanted to organize any of the newgeneration clubs. Literacy We are urged to conduct alternative learning projects or computer literacy projects. Basketball tournament scheduled on August 8, 2009. Only Rotarians can be members of a team. Fee is P12,000. Bowling tournament will be at Sta Lucia Bowling Center starting on Sept 30. Fee is P3,500 per club plus P125 per person per game. Botika ng Bayan If we are interested to sponsor a Botika ng Bayan, the prospective entrepreneur will be given P25,000 worth of medicines to start the project. Training was conducted on July 29, 2009.

RCHS HAS A NEW MEMBER

Attending the fellowship-meeting last Aug 6, 2009 was Engr Jose Joe B del Rosario Jr, a civil engineer by profession, who is a water resources development specialist. Formerly Administrator of the National Irrigation Authority, Joe is now Chairman & President of Hydro Terre Consultants Inc, and Chairman of Kinderheim Preschool and Grade School in our community. Joe is married to Naty, a medical doctor. Dr. Naty is President of the Parish Pastoral Council of St. Benedict. Joe and wife are residents of Don Antonio Heights. They have three (3) children. Joe gamely sang a few songs during the fellowship night. Welcome, Joe!
RCHS MILK FEEDING PROGRAM GETS A BOOST

During the regular meeting last July 23, 2009, PDG Danny Fausto announced the allotment of P50,000 for the milk feeding program of RCHS. The amount is from a P2 million grant from Senator Juan Ponce Enrile to RC New Manila East for its continuing/ expanded milk feeding program. The amount will enable us to feed fifty (50) malnourished pre-school children in Barangay Holy Spirit for a period of 120 days. Preparations are underway for the implementation of the RCHS feeding program to be supervised by the Community Service Projects and New Generation Committees chaired by PE Lyds Pedernal and Rtn Kgd Baby Lorenzo. Last July 30, 2009, six (6) of our members attended the Inter-city meeting at Club Pilipino. Our guest speaker for the day was Chief Justice Reynato Puno. He talked on the value of our right to vote. For more than 300 years of Spanish regime, the Filipinos did not enjoy the right to vote. It was only in the Malolos Constitution of 1899 that our right to vote was recognized. The right was reiterated in the Philippine Bill of 1902. History shows that our first general elections where we voted was held in 1907. After 100 years, Scholars of Philippine politics take the view that our people have failed to exercise their right to vote in choosing the brightest and the best to lead our country. There are three reasons given by these scholars, namely:
Patron-client, factional interpretation of Phil. Politics: Because of linguistic, property and literacy qualifications, many were frustrated to exercise their right to vote. The elites ruled our elections, even if on paper the masses are sovereign. Patrimonial Interpretation: The view emphasizes that our elections are won and lost by how effectively dominant families, their minions and private armies intimidate voters, tamper with voting procedures and violate the sovereign will of our electorate. Neocolonial interpretation: That foreign intervention has influenced the exercise of the right to vote of our people.

Justice Puno concluded his speech by stressing that It is the future of democracy that is on the line in every election. In truth, it is not the unsuccessful candidate who is the greatest loser in a manipulated and fraudulent election, but we, the people whose right to vote who will be our rulers is desecrated. Let us fight for the sanctity of our right to vote lest our treasured democracy becomes simply a tyranny of the powerful who manipulate the majority. Our AG Chito Borromeo informed me that he is working on the project of getting us a sister club from an Asian Country nearby so that we can avail of a grant that will help us implement our planned projects. With this development, we will be able to achieve our goal of making a difference in so many peoples lives in our community. Remember that true service lies in selflessness and humility. We must pool our efforts, time and resources in striving to build a better, more beautiful and peaceful world for those people whose lives is our concern. Interact Club is organized in Holy Spirit

The meeting was attended by 12 members and a guest from RC San Juan, La Union. The Securities & Exchange Commission has approved the Articles of Incorporation and By-Laws of the Rotary Club of Holy Spirit, Inc. on August 12, 2009, thus granting our Club juridical personality as a non-stock, non-profit organization under the laws of the Philippines. Of the 800 Rotary Clubs in the Philippines, 295 have registered themselves with the SEC - 243 as foundations and 52 others as non-stock corporations like RCHS. Our Club will exist for a term of 50 years. We are now completing registration with the BIR and city hall.

What is Interact?
President Linda, New Generation Chair Kgd Baby Lorenzo, PE Lyds Pedernal and other Rotarians have been busy organizing an Interact Club in Holy Spirit. What is Interact? Interact is Rotary Internationals service club for young people ages 14 to 18. Interact clubs are sponsored by individual Rotary clubs, which provide support and guidance, but they are self-governing and self-supporting. Club membership varies greatly. Clubs can be single gender or mixed, large or small. They can draw from the student body of a single school or from two or more schools in the same community. Each year, Interact clubs complete at least two community service projects, one of which furthers international understanding and goodwill. Through these efforts, Interactors develop a network of friendships with local and overseas clubs and learn the importance of

Well-attended District Membership Seminar is held

District 3780, with RC Loyoya Heights as host, conducted the 2009 District Membership Seminar last August 22, 2009 where attendees were given updates on RI membership goals as well as information on best practices concerning member recruitment and retention. Among the keynote speakers was PP Mercy Ong of RC of Malate who has just returned from Birmingham where she received the award for the club with the highest membership growth rate in the world. During her term
in 2008-2009, RC Malate grew from having only 10 members to 95 members by the end of her term as president. PP Mercy related the actions she took to recruit and retain members. Our President Linda and Membership Chair Rtn Ric Salvador attended the seminar. It was attended by 136 participants from 44 clubs., including 30 presidents

RCHS gets guidance from RCNME on Milk Feeding

Gracing the Clubs meeting last August 27, 2009 was businessman Eduardo Duke Zuluaga, President of RC of New Manila East (RCNME), whose club was given a P2 million grant by Senator Juan Ponce Enrile through Mayor Sonny Belmonte. RCNME has generously allotted P50,000 to RCHS to undertake its first-ever milk feeding program. During the meeting, Pres Duke gave important tips in conducting the program, having been actively involved in his clubs continuing milk feeding program in Barangay Toro Hills. Among others, he suggested the involvement of the parents of the malnourished children in the program. He reminded all of the importance of preparing well for the launching of the feeding program. In this regard, PE Chair Lyds Pedernal of the Service Projects Committee reported that she, together with Rtn Kgd Lowell Custodio, had met with the new principal of Dona Juana Elementary School, from where 50 Grade I malnourished pupils had bee chosen to be beneficiaries of the program. These children had been weighed and were scheduled for de-worming last Friday, August 29. Rtn Kgd Baby Lorenzo also reported that the members of the newly-organized Interact were prepared to help in the milk feeding program.

Tree-planting Project held on August 31, 2009

In pursuance of the Clubs commitment to preserve Mother Earth, a tree-planting project was successfully undertaken last August 31, 2009. One hundred (100) malunggay cuttings were planted along Faustino Street at Barangay Holy Spirit. The festive undertaking was jointly participated in by RCHS, AQCHAI led by its President Danny Mendoza who donated the malunggay cuttings, and the Barangay Holy Spirit led by Chairman Neneng Valmocina. Fifteen (15) RCHS members came to lend a hand.

What is this malunggay tree that Rotarians and ka-barangays cheerfully planted last August 31st ?
Malunggay, or moringa oleifera, is promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a low-cost health enhancer. An ideal tree to grow in the city or countryside, malunggay will give food, fodder, fuelwood and shade. Its pods make a tasty, nutritious vegetable. You can eat its tender leaves and flowers too. The leaves also make excellent livestock feed. Best of all, this useful tree grows quickly and easily in many different climates. Gram for gram, malunggay leaves contain four times the calcium and two times the protein in milk. It also contains seven times the vitamin C in oranges, three times the potassium in bananas, and four times the vitamin A in carrots. Aside from improving human health, there are other significant uses. In The Moringa Tree by Dr. Martin L. Price (http://www.echonet.org), he cites the moringa leaf extract as a plant growth hormone, the moringa shoots as green manure to enrich agricultural lands, moringa leaves as livestock feed because of its rich protein content, moringa seed powder and the fresh cake left over from oil extraction as treatment for turbid water, moringa as a good live fence tree with its bark used to make mats and rope, and the compound in the flowers and roots of the moringa tree, pterygospermin, as a powerful antibiotic and antifungal remedy.

Importance of Bringing in New Members
By John Kenny, President, Rotary International I have always thought it important to bear in mind that Rotary is a voluntary organization, composed of people who are all themselves leaders. When addressing such an audience, I have never thought it fitting to exhort or demand. Every Rotary club is and must be autonomous: The leadership of Rotary International exists not to control, but to motivate and guide. And so when we in Rotary speak about the importance of membership, I believe it of the utmost importance to bear in mind that the primary experience of Rotary, for the overwhelming majority of Rotarians, is of the club: of club meetings, club projects, and fellow club members. When Paul Harris began the first Rotary club 104 years ago, he did not initially think of service. Instead, he had in mind a place where people of good character, intelligence, and morals could enjoy each others fellowship and friendship. The service came later, as a natural outgrowth of the gathering of such people. Every good Rotarian, every member who shares our core values, will make a club that much stronger, and that much more attractive for others to join. Unfortunately, it is also the case that bringing in the wrong person can have the opposite effect. Rotarians are and must be people of a certain caliber people with the capacity to do great deeds, the sense to do them wisely, and the strength of character to do them honestly and well. In the end, I believe that the best way to bring new members into Rotary is the way it has been done for generations: One member invites a carefully chosen friend, client, or colleague to a meeting and, if the match is a good one, proposes that individual for membership. This is the way that our clubs remain harmonious; it is the way that new clubs become old clubs, and new members become Rotarians for life. The membership challenges that we face today are considerable, and in many ways new. There is no denying the difficulties posed by the current global financial situation. But in the words of Henry Ford, If money is your hope for independence you will never have it. The only real security that a man will have in this world is a reserve of knowledge, experience, and ability. And as long as we all do our jobs well, and bring in new members carefully, this is a security we in Rotary will never lack. (From Rotary Crossroads WB of RC Singapore Aug 10, 2009)

PALATTAO We are very lucky that RTN Eduardo Duke Zuluaga, President of RC New Manila East, was able to attend our last meeting to explain the mechanics and the dos and donts of the Milk Feeding Project which he generously shared with our Club. Congratulations to the Chairman of our Service Projects Committee, Dr Lyds Pedernal and Rtn Kgd Lowell Custodio for the selection and successful weighing of the fifty (50) students from the Dona Juana Elementary School. Our Interact Club will soon be registered with the Rotary International, thanks to Rtn Kgd Baby Lorenzos diligent efforts to get the names of its members and supervising their meeting. Let us also thank IPP Cong Dodgie Osabel for generously donating the tables and chairs for our new office at the Multipurpose Building of St Benedict Parish. Finally, we will have a permanent venue for our weekly meetings. I would also like to thank all the officers and members of our club who are now actively participating in all our projects and in attending our regular weekly meetings. Only through a strong and effective club can we ensure the future of our club and to continue our work of touching peoples lives to build a better, more beautiful and truly peaceful world

PREPARATIONS ARE UNDERWAY FOR DISTRICT 3780 GOVERNORS VISIT ON SEPTEMBER 30

During the meeting on September 3, 2009, discussions centered on the official visit to RCHS of RI District 3780 Governor Dulce de Borja Coyukiat to be held on September 30, 2009 at the Don Antonio Heights Clubhouse. This day also marks the Clubs turnover and induction ceremonies. Ever-supportive PDG Danny Fausto who was invited during the meeting gave guidelines on the conduct of a successful Governors Visit that will be mutually beneficial to the Governor and the Club. The visit, which will precede the turnover and induction rites, is broken down into three (3) important segments: One on One Meeting of Club President with RI District Governor Executive Meeting with Club Officers and Committee Chairmen Club Assembly The Governors Visit is a very significant event for the Club and all the members are urged to be present on September 30.

The history of The Four-Way Test

Abstracted from an article written by Paul Engleman The Rotarian -- August 2009
It is a story so familiar to most Rotarians that it has evolved beyond lore and become assimilated into the genetic code of the organization. In 1932, Herbert J. Taylor, the newly appointed president of a nearly bankrupt Chicago cookware company, believing his employees were in need of an ethical yardstick, wrote four questions on a small, white piece of paper:
When Taylor penned what came to be known as The Four-Way Test, the country was in the grip of the Great Depression, and there was widespread distrust of banks and corporations after the stock market crash three years earlier. At the Club Aluminum Products Company, a new and expensive type of cookware was being sold with rapidly declining success by door-to-door salesmen using high-pressure tactics. Although Taylor instituted additional measures, such as establishing distribution channels through retail stores and offering free trials and affordable payment plans, he came to believe that applying his test to Clubs advertising and sales methods was the key factor that led to the companys remarkable return to profitability. Before implementing the test as a company policy, Taylor consulted four managers a Roman Catholic, a Christian Scientist, an Orthodox Jew, and a Presbyterian to make sure nothing in it conflicted with their religious or moral beliefs. He came to see the test as useful beyond business, writing in his autobiography, Anyone who checks his thoughts, his words and deeds against The Four-Way Test before he expresses himself or takes action is almost certain to do the right thing. Around the time Taylor was lecturing manufacturers about ethics, an RI Board member asked for, and received, his permission for Rotary to use The Four-Way Test to promote high ethical standards. By 1954, when he became RI president and formally presented the organization with the copyright of the 24 words, the test was already in wide use around the world. On the occasion of Rotarys golden anniversary, the test traveled with the Taylors as they promoted goodwill and friendship in 38 countries and earned plaudits from Newsweek , which saluted the organization for having broken through the barriers of race, religion and language as government and church have seldom been able to do. In the 54 years since Taylor graced the cover of Newsweek magazine as president of Rotary International during its 50th anniversary year, The Four-Way Test is still front and center in Rotary circles, with most club members reciting it before meetings and applying it to personal and professional challenges. But in the midst of another economic crisis and a period marked by corporate greed and scandal, this seems an appropriate time to renew acquaintances with one of the key figures in the history of Rotary. It will be available for all high school graduates who can not go to college. This is to inform you that we had a very successful tree planting at Norzagaray, Bulacan last September 12, 2009. RTNs. Baby Lorenzo, Lowell Custodio and I escorted the twenty (20) Interact members. It was such a memorable event. Despite the rain and mud all over the place, we were able to trek the mountain and planted the trees assigned to us. The teens enjoyed the tree planting activity. Last September 15, 2009, PE Lydia and I attended the MOA-signing for our Milk Feeding Program. Subsequently, last September 17, 2009, PE Lydia, Neneng, Ric, Dr. Bong and I attended the launching of our milk project at the Dona Juana Elementary School. We had only milk tasting with bread, because the DVF Farm cannot deliver yet the allotted milk. Late in the afternoon, I attended the Orientation Meeting for the Milk Program held at the Rotary Center. The Milk Feeding Program started last Tuesday, September 22, 2009. Preparations for the Governors Visit are now on going and I hope all hands will be able to help to make the visit a very informative and rewarding one. Its my pleasure and honor to welcome Dr. Bong to Rotary Club of Holy Spirit. His joining us will be a great help in our quest for solutions to make the people whose lives is our concern realize their dream of a better world. May I reiterate the invitation of Elite Business School of Science and Tech. Inc. to send beneficiaries for the PGMA Scholarship Program on Computer Programming and Consumer Electronics. Two classes started last Sept. 14, 2009. Another batch for 50 students will start on October 5, 2009. Reject everything that is not useful, amusing or beautiful. Remember well, that we have no control over what happens to us, but only on what we do.

Early Monday AM, Sept 28, 2009, club officers & members turned over to Barangay officials the first batch of relief goods for victims of Typhoon Ondoy that RCHS had hurriedly raised from members one day after the disaster. Then, RCHS, with Resource Mobilization Committee Chair IPP Cong Dodgie Osabel at the forefront, launched a campaign to solicit more donations from friends and business establishments to alleviate suffering of some of the estimated 2,000 badly affected families in Barangay Holy Spirit, and possibly of those in Bagong Silangan and other areas. Twelve RCHS Rotarians were present at the event, with Rtn Henry Asistin of RC Metro Cubao as one of the guests. .

The past four days were unforgettable days for us Filipinos. Typhoon Ondoy really devastated many parts of Luzon particularly Metro Manila. Our members immediately put their efforts to give and solicit donations and prepare relief goods for distribution. RCHS officers and members decided to postpone our most awaited affair, the Governors Visit & Induction Rites scheduled last September 30, 2009, in deference to the sad atmosphere brought about by Ondoy, and to permit the club and Club Presidents in District 3780, to focus on relief efforts for typhoon victims in our respective areas. I wish to thank all our members for proving to our community that we are a group of people whose motto is SERVICE ABOVE SELF. Even the RI District 3780 immediately called a meeting and prepared to distribute relief goods for Barangays Bagong Silangan, North Fairview, and Nagkaisang Nayon. The distribution was done last September 30, 2009 and they are preparing another wave of distribution and medical mission for the other barangays affected by typhoon Ondoy. For those families who lost their love ones, let me offer this phrase: May the stars carry your sadness away/May the flowers fill your heart with beauty. May hope forever wipe away your tears and above all, may silence make you strong.

RCHS & Barangay officials distribute relief goods for Ondoy victims
As Bgy Holy Spirit continued relief operations for affected constituents, RCHS turned over last Oct 1 additional donations of food stuff and assisted in re-packing of relief items. These were later distributed to 260 affected families in Kasiyahan (Pridakas area) through community leaders. Rtn Bgy Chairman Neneng Valmocina was assisted by RCHS Pres Linda & Marcia Salvador and by local leaders.

We were forewarned that typhoon Pepeng would be strong and dangerous. But thank God, Metro Manila and much of Luzon were spared from the worst. Meantime, relief assistance continue to come in from our generous brothers for the victims of Typhoon Ondoy. Let me take this opportunity to thank the following early donors: 1. The Federation of Korean Industries in the Philippines (QC district), of which Rtn Dr Bong is Director, donated 100 cartons of noodles for victims in Bgy Holy Spirit. 2. Even our brother in San Francisco, Mr. Ramon Bunag sent his donation of $200, thru Rtn Ped Condeno. 3. IPP Dodgie Osabel for donating P5,000 4. Rtn Ped Condeno for donating P1,000. and 5. Rtn Lyndon Lee for immediately responding by donating cash of P5,000 and two boxes of clothes and to top it all, he even added one sack of rice, 1 carton of sardines, 1 carton of meat loaf and 1 carton of corned beef. 6. Rtn Dr Bong for donating two sacks of rice 7. Rotarians like Marcia Salvador & Kent Valderrama who donated packages of clothes Contributions from others shall soon be acknowledged. Likewise, relief goods continued to flow to the Rotary District office which will be distributed in some other areas affected by typhoon Ondoy. Columnist Ramon J. Farolan gave the following advice. We benefit more from our failures than from our successes; that crises teach us more important lessons than we can possibly learn from books and classrooms. As someone put it, Success and happiness give out great feelings but it is affliction that enlightens and prepares us best for the future.

Governors Visit and fellowship rites to be held on December 3, 2009

The much-awaited visit of RI District 3780 Governor Dulce de Borja Coyukiat has been confirmed for December 3, 2009, a Thursday, at 4:00 PM. Venue shall be at the DAHHA Clubhouse in Don Antonio Heights Subd., Bgy Holy Spirit, Quezon City. The event, along with the induction rites, had been postponed from Sept 30, 2009 in deference to the relief operations for typhoon victims that included 1,300 families in the Clubs host community.

RCHS proposes health protection project for school children

The Rotary Club of Holy Spirit has completed the plans for a health protection project for pupils of the Dona Juana Elementary School, the public school where RCHS is currently implementing a milk-feeding program for malnourished children. The project will involve constructing two communal comfort rooms with ten toilets for boys & girls, and a hand washing area supplied with clean tap water. The project will be presented for funding support from organizations who share the Clubs commitment to help prepare children for future challenges. Based on the design prepared by PN Ped Condeno, CE, the proposed health-protection project would cost about PhP 560,000 or US$12,000.

PRESIDENTS CORNER Linda C. Palattao I came across a message of a Korean to the Filipinos and I think its worth sharing it to others.
Filipinos always complain about corruption in the Philippines. Do you really think that corruption is the problem of the Philippines. I dont think so. I strongly believe that the problem is the lack of love for the Philippines. After the Korean War, South Korea was one of the poorest countries in the world. Koreans had to start from scratch because entire country was destroyed and we had no natural resources. Koreans used to talk about the Philippines, for Filipinos were very rich in Asia. We envy Filipinos. Koreans really wanted to be well off like Filipinos. Korean government was very corrupt and is still very corrupt beyond your imagination, Economic situation was so bad and it had only three factories. So Pres. Park sent many mine workers and nurses to Germany so that they could send money to Korea to build factories. They had to go through horrible experience. Pres. Park had to beg Germany to lend them some money to rebuild Korea. He always asked Koreans to love their country from their heart. Many Korean scientists and engineers in the USA came back to Korea to help develop their country, and even if they had to receive very small salary, they did their best for Korea. They always hoped that their children would live in a well off country. Now, look at where Korea is in terms of progress. I am sure that love is the keyword which Filipinos should remember. We cannot change the sinful structure at once. Love must start in everybody, in a small scale and have to grow. A lot of things happen if we open up to love. Let's put away our prejudices and look at our worries with our new eyes. I discover that every person is worthy to be loved. Trust in love, because it makes changes possible. Love changes you and me. It changes people, contexts and relationships. It changes the world. Please love your neighborhood and country." Child protection an area of concern for RCHS

Alarmed over a reported case of violence against a child in Barangay Holy Spirit that had resulted in the childs death, RCHS invited to its regular meeting last October 15, 2009 a social worker with extensive experience in looking after the welfare of abused minors. Ms Divine O Nobis, Program Coordinator for the Salvato- Ms Divine Nobis speaks before Rotarians on rian Pastoral Care for Children child protection against abuse (SPCC) based at the St Peter Parish, talked lengthily about existing laws protecting the rights of minors and the role of government agencies like the DSWD as well as NGOs like the SPCC in implementing such laws. Ms Nobis presently works closely with the Holy Spirit Barangay Chair Rtn Neneng Valmocina on cases of child abuse. RCHS, for its part, is committed to the protection of childrens rights and will work with the concerned agencies and organizations as necessary. During the meeting, a proposed project involving mentoring assistance to graduating elementary pupils who are non-readers was brought up. This project will be discussed with Interact officers. These initiatives support the broader effort of RCHS to help prepare children to meet future challenges.

Induction rites for new RCHS members and Interact Club officers scheduled on October 29, 2009
The induction of new members of RCHS will be held on Thursday, October 29, 2009 at the Inner Wheel Club building at the barangay complex. Charging the new members will be PDG Danny Fausto, while Asst Gov Chito Borromeo will administer the oath of office. The officers of Interact will also be inducted at that time. We urge all to be present at this important occasion.

The past week was a very busy one for me, Ped and Ric because of the preparation needed for the Project Fair of the District. Thanks to my partners and we were able to beat the deadline. I hope that our proposed project of constructing additional toilets and wash areas for the 7,000 students of Dona Juana Elementary School will find a sister club that will help us finance the project during the project fair and zone institute in November. I am happy to inform the club that Rotary Club of Greenmeadows has offered to share with us their Feeding Program for Grade I/Pre-school pupils. Also, the RC Agham would like to share us their project of preventing tuberculosis among children. Lets hope that the approaching Typhoon Ramil will not bring havoc and cause damage to lives and property as what Typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng has done to our country. I have a prayer for our countrymen affected by typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng: I pray for fellow Filipinos, whose lives suffered the wrath of the last two typhoons. Please grant us courage to face the long road to recovery; give us enough grace to accept Your will despite our huge losses; sustain us with Your love that will protect us from further harm and guide us, that the way to You remains, despite the sadness and desperation that surround us. The disaster destroyed our possession, took so many precious lives and has now created a serious challenge for my home country to overcome.but nothing can ever take away, nor ever destroy our faith. Where there is faith, there is hope. We entrust ourselves into Your hands, Lord. Amen.

Last Monday, October 26, 2009, President Linda and Treasurer Marcia turned over books and bags for the students of Holy Spirit National High School, where our INTERACT Club officers and members are all enrolled. This public school, located in the Clubs host community, has a student population of 4,500. The books and bags were donated by SM Foundation Inc, a partner organization of RCHS, and were received by INTERACT Adviser, Mr Nelson Francisco, in behalf of Ms Zaida Padullo, the school principal.

Several weeks earlier, the first half of the books from SM Foundation was turned over to the principal, Ms Emely M Pelobello, and faculty of the Dona Juana Elementary School where RCHS is currently implementing a milkfeeding program for malnourished Grade I pupils. Eui Bong Jung is certified acupuncturist and doctor of oriental medicine., by Phil Institute of Traditional & Alternative Healthcare of DOH. Last Oct 26th, RCHS Treasurer Marcia and Pres Linda handed over to Interact one of four bundles of old newspapers, in support of the drive to raise funds for Interact service projects. We urge all RCHS members to help in this fundraising activity by donating old newspapers. During that occasion, President Linda also gave out some T-shirts as tokens for Interact officers and members. Interact officers attend leadership training Four INTERACT officers led by Pres Joe Allen Mendoza attended a leadership training seminar last October 24, 2009 to help them prepare for their roles as club leaders. The seminar was hosted by RC Bagong Silangan, with RCHS and several others as co-hosts. The attendees found the seminar both informative and enjoyable. It gave them a chance to expand friendships with Interactors from other schools. They particularly enjoyed the insights given by PP Louie Pagulayan of RC SFDM.

The induction of new RCHS members and Interact officers was timed with the clubs fellowship night last October 29, 2009 at the Innerwheel Club Bldg in the barangay complex. Our colleagues Engr Joe del Rosario and Dr Eui Bong Jung came with their spouses, Dr Naty and Jenny, respectively. They were charged and formally inducted into membership by PDG Danny Fausto. The Interact officers, led by President Joe Allen Mendoza, were sworn into office by AG Edmund Chiu. The Interactors were accompanied by their adviser, Mr Nelson Francisco. The delectable food was catered by Pepetons. The ensuing fellowship was started by CP Nides Respicio rendering a lovely tune with his harmonica. Meanwhile, the Interactors showed their talent in dancing, singing, and declaiming, all done impromptu. Everybody was delighted to see President Linda Palattao dance the swing with PDG Danny. Even Kgds Lowell Custodio and Baby Lorenzo gamely danced the cha-cha, with CP Nides providing the music. It was truly a night of fellowship and fun! REMINDER: The first Project Fair Philippines of RI will be held on Nov. 26, 2009 at the Dusit Hotel in Makati. We have a proposed project to be presented at the Fair. Lets all support the Fair and our participation!

The month of November has been declared as Punctuality Month. Filipino time is no longer a joke it is a reality especially in the government. Punctuality means being on time for an appointment, a meeting or an organized activity. Being punctual connotes respect and consideration for others who have set aside much of their valuable time to accommodate discussions of mutual concerns. The common excuse these days for tardiness is the unpredictable traffic that we experience in Metro Manila. But this is not a valid excuse. It is better to be a bit early than to have to come up with all kinds of lame excuses for being late. Punctuality also implies promptness not waiting for the last hour to carry out responsibilities or obligations. Punctuality is also a form of discipline, and one way of inculcating discipline in a society is leading by example. We, as Rotarians, should be the leaders in showing everybody that Filipino time is On Time. We should change the old notion that Filipinos are always late. Late for meetings, work, and in starting our activities. We could do more if only we know how to manage our time and if we start on time. Let me take this opportunity to thank PDG Danny Fausto and AG Edmund Chiu for taking time out to attend our fellowship meeting last October 29, 2009. And also to our Treasurer, Marcia Salvador, for painstakingly preparing the details of the occasion that made the event a success. As we grow older, beauty simply travels from the face to the heart, appeal to charm, former ambitions to true calling, past hurts to wisdom, and great moments to lifelong memories.

Our Interact officers have been actively joining the activities of the District Interact. A forthcoming activity is the Project: May Bukas Pa on November 21, 2009 at the Philippine Childrens Medical Center where the Interactors will present a puppet show to entertain cancer-stricken children at the hospital. This is a joint project of the Rotary and Interact clubs. Lets do our share by preparing small tokens like toys or baskets of goodies for distribution by our Interactors to the children.

In the Gospel (Mark 12,33-44) of last Sunday , Jesus warns about doing good works for the sake of public image or personal gain. As Rotarians, we must learn to give from the heart and with no strings attached and to give generously and anonymously. Some of the happiest people are those who are generous. On the other hand, some of the most miserable people are those who are selfish and calculating. There is really joy in giving and selfish people, sad to say never get to experience it. All the people whom we respect and honor now, are those who gave something or someone for the greater value than themselves. A rose is a thorn that opens up. Every thorn is a potential rose. As long as, we do not forgive, we do not forget any dark area in our lives, there is a thorn. Let us take the risk of opening up and reaching out so that as we journey on, we will be carrying more roses than thorns. Christmas is fast approaching; we must think of the children whose dream of Santa Claus coming to their homes will become a reality. So lets do something good without anybody knowing it. Do generously and anonymously, and you will experience a kind of joy that the world cannot give nor take away. It is better to give than to receive

Rtn Kent is Vice Chair of Business Solutions Asia, Director of Global Procure-It Corporation, a consultancy in supply chain management, and teaches at the Ateneo Business School. The following article has been written by Rtn Kent for this weekly bulletin.
Servant Leadership
Servant Leadership is one of the most popular leadership models today. This maybe a good model for all Rotarians to follow considering our passion to serve and lead for the betterment of society. This concept is not new. It was developed by Robert K. Greenfield in 1970. The basic concept is that the servant leaders become an end in themselves rather than a means to an organizational purpose or bottom-line. Servant leaders devote themselves to serving the needs of organization members. They focus on meeting the needs of those they lead. They develop employees to bring out the best in them. They coach others and encourage their self expression. They facilitate personal growth in all who work with them and lastly they listen and build a sense of community. For many, the term SERVANT with its slave like connotation is problematic and misleading. Advocates of servant leadership emphasize two factors, serving employees and being selfless. Serving employees means looking after the needs of the employees to the point that they reach their full potential thereby they are able to perform at their best. Being selfless means the leader is willing to risk his or her own fate in order to do what is right. These are the traits of real leadership . Kent Valderrama

The Interact officers called an assembly meeting last Saturday, November 14, 2009 at the Holy Spirit National High School. Purpose of the assembly was to introduce Interact and its objectives and programs in order to invite potential members from the student population. The meeting was attended by students from all levels. Also present were RCHS President Linda and Treasurer Marcia. Interact President Joe Allen Mendoza discussed the clubs first proposed project, i.e, mentoring assistance to graduating elementary pupils at the Dona Juana Elementary School who are experiencing difficulty in their reading ability .The attendees were enthusiastic about the project.

Gov Dulces Birthday

District 3780 will hold a blood-letting event tomorrow, November 20, 2009, the eve of Gov Dulces birthday (Nov 21st). Dubbed Gift of Life Project in partnership with the Philippine National Red Cross, it will be held at the covered walk of Quezon City hall from 8am to 5pm. Together with RC Kagitingang Cubao and RC New Manila Heights, Gov Dulce invites everyone to join this meaningful birthday event. The club that can bring in the biggest number of blood donors will be acknowledged by Gov Dulce for being the bloodiest club. Give blood on Dulces day and help save a life!

Along with nine (9) other rotary clubs, RCHS will co-host an inter-city meeting on Monday, November 23, 2009 at the Shangrila Bistro Restaurant in Eastwood City. Guest speaker will be Dr Luz P Corpus who will speak on Nutrition and Hunger. During the meeting, the Memorandum of Understanding on the Feeding Program (sponsored by RC Greenmeadows and shared with other rotary clubs) will be signed. Registration starts at 6:30pm. RCHS co-hosts inter-city meeting with nine other clubs

To formally launch a collaborative service project for malnourished children, an intercity meeting was held last November 23, 2009 at the Shanghai Bistro Restaurant in Eastwood City, Bagumbayan, QC. Lead host was RC Greenmeadows led by its President, Romy Sangalang, who is generously sharing with 9 other Rotary clubs (RCHS included) the proceeds of a grant from the SSS to fund a differentiated feeding program. Guest speaker during the meeting was Dr Luz P Corpus, a noted pediatrician, who spoke on HUNGER: ITS IMPACT ON CHILD HEALTH. Dr Corpus provided the attendees an in-depth insight on malnutrition and how this can be addressed by the government and civic organizations like the Rotary. District 3780 Chairman for Service Projects PP Anton Sayo of RC Greenmeadows, himself an expert in managing communitybased programs, expounded on the highlights of the feeding program. Together with RCHS, the following clubs also co-hosted the meeting: RC Cubao EDSA, RC Midtown Cubao, RC Paraiso, RC Roosevelt, RC San Bartolome, RC Talipapa, RC Up town Novaliches and RC West Triangle. The presidents of the ten (10) clubs toasted to friendship and collaboration on the humanitarian project. It was indeed an opportunity for fellowship with Rotarians of other clubs as attendees enjoyed a sumptuous Chinese lauriat. Led by RCHS President Linda, also present during the meeting were PE Lyds, PP Roger, Sec Joy, Rtn Dr Bong and Rtn Ric. PN Ped introduced the guest speaker while Night Chairman was Treas Marcia.

Interact project on December 5th, 2009

Our Interact officers are all set for another Interact District activity on Saturday, December 5, 2009 from 9 AM to 12 noon where, together with twelve (12) other Interact clubs, they will hold a program dubbed May Bukas Pa for the benefit of 50 cancer-stricken patients at the Philippine Childrens Medical Center. A joint project of the Rotary clubs and Interact clubs, the event will be hosted by RC Bagong Silangan. PP Dr Roger, Treas Marcia and Rtn Ric have prepared Christmas packages which will be distributed by our Interactors to the patients towards the end of the program that day. Rtns Kgd Baby and Kgd Lowell will accompany our Interactors.

It is with great pride that we welcome you tonight in our celebration of the Governors visit to our club. Tonight we pay tribute to our club members past and present who have made this club what it is today. Last November 23, 2009 we had our intercity meeting with nine other clubs of the district at the Shanghai Bistro Restaurant. Our Guest Speaker, Dra. Luz Corpus gave us a very enlightening speech on the effects of hunger on children. As a tribute to Governor Dulces birthday, we participated in the bloodletting at the Quezon City Hall last November 20, 2009. Sometimes its good to believe in ones self. But there are circumstances when we really need to have a good look as to how far we can really go. We do have physical limitations and unless we accept the fact, we may be blinded as regards our conclusion why things happen. Sometimes we tend to give the excuse that we do not have the time, so we are not able to attend the meetings or do the work assigned to us. As Rotarians we have committed to attend the weekly meeting religiously in order that we will be able to discuss our work, report what we have done and promote friendship with fellow Rotarians in our club. The solution to this problem is that we must have time management ability to be able to do our work on time and have free time to attend our meetings. I would like to thank Ped Condeno our Chairman for Club Administration, and Ric Salvador our Chaiman of Membership Committee for having painstakingly prepared the powerpoint presentation for the Governors Visit today. Lets not forget that we have committed ourselves to help the people whose lives are our concern and to help them realize their dream of a better world, because their future is in our hands.
Blood-letting on Gov Dulces birthday

The eve of Gov Dulces birthday was meaningfully celebrated with a blood-letting activity last November 20, 2009 at the covered walk of Quezon City hall. PE Lyds brought with her 12 willing and qualified donors. Many others, from all walks of life, came to give of themselves with the hope of saving lives. As PE Lyds said, Its amazing how people are now aware of the beauty of sharing and saving lives through blood-letting. Years back, only men in uniform donated blood more as a duty than as a noble mission. RC Kagitingang Cubao and RC New Manila Heights led clubs in D 3780 in organizing the activity in partnership with the Philippine National Red Cross. The blood-letting campaign yielded more than 100 units of blood. During the event, a Memorandum of Agreement was signed between PNRC and Rotary for a year-long blood-letting program. Also, seedlings were turned over for a tree-planting program in honor of DG Dulce.
Gift-giving for kids on December 12th

RC of Holy Spirit will again spearhead this years gift-giving event to bring cheers to up to 500 children of less fortunate families in the community. The program shall be held at the DAHHA Park Complex on Saturday, December 12 at i:00 PM. With DAHHA as host, the other partners in this project for children are the SM Foundation, the Barangay Council of Holy Spirit, and other volunteer organizations. Please help imbibe Christmas joy among children mostly between the ages of 7 and 12 by sending toys worth P 50 each to the RCHS office in the Multipurpose Hall of St. Benedict Parish.

May Bukas Pa Project held last December 5th for cancer-stricken children
Officers of our Interact Club from the Holy Spirit National High School joined clubs from nine other high schools in District 3780 last Saturday, December 5th, in a program dubbed May Bukas Pa for the benefit of 50 cancer-stricken children at the Philippine Childrens Medical Center. The event was hosted by the Rotary Club of Bagong Silangan. The program to cheer up the sick children included song and dance presentations, a puppet show, magicians acts, a visit by Jollibee mascot, a testimonial talk from a cancer survivor and his parent, and encouragement and prayers from District Governor Dulce and other personalities who graced the occasion. PP Roger, Treas Marcia and Rtn Ric prepared Christmas packages which were distributed by our Interactors during the gift-giving portion of the program. Kgds Baby and Lowell escorted them. Pres Linda and Rtn Ric were there, too.

RCHS is all set for the gift-giving project dubbed Make a Child Happy on Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 1pm at the DAHHA Park Complex. In partnership with the SM Foundation Inc, the Barangay Council of Holy Spirit and the Don Antonio Heights Homeowners Inc, RCHS is spearheading the project to bring joy and cheers to some 500children from less fortunate families in the community. For a man best known as the father of The Rotary Foundation, Arch C. Klumph was modest about his role in its creation. Instead, he emphasized his role in writing Rotary's constitution in 1915, which he asserted "gave Rotary International its first centralized power and made all the Objects and fundamentals of Rotary universal." .He was elected Rotary's sixth president in 1916, five years after he became a Rotarian. At the 1917 international convention in Atlanta, Klumph reminded Rotarians that "Rotary is entering a new era, demanding improved methods in administrative machinery, with which to carry out the splendid principles which have been laid down heretofore." He defined points of action, including an endowment, which would later become The Rotary Foundation: Carrying on, as we are, a miscellaneous community service, it seems eminently proper that we should accept endowments for the purpose of doing good in the world, in charitable, educational or other avenues of community progress, or such funds could be well used for extension work." By 1928, when the RI Bylaws were amended to change the name to The Rotary Foundation, the endowment fund had grown to over $5,000.
We encourage RCHS members to think of questions for PDG Danny Espinosa when he speaks before us in January 2010 about The Rotary Foundation. To provoke enlightened discussion, let us pose our queries as dilemma situations. Some of the questions that we have been raising among ourselves whenever the topic of TRF arises include: How do we ensure that the drive to raise $1,000 Paul Harris contribution from members succeeds yet not become a barrier to attracting new members & keeping existing ones? Given the limited resources of a small club, how could we grow the extent of humanitarian service to our local community and at the same time contribute to the TRF spending for international grants? How do we encourage truly voluntary contributions from members without giving the impression that the club is under pressure to produce TRF contributions to meet quota set by RI in order to help offset TRF investment losses last year? Last November, the RI Board has decided that the revised strategic plan effective July 2010 will encompass three priorities of equal importance to Rotarys future, namely: Support & strengthen clubs; focus & increase humanitarian service; and enhance public image & awareness. How will TRF sit in this back-to-basics strategy?

The Governors Visit and Induction last December 3, 2009 was a success. We were able to show Gov. Dulce and other District officers that our club is very much alive and is doing well . She was happy to know that we have already accomplished 90% of the projects we have planned and resolved to implement for the Rotary Year 2009-2010. I would like to thank again all the officers and members of our club for making this possible. For our interactors, thank you for your contributions to our program. Lets also congratulate IPP Dodgie Osabel for receiving a Presidential Award for his outstanding performance as our President last year and CP Leonides Respicio for being appointed as member of the Legislative Assembly of the District. The District will be holding a Christmas Party on December 11, 2009 at the Camp Crame, Cubao, Quezon City. It is dubbed White Christmas . We are all invited to attend this district affair. On January 9, 2010 there will be a District Legislative Assembly meeting at the Rotary Center from 1-5 PM. Our representative for this assembly is CP Nides Respicio. We could still be exempted from the Mid-year review if we will be able to comply with the per capita requirement of contribution to the TRF. Congratulations is due to Doc. Roger Belleza for pledging to be a Paul Harris + 1 for this Rotary Year. In all our meetings, we always implore the Almighty God to bless and inspire us, so that what we say, think and do will be in accordance with His will. To strengthen our spirit and enlighten our minds so that we can be effective channels of wisdom, justice and peace. These wishes are summarized in the Four Way Test and Rotarys undying commitment to humanity: SERVICE ABOVE SELF. Christmas is fast approaching. It is in this spirit of Christmas that we should do more for the people whose lives are our concern and help them realize their dream of a better world.

RC Holy Spirit, SM Foundation and partners join hands to cheer up poor children
Last December 12, 2009, the covered court of Don Antonio Heights was the site of a big Christmas gift-giving event for some 850 children from less fortunate families in the community. The project, dubbed Make a Child Happy, was spearheaded by the Rotary Club of Holy Spirit in cooperation with SM Foundation, Holy Spirit Barangay Council and Don Antonio Heights Homeowners Association. Toys and loot bags were donated by SM Foundation, the Rotary Club of Holy Spirit, as well as by Rotarian Councilor Candy Medina, Councilor Toto Medalla and daughter Aly, Ms Glenda Garcia and Ms Ara Mina who all came to personally distribute the goodies. Everyone was thrilled when Ms Ara Mina rendered a song a capella. DAHHA Director Isabel Kim also donated toys. Barangay Chair Neneng Valmocina came with grocery items. Councilor Medina also provided 4 vats of lugaw that fed the children and their companions, together with 2 clowns dressed in Santa Claus garbs who entertained the children. Games were played through the able and patient supervision of Mr Bob Navida of SM Foundation. Indeed, it was an auspicious event that made both children & donors happy, especially with a number of attractive personalities livening up the occasion.

First MEDICAL-DENTAL-DIAGNOSTIC MISSION for 2010. RC Holy Spirit will once again be a lead partner with SM Foundation, the Parish Pastoral Council of St Benedict, and DAHHA in a large-scale Medical, Dental & Diagnostic Mission on Feb 13, 2010 where 1,500 patients are expected to be served from 8 AM to 4 PM, at the DAHHA covered court. Please invite doctors, dentists, nurses & other medical practitioners to volunteer for this project, and advice PP Dr Roger Belleza accordingly.
RCHS launches nutri-food feeding program to help grow healthier children
Last Dec 14th RCHS launched the nutri-food program for 50 Grade I pupils of Dona Juana Elementary School, a public school in the Clubs host community. The daily feeding program for kids will last until the end of the school year in March 2010. This service project is made possible with the support provided by RC Greenmeadows. The parallel milk-feeding program of RCHS for an earlier batch of 50 pupils in the school was then about to complete its 100-day duration. This milk-feeding project has been implemented with support from RC New Manila East.

Ms. Becky Nazareno, President of RC San Mateo California, shared her experience and gave RCHS officers practical advice on how to gain funding for Club projects. She introduced us to the District Simplified Grant that we could access for our proposed hand washing facility project, and promised to assist us in obtaining assistance from the other Rotary clubs in her district. Let me begin by saying that I believe donating to the less fortunate during the holiday season is a good thing. Our Make a Child Happy project held at the covered court of Don Antonio Heights was a success. We were able to make some 850 children happy last December 12, 2009. Thank you very much to our sponsor, the SM Foundation Inc headed by Mr Bob Navida, for providing 200 toys and goodies for the children, and for RCHS Rotarians for providing over 300 toys for the occasion. We also thank Rtn Councilor Candy Medina, the Board of Directors of DAHHA (Don Antonio Heights Homeowners Association), the St Benedict Pastoral Council, Aly Medalla, Glenda Garcia, Ara Mina, Alfred Vargas, and Bgy Chairman Neneng Valmocina and for their presence and donations of toys. Thanks also to PP Dr Roger Belleza who solicited the help of SM Foundation. To my fellow Rotarians who donated cash and toys, thank you. We continued our gift-giving last December 23, 2009 at Payatas by giving Noche Buena packages to 110 families, and toys and presents to 78 children. We would like to thank the Buklod ng Panginoon group headed by Dr Luz Corpus for providing the Noche Buena packages. It was gratifying to note that the childrens parents who are members of our Saturday Feeding project must have learned the value of sharing that they decided to have a pot luck party last December 23. They provided lunch for the people who attended the gift-giving event. A story is told about a flight stewardess who informed an old lady that the ladies room was located at the front of the aircraft. She obediently followed the directions and too literally that she walked all the way up to the front, opened the cockpit door, and saw the crew at the controls. She closed the door immediately, returned to the aisle confused, and told the stewardess: Im not going in there. There are four men in the ladies room watching television!

RC Holy Spirit prepares for large-scale medicaldental-diagnostic mission on February 13th

PP Dr Roger Belleza, a veteran of medical-dental missions, is once again on top of a major medical-dental-diagnostic mission that will be held on Saturday, February 13, 2010 at the multi-purpose covered court of Don Antonio Heights. The mission, called Gamot Para sa Kapwa, is a joint partnership project of RCHS with the SM Foundation Inc, Don Antonio Heights Homeowners Association (DAHHA) and the St Benedicts Parish Pastoral Council (SBPPC). Dr Belleza solicited the help of SM Foundation to provide all the needed medicines, medical supplies & equipment, mobile x-ray and ECG van, as well as manpower to handle the diagnostic services and pharmacy for an estimated 1,500 patients from within the Clubs host community, Barangay Holy Spirit. For its part, RCHS has started recruiting volunteer doctors/dentists and nurses and is presently still continuing recruitment efforts to complete a complement of 45-50 medical & dental practitioners to service the patients. RCHS has also committed to provide the needed food (breakfast, lunch, am & pm snacks ad drinks) for the organizers and volunteers. We invite monetary contributions from fellow Rotarians and friends for the food requirements of about 150 persons. A coordination meeting was held last January 9, 2010 with the DAHHA and SBPPC to discuss responsibility assignments and logistical requirements. PP Dr Belleza and Treas Marcia attended that meeting. The next one will include SM Foundation personnel to orient the volunteers.

Though we have accomplished all the projects we have planned and resolved to implement for Rotary Year 20092010, we could not sit and relax because there are so many people whose lives are our concern and so we will now embark on a very big project, Gamot Para Sa Kapwa, scheduled for February 13, 2010. Our partners, the SM Foundation, the Pastoral Council of St.Benedict and the Don Antonio Heights. Homeowners Association, will be with us in this new venture. I would like to thank PDG Danny Fausto for gracing our first meeting for 2010 last week. It is my pleasure to announce that RTN Jose Del Rosario has scheduled a team building seminar on January 23, 2010, from 8:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. at the St. Benedict Multi-purpose Building. The first half of Rotary Year 2009-2010 has been a very fruitful year for our Club because we have accomplished all our planned projects. Congratulations to all our officers and members who made it possible. Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away. PDG Danilo Dan Espinosa, District Governor during RI 2006-2007 and current District Rotary Foundation Chairman , spoke about the Rotary Foundation last January 7, 2010. PDG Dan presented to club members what TRF is all about, its historical roots, and how it serves as a platform for humanitarian grants, educational programs, and its trademark Polio-Plus program. Spending about US$120 M annually for these initiatives, TRF relies on annual giving from Rotarians (such as from sustaining TRF members & Paul Harris fellows) and giving to Rotarys permanent endowment fund by benefactors such as in the form of cash, bequests, income agreements and real estate. He emphasized that all Rotarians should help to sustain the noble goals of the Rotary Foundation.

Team-building seminar for Interact Club of Holy Spirit

Last January 23, 2010, twenty-seven officers & members of the Interact Club of RCHS participated in an intensive team-building seminar designed and conducted by Rtn Engr Jose del Rosario Jr at the Multi-purpose Building in St Benedict Parish. Through briefings, exercises and challenging assignments ably introduced and processed by Tito Joe, the junior & senior students from the Holy Spirit National High School quickly appreciated the value of teamwork and techniques for developing team spirit among members.

.RCHS is exempted from Districts Mid-year Review Our club is among 29 clubs in District 3780 which had been exempted from attending the mid-year review sessions at the Rotary Center on January 19-29. (There are 94 clubs in the district.) In addition to having paid SAR dues, magazine subscriptions, district governors fund & district disaster fund, and TRF target, RCHS has attained at least 10% increase in membership, completed at least one service project on health, hunger & literacy, and has submitted the Clubs mid-year report to the Assistant Governor in-charge.
Boy Abunda to Rotary Clubs: Let the public know of your accomplishments
Mr Boy Abunda, celebrity TV host, manager of public figures and PR expert was guest speaker during the Districts InterCity Meeting last January 21st at the Rotary Center. Among many points he covered, Mr Abunda suggested that rather than just working quietly Rotary Clubs should communicate their activities and projects to the general public as a means to enhance image and elicit more support for its humanitarian undertakings. Last January 20th, Rtn Bgy Chair Neneng Valmocina celebrated her birthday at the covered court of the barangay complex. Large Medical-Dental Mission is all set

All is set for the medical-dental-diagnostic mission on Saturday, February 13, 2010 from 8AM to 4PM at the multi-purpose covered court of Don Antonio Heights. Most of the needed volunteer doctors, dentists, nurses and aides have been recruited. As of January 18, 2010, a total of P43,000 has already been solicited by RC Holy Spirit mainly through the efforts of PP Dr Roger Belleza. The amount will be used for meals and snacks for about 150 organizers and volunteers. SM Foundation shall provide all the needed medicines, medical supplies & equipment, and personnel to handle diagnostic services and pharmacy. The following services will be available: tooth extraction, FBS screening, X-ray, ECG and medical consultations. There are only limited slots for FBS, x-ray, ECG and tooth extractions. If you have any patients who wish to avail of these free services, please advise them register early by calling Ms Joan at the DAHHA office (952-2715). This major service project is jointly sponsored by the SM Foundation, Don Antonio Heights Homeowners Association, St Benedicts Parish Pastoral Council, and the Rotary Club of Holy Spirit. We had a very successful TEAM BULDING SEMINAR last Saturday, January 23, 2010 at the St. Benedict Multipurpose bldg. Rtn. Jose Del Rosario conducted the seminar and Dra. Naty Del Rosario provided the snacks and lunch. For the generosity and concern of Spouses Joe & Naty Del Rosario, thank you very much. Twenty seven (27) Interactors attended the seminar and they all enjoyed and learned much from the seminar. For your information, we sponsored two of these Interactors to participate in the RYLA Training Camp at Tanay, Rizal. There will be a two-day District Mid-Year Review & Fellowship event among hands-on presidents and officers on January 30-31, 2010 at Subic, Zambales. Everybody is invited to participate. Rtn Atty Ferdinand Ed Valbuena was recently appointed Chief City Prosecutor of the Department of Justice in Caloocan City, besting 80 lawyers, fiscals, judges and city prosecutors who applied for the post. Rtn Ed took his oath of office before Justice Secretary Agnes Devanadera last January 25, 2010.
The milkfeeding program for 50 Grade 1 pupils which started on September 11, 2009 with the help of RC New Manila East officially ends on February 17, 2010, after 90 school days. The Nutrifoods feeding program through the assistance of RC Greenmeadows is on-going. A final orientation for volunteers to the February 13 Medical-Dental Mission will be held on February 12 to ensure a successful event.

Last weeks meeting was also our monthly fellowship. We had a very fruitful meeting. And we had fun singing and drinking wine. Club presidents had a very joyous cruise along Subic Bay last Jan. 30, 2010 courtesy of RC Cubao West. The District Mid Year Review & Fellowship at Subic was something to remember. Details for the up coming Gamot para sa Kapwa are now all in place. Thanks for the help of RTN Doc. Roger Belleza who never sleeps until everything is in order. We need more Rotarians like him so, start bringing in your recruits. We are expecting an influx of about 1,500 residents of Barangay Holy Spirit at the medical-dental mission on February 13th. Before then, an Anti-TB drive will be launched on February 8, 2010 at 9:00 A.M. at the Karlife compound. I would like to thank Dr. Manny Po of RC SFDM for donating the PPD medicines for the tuberculin test for the thirty (30) children suspected of tuberculosis. Night Chairman The 5th Rotarian to arrive New RI Strategic Plan Gets Back to Basics At its November 2009 meeting, the RI Board adopted a revised strategic plan that comprises three priorities, all of equal importance to Rotarys future. The priorities are: Support and strengthen clubs. Focus and increase humanitarian service. Enhance public image and awareness. Following a mandate from the Council on Legislation, the Board recently conducted a triennial review of the plan. This review included surveying 14,000 Rotarians worldwide about the organizations priorities and holding focus groups to assess Rotarys image in different countries. In addition, the Strategic Planning Committee carried out a detailed analysis of Rotarys strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges and considered its findings in relation to the organizations mission, vision, and strategic priorities. The revised plan, effective July 2010, reflects the results of this research. For example, survey responses clearly linked membership growth to strong clubs, and external data indicated that opportunities for service and networking are Rotarys greatest appeal. The plan also unifies the strategic direction of RI and The Rotary Foundation by emphasizing the connection between clubs most popular service areas and the areas of focus in the Foundations Future Vision Plan. Moving forward, the Strategic Planning Committee and the RI Board will continue to refine the goals attached to each priority and develop tactics for achieving and measuring success. The revised strategic plan focuses RIs efforts on the clubs and getting back to basics, says RI Director Thomas Thorfinnson. RIs main role should be supporting clubs and helping them to expand their service and publicize the accomplishments of their efforts. RI INTERNATIONAL NEWS

feeding program ends
After ninety (90) school days, the milk feeding program implemented by RCHS with the help of RC New Manila East ended yesterday, February 17, 2010. Fifty (50) Grade I malnourished pupils of the Dona Juana Elementary School in Barangay Holy Spirit benefited from the program. Initial results obtained from the teacher in-charge of the feeding program show a slight increase in the weights of some children who were chosen as beneficiaries. The complete report is expected to be released on Friday, February 19, 2010. One of the 50 happy pupil-beneficiaries is shown above.

Medical-dental mission draws big crowd

The medical-dental-diagnostic mission, called Gamot Para sa Kapwa, held on February 13, 2010 at the covered court of Don Antonio Heights drew patients from various areas within Barangay Holy Spirit as well as nearby communities. The mission was a partnership project of RCHS with SM Foundation Inc, Don Antonio Heights Homeowners Association (DAHHA) and the St Benedicts Parish Pastoral Council (SBPPC). A total of approximately 1,400 patients, mostly from depressed areas, availed of the free medical, dental and diagnostic services and medicines. The services included medical consultations, tooth extractions, ECG, X-ray, FBS, bone screening, and acupuncture. The acupuncture service was provided by no less than Rtn Dr Bong. PP Dr Roger Belleza, a veteran of medical-dental missions, spearheaded the conduct of this project. Through his relentless efforts, some 15 medical doctors, 8 dentists, 12 nurses, as well as paramedical staff came to offer the free services. SM Foundation provided all the needed medicines, medical supplies & equipment, mobile x-ray and ECG van. At Dr Bellezas invitation, Natrapharma representatives came to conduct FBS testing. The Philippine National Red Cross, through PE Dr Lyds Pedernal, sent a stand-by ambulance in case of any emergency. About 50 non-medical volunteers provided by the SBPPC, DAHHA and the barangay arrived to assist in the mission. Through funds solicited by RCHS, again at PP Dr Bellezas initiative, breakfast, snacks and lunch were served to about 170 volunteers and organizers. Mr Kim In Il, owner of the neighborhood Korean Grocery and a friend of Rtn Dr Bong, donated 2000 pandesals that were distributed to hungry patients waiting in line, as well as to some volunteers after the completion of the mission. Relaxing music to soothe frayed nerves of patients and to energize tired volunteers was provided by RCHS IPP Cong Dodgie Osabel of ALAGAD Party List.

Last February 8, 2010 we launched our Anti TB for Children Project. It was held at the Karlife compound along Holy Spirit Drive. RTNs present were Linda, Lydia, Nides, Ric, Marcia, and Dr.Bong. RTN Dra. Irene Santos of CTCP & RC Agham together with Dra. Velasco of the Barangay Health Center gave the tuberculin tests to 58 children. Of the 58 children and adults tested, only 13 came out positive; they were X-rayed last Saturday during the Gamot Para sa Kapwa. As our Valentines gift to the residents of Barangay Holy Spirit, we had a Medical and Dental Mission entitled Gamot para sa Kapwa which was held last Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010. There were about 1,400 medical and dental patients, including those that were tested for bone density and FBS (Blood Test for sugar) and treated with acupuncture procedures. Indeed our Medical and dental mission was a success, thanks for the help extended to us by our partners, SM Foundation, Inc., Don Antonio Heights Homeowners Association, St. Benedict Parish Pastoral Council, RC Marikina North, Capitol Medical Center Doctors, Sung Won Christian Community, and dental clinic of Dr. Yap. February 14th was Valentines day, the day of hearts. It is a day to remind us that matters of the heart still do matter. The harsh realities and pressures of modern life should not anesthetize nor make us cynical about love. And the good question to ask ourselves is; Is there enough love in my life? Are there people who really love me? Am I really loving other people aside from myself and my own family? In life, there are people who play safe, and there are those who dare; there are also people who no longer believe in change, and there are those who still care and dream. In order to succeed, we must first believe we can. And I am happy that I belong to a group of people who knows no boundaries and continue to work with zest and enthusiasm. Sister-club agreement with RC Marikina North (RI D-3800) broadens opportunity for service
Last February 18, 2010, RC Marikina North (RI District 3800) President Raul B. Catapang and RC Holy Spirit (RI District 3780) President Emelinda C. Palattao, and their respective witnesses, signed a Sisterhood Club Agreement between the two matched clubs. Both clubs recognize the sister-club relationship as an opportunity for service within the spirit of Rotary. The Agreement states that:
So far as appropriate, the clubs will endeavor to become actively involved in the community service and other projects initiated by the other, and to this end, undertakes to visit each other on an alternative or rotating basis. Each club will appoint at least one member with special responsibility for maintaining and developing this sister-club relationship.

D-3780 erected giant posters to remind Rotarians and encourage concerned citizens to join the kapit-bisig or human chain event on Saturday, Feb 27th around the Quezon Memorial Circle. RC Quezon City championed this event.
On Feb 24, 2010, RC New Manila Heights spear-headed the One-day Bloodletting event with support of other clubs in the District and the Red Cross Quezon City Chapter. Donors responded to the projects challenge to Give blood and save lives!
Did you know that longtime friend of Rotary -- the Boy Scouts - marked its 100th birthday on Feb 8th?
The two organizations have worked together since their early days. Rotary founder Paul Harris, after meeting with Chief Scout Executive James E. West in 1910, urged Rotarians to assist in the expansion of the Scouts. By 1930, Rotarians had organized more than half of the then 500 Boy Scout councils, and today Rotary clubs sponsor 1,483 Scout units for 45,528 youth. Rotary clubs have also contributed financially to Scout troops and helped construct Boy Scout camp buildings. Individual Rotarians have led the Scouts at local, district, and national levels. The fellowship counts RI President John Kenny and past presidents Wilf Wilkinson, Bill Boyd, and Cliff Dochterman among its members. Scouting is a great way for Rotary to grow itself into the future. Kenny said being a Boy Scout led him toward Rotary. The values of Scout Law, the Scout Oath, and The Four-Way Test are very similar, notes Al Kugler, director of the Office of the Chief Scout Executive. The Scout Oath is a promise that Scouts make to, among other things, help other people at all times. The Scouting movement began in Great Britain in 1907. Last week the tarpaulin for End Polio was unveiled at EDSA. We had a very successful AG/AGR seminar at Mimosa last weekend. Our incoming officers carefully prepared the seminar and the fellowship was memorable thanks to Dot Gancayco, incoming first lady of RI D-3780. February 22-28 is Rotary Week. We opened the week with an Intercity meeting with a World Peace and Understanding celebration at Johnsons Park, North Greenhills and will end it with the Human Chain activity at the Quezon City Memorial Circle. The Beatitudes spoken by Jesus Christ in the mount are powerful be-attitudes that should lead us to action for a better world. It should give us strength to fight injustice, falsehood, manipulation and evil in whatever form. The Sermon on the Mount should empower us to go down from the mountain and face our hard realities bravely. Filled with hope and consolation, we must go and spread this message to others too. Furthermore, the Beatitudes should lead us not only to accept but also to improve our situation. Today, as the Lenten season starts we must reflect on all the temptations you and I have encountered in this life. We must not be too engrossed with our selves that in the end we often leave out God and thus played God in our desire to be in control, but through what means and for what? It is sad to see the good ones who started with genuine and pure hearts but who in the course of time, could not resist the temptations and ended up on the road of convenience and compromise. We must always think that life is all about stewardship and not be drunk with earthly power and success. Let us be reminded that we are dust, and to dust we will return.

RC Holy Spirit commits to help in the anti-TB campaign

Last March 4th, RCHS signed the MOA with the Center for TB in Children Philippines (CTCP) and the Veterans Health Center regarding the sixmonth treatment of thirteen (13) children from the Karlife Compound in Barangay Holy Spirit. These children were earlier identified TB suspects with the assistance of the Health Committee of RI District 3780 headed by Dr Irene Santos of RC Agham. Under the MOA, the CTCP will provide technical assistance to the Veterans Health Center in implementing the Directly Observed Treatment In photo (L-R): CP Nides Respicio, President Linda Palattao, CTCP Chair Short Course (DOTS) to the TB-affected children. CTCP will also conduct health education programs to parents and health workers involved in the project. For its part, RCHS will provide funds for the X-ray of identified TB suspects, as well as honoraria for the health worker who will conduct the daily administration of medicines.

The Interact of Holy Spirit is formally organized! On March 4th, the officers of our very own Interact signed their clubs Articles of Incorporation and By-laws. After the signing, the officers and directors of Interact posed for posterity proudly with RCHS officers.

Did you know that Rotary is inextricably linked to toilets ?

In 1907, the Rotary Club of Chicago responded to a lack of public facilities by building a comfort station outside City Hall one of the first Rotary service projects. Rotarians minds are still in the toilet today. The Rotary Foundation has granted more than US$4.7 million for water and sanitation projects over the past five years. Clubs have provided water and sewer lines to a village in Peru, installed bathrooms with flush toilets in a school in Belize, and brought Ecosan waterless composting pit latrines to four boarding schools in southwestern Uganda, for examples. Many Rotarians rightly focus on the health benefits of toilets, particularly how they can help prevent diarrhea and disease. Together, projects that focus on water, sanitation, and hygiene will lessen the incidence of diarrhea in developing countries, Daniele Lantagne of the US Centers for Disease Control & Prevention says.

What about us? RC Holy Spirit has designed and proposed a health & sanitation project for Dona Juana Elementary School, a public school with 7,000 pupils mostly from poor families. The project will involve constructing two additional communal comfort rooms with ten toilets for boys & girls, and a hand washing area with clean tap water. At present, the number of toilets is grossly inadequate, and there is no hand washing facility for students going to and coming out of the canteen.

We were very busy in last weeks celebration of the Rotary Week which was culminated by the Humanity in Motion Activity at the Quezon City Circle. Last meeting was highlighted by the MOA signing with the Center for Tuberculosis in Children Philippines and the awarding of the Certificate of Organization and signing of the Articles and By-Laws for the Interact Club of Holy Spirit. This weekend our PE Lydia Pedernal will attend the President Elect Training Seminar at the Fontana Resort, Clark Field Pampanga. With 18 projects already finished, our club has gone a long way in making our club known to the district as one who has the spirit, zest and enthusiasm to serve our adopted community by doing our best. Lets continue our efforts to do more in helping the people whose lives are our concern, to realize their dream of a better world. As our Governor once reminded us: There should be no let- up in your efforts to serve others. The more successful you are, the more committed you should be to change the lives of people in the communities your serve. That was your dream in the beginning. The DISCON 2010 was a complete success. Lets congratulate RC Timog the lead Host Club together with the other Host clubs for a job well done. You should have seen the Rigodon dance of the Hands on Presidents and District officers led by Governor Dulce DB Coyukiat. It was amazing how they were able to dance it beautifully despite the difficulties they had in assembling the 16 pairs needed for the dance. This weekend we will have our dog vaccination project. Everything is in place and we hope we will be able to give vaccines to the registered 400 dogs in our community, so that they will not be a threat to our health. I hope all the members will find time to participate in this very good project for our club. Its graduation time again. Congratulations to the students, parents and teachers for all their hard work sacrifices and efforts. Election is fast approaching. Let us not allow cheaters, operators and manipulators to kill our dreams for a better Philippines. We must not let evil and lust for power triumph. We must go out and vote and teach our people that they should not sell their votes because another six years of bad leadership will compound our national problems. As we go about our work, especially in our work in serving others, let us be careful not to give in to crowd mentality wherein we treat persons as commodities and do our work simply as functions or , much worse as obligations. No matter what, let us not lose the personal touch. May people know that who we are and what we do is all because of love.

Rotary has partnered with seven leading universities around the globe to host the Rotary Centers for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution. Each year, Rotary selects up to 100 Fellows to study peace and conflict resolution at universities around the world. Some of the program highlights include:
* A choice of either a three-month certificate course or master's degree program. * Training in the root causes of conflict, international relations, and effective models of cooperation, conflict resolution and negotiation. * Full funding for tuition, housing expenses, and airfare. * Access to a growing network of committed alumni employed around the world in diplomacy, government, non-governmental organizations and private corporations.
The master's level degree program is aimed at mid-career professionals in government, nongovernmental organizations and private corporations. The masters degree fellowship is available to non-Rotarians only. Dr Roger Belleza, Chair of RCHSs Solicitation Committee, was able to raise P39,000 from friends/donors in order to provide breakfast, snacks and lunch for about 50 organizers and volunteers. Before the Holy week, we had given 640 dogs in our community the much needed vaccines that will prevent them from spreading rabies among our residents. Thanks a lot to DAHHA directors Roger Belleza, Abe Floro & Roger Urbanes who spearheaded the project and thanks to all the Rotarians, Interactors and volunteers who participated in the project. We will concentrate now on our last project (Anti-TB for Children) for Rotary Year 2009-2010. Chairman Ped Condeno will set the date for the lay forum and monitor the daily medication of the patients. We will have our DISTAS on April 24, 2010 at Celebrity Sports Plaza and the Awards Night on May 31, 2010 at Marriot Hotel. I hope all the in-coming officers will be able to attend the DISTAS and everybody will find time to attend the Awards Night. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ has set us free and removed the darkness of our souls. Many of us go through life with so much fear and insecurities. That is the reason why so many people hold on to money, power and worldly pleasures believing that this will give them a secure future. Life is not measured in terms of quantity but in terms of quality. Easter is an invitation for us to go out from our tombs of lies , deceit and untruthfulness. We must always adhere to the Four-way test of the Rotary to be able to lead a peaceful , happy and blessed life. The Holy Week has given us a chance to experience the 3Rs: relax, reflect, recharge. I hope everybody will take time to experience this 3Rs all year round. HAPPY EASTER TO EVERYONE.!

Last April 16, an Inter-City Family Night featuring the Up With People Musical Show to celebrate world peace & understanding and the Handson Presidents Year with Governor Dulce, was held at the new Resorts World Manila with RC Greenmeadows as host club. Four hundred tickets were made available by RCG Pres Romy Sangalang so that Rotarians & families may enjoy the truly world-class performance of the Cast.. RC Holy Spirit officers and friends were there to appreciate the event. Through its distinct 5 1/2-month program of travel and cultural immersion, Up with People for 20 years now has been providing young people from around the world with international education and personal growth, leadership training, service learning and performing arts as they travel through three continents. This year 2010, one month of that period has been dedicated by the participants for work here in Manila

RCHS held the clubs annual planning session last May 22, 2010 at the Pepetons Restaurant that started promptly at 9AM. Incoming President Lyds Pedernal presented seven (7) priorities and goals to be achieved for RY 2010-2011 that are in line with the strategic plan of RI and District 3780. These are:

She also said that Entrepreneurship Development will be the flagship program of her administration. Lending guidance to the planning session was incoming AG Rencie Padernal who shared his thoughts on how to effectively manage the club and its projects. He lauded Incoming President Lyds for a well-prepared action plan and the members enthusiasm to participate. Meanwhile, incumbent President Linda Palattao thanked the members for the cooperation and support extended to her that assured the successful completion of projects for RY 2009-2010. In the afternoon, the members broke up into groups to discuss details of each committees plans for RY 2010-2011. Reports were thereafter rendered.

When R.I. President John Kenny wisely chose The Future of Rotary Is in Your Hands he was actually delivering many messages. One, he is involving all Rotarians in the task of keeping Rotary alive way into the future. Two, with all the R.I. Programs involving the youth, he is saying that our insurance for survival lies in getting the young involved and ready to take over in their time Three, he is telling us all that we are in this together and once we accept this role given to us then we are assured that the future of Rotary is, indeed, safely in capable hands and the good work we do to make the world better shall go on and on. Part of a message of Mar Ocampo III Mother Teresa was once asked why she did the works she did. There would always be so many she could not reach. Why did she pour herself to sully into her self appointed task, knowing that she could never come close to meeting all the needs? Her answer was simple. She said, I do what I can, where I am, with what I have. Just like Mother Teresa, we Rotarians should strive to imitate her. We all know that the needs of our own adopted communities are endless and we can not even come close to meet them all. Let us do what we can and we must use our resources in the best possible way by planning our work to be done ahead of time in order that we will be able to maximize its use, help more people under our care and make a difference. Our officers for RY 2010-2011 are now ready to take over the administration of our club. Congratulations and we hope our club will be able to do more in this coming Rotary year. RCHS President Linda Palattao receives trophies and citations from District Governor Dulce dB. Coyukiat (R) during the District Awards & Governors Recognition Night 2010 held last May 31, 2010 at the Marriott Hotel. RC Holy Spirit has been declared an Outstanding Rotary Club Bronze, one of fifteen clubs cited as outstanding during RI 2009-2010. There are 97 clubs in District 3780. President Linda has likewise been declared Outstanding Club President Bronze, a major individual award. Pres Linda also received the District Governors Leadership Award and citation. AG Chito Borromeo has been declared the Most Outstanding Assistant Governor in the District. End-Polio Campaign is Threatened

Bill Gates walked into the World Health Organization's headquarters in Geneva and was greeted by bad news. Polio was spreading across Africa, even after he gave $700 million to try to wipe out the disease. That outbreak raged last summer, and this week a new outbreak hit Tajikistan, which hadn't seen polio for 19 years. The spread threatens one of the most ambitious health campaigns in the world, the effort to destroy the crippling disease. Mr. Gates asked: "So, what do we do next?" That question goes to the heart of one of the most controversial debates in global health: Is humanity better served by waging wars on individual diseases, like polio? Or is it better to pursue a broader set of health goals simultaneouslyimproving hygiene, expanding immunizations, providing clean drinking waterthat don't eliminate any one disease, but might improve the overall health of people in developing countries? In May, the organizations behind the polio fight, including WHO, Unicef, Rotary International and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, plan to announce a major revamp of their strategy to address shortcomings exposed by the outbreaks. After the global victory over smallpox 30 years ago, a rush of energy went into similar "vertical" attacks on single diseases. The polio program followed that approach and made great gains. Led by WHO and donors such as Rotary, the campaigns by the year 2000 slashed the world's polio cases to under 1,000 from 350,000 in 1988. Polio fighters had planned to eradicate the disease by 2000. At the meeting last June 3 presided over by incoming President Lyds Padernal, the members present discussed an overview of the forthcoming club events including the Charter Anniversary program for June 29, 2010, the campaign to solicit ads for the RCHS Souvenir Magazine to be published in conjunction with the Governors visit. In early August., and a project-financing opportunity from Canada Fund in Manila.

RC Holy Spirit Submits Proposed Projects to Canada Fund

In response to a request for proposals from the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, RCHS submitted last June 15, 2010 two proposed projects for consideration: Magnegosyo Program to provide training and technical assistance tp barangay based groups and individuals Alternative Learning System for Out-of-School Youth & Adults to help them obtain skills and certifications for work placement or entry to higher formal education. The project proposal drafts were developed by PE Lyds Pedernal, Rtn Jun Delgra and Rtn Girlie Casuela and then finalized with the assistance of PN Ped Condeno, Incoming PN Kent Valderrama and Rtn Ric Salvador last June 14 & 15.

Historic Moment -- Rotary votes to admit women

The 1989 Council on Legislation vote to admit women into Rotary clubs worldwide remains a watershed moment in the history of Rotary.
In 1950, an enactment to delete the word male from the Standard Rotary Club Constitution was proposed by a club in India during the Council. From 1950 to 1989, the Council considered 13 proposals to allow women into Rotary. In 1977, the Rotary Club of Duarte, California, USA, decided to admit women as members in violation of the RI Constitution and Standard Rotary Club Constitution. Because of this violation, the club's membership in Rotary International was terminated in March 1978. In a lawsuit filed by the Duarte club in 1983, the California Superior Court ruled in favor of Rotary International, upholding gender-based qualification for membership in California Rotary clubs. But in 1986, the California Court of Appeals reversed the lower court's decision, preventing the enforcement of the provision in the state. The California Supreme Court refused to hear the case, and it was appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. On 4 May 1987, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Rotary clubs may not exclude women from membership on the basis of gender. Rotary issued a policy statement asserting that any Rotary club in the United States could admit qualified women into membership. The RI Board of Directors encouraged "all clubs in the U.S. to give fair and equal consideration to candidates for membership without regard to gender." In 1989, at its first meeting after the Supreme Court ruling, the Council on Legislation in Singapore voted to eliminate the requirement in the RI Constitution that membership in Rotary clubs be limited to men. More than 20 years after the Council's vote, there are nearly 200,000 female Rotarians. Women have served in leadership positions as high as the RI Board of Directors and The Rotary Foundation Board of Trustees.

Congratulations to all the officers and members of Rotary Club of Holy Spirit on our 5th Charter Anniversary. I wish to thank everybody for helping our club earn the Outstanding Club -Bronze award for Rotary Year 2009-2010, thus placing RC Holy Spirit among the top 15 clubs in the District where there are 97 clubs. Weve also been cited for turning the situation around from an almost dying club to one which is very much active and a winner in District 3780. Of course we appreciate that the groundwork toward this milestone had been laid by IPP Dodgie Osabel and CP Nides Respicio. I am very confident that the club will do even better this coming RY 2010-2011, under the stewardship of President Lydia Pedernal. Attending the Rotary Convention has been a unique experience. This years convention in Montreal was a smashing success. More than 18,000 Rotarians from all over the world came to get a chance to learn strategies that would help them become more effective in their Rotary service. The plenary sessions were inspiring and very informative. An international meeting like this offers unparalleled networking and fellowship opportunities. We met many Filipinos, Americans, Canadians, British, Koreans, and Bangladeshis. We enjoyed our sightseeing trips around the old and new Montreal. Their Churches, buildings and houses have unique and beautiful architectural designs. Indeed our trip has been a very memorable one. Let us all continue to do our mission of making people whose lives is our concern realize their dreams of a better world as we accept that the future is in our hands.

RCHS prepares for 5th Anniversary

Medical-diagnostic mission serves elderly patients

The medical-diagnostic mission, called Gamot Para sa Kapwa, held on June 19, 2010 at the covered court of Don Antonio Heights drew elderly patients from various areas in Barangay Holy Spirit. The mission was a partnership project of Don Antonio Heights Homeowners Association, RC Holy Spirit and SM Foundation as major sponsor. The mission had been timed with the 34th Founding Anniversary celebration of DAHHA. A total of 240 patients were attended to by doctors, 87 ECG examinations, 87 x-rays, 27 optical examinations, 121 FBS measurement, 110 bone density screening, and 5 acupuncture. The acupuncture service was provided by no less than Rtn Dr Bong. PP Dr Roger Belleza, a veteran of medical-dental missions, spearheaded the conduct of this project. Through his relentless efforts, doctors, optometrist, nurses, pharmacists as well as paramedical staff came to offer the free services. SM Foundation provided all the needed medicines, medical supplies and the mobile x-ray and ECG van. At Dr Bellezas invitation, Natrapharma representatives came to conduct FBS testing. DAHHA provided the venue, security, and snacks & meals for the volunteers. The Red Cross QC Chapter, through PE Dr Lyds Pedernal, sent a stand-by ambulance and 10 paramedics. Other volunteers were provided by SM Foundation, DAHHA, the Youth for Christ movement, the Interact Club of Holy Spirit and other volunteer organizations to assist in the mission. IPP Cong. Dodgie Osabel provided the public address system and soothing music for the patients and volunteers. Rotarians Marcia Salvador, Thelma Marcelo and Ric Salvador were there to assist mission leader Dr Roger Belleza, Rtn Dr Bong and the volunteers..

Incoming RI President asks Rotary clubs to adopt cowboy logic and be bigger, better and bolder
As the 2010 RI Convention in drew to a close on 23 June, RI President-elect Ray Klinginsmith outlined his plans for his term, which begins 1 July. Klinginsmith will ask Rotarians to apply "cowboy logic" and make Rotary clubs "bigger, better, and bolder." The fundamental principles of cowboy logic are taking pride in your work, talking less and saying more, doing what has to be done, and remembering that some things just arent for sale, he explained during the closing plenary session. "I believe the way for Rotary to remain viable and vibrant in the next century is to help our clubs to be bigger, better, and bolder," Klinginsmith said. "The clubs are the life and breath of Rotary. Therefore, it is clear to me that my job is to help the district governors to help the clubs. We can do it, and we will do it, if all of us follow the simple solution of cowboy logic." Klinginsmith also listed improvements that he and the RI Board have already authorized, including revisions to the RI Strategic Plan to make it easier to implement and evaluate, a realignment of RI committees to fit the revised plan, the recruitment of 41 Rotary coordinators, and a commitment to finding new ways to attract younger members and enable them to serve as district governors.
RCHS wins major District Awards

RCHS President Linda Palattao received trophies and citations from District Governor Dulce dB. Coyukiat during the District Awards & Governors Recognition Night 2010 held last May 31, 2010 at the Marriott Hotel. RC Holy Spirit has been declared an Outstanding Rotary Club Bronze, one of fifteen clubs cited as outstanding during RI 2009-2010. There are 97 clubs in District 3780. President Linda has likewise been declared Outstanding Club President Bronze, a major individual award. She also received the District Governors Leadership Award. Our AG Chito Borromeo has been declared one of two Most Outstanding Assistant Governors in the District. Both AG Chito and AG Edmund Chiu received Excellent Achievement Awards while PDS Badong Viari was given Exemplary Achievement Award. PDG Danny Fausto received Certificate of Recognition for heading the Rotary Leadership Institute. PDG Danny, AG Edmund and PDS Badong are honorary members of RCHS.
