Dual certification in ESL and content area preferred. Description: Baychester Middle School was founded by a team of educators who also are community members, leaders, and social justice advocates. The team is committed to helping scholars become academic leaders, as well as active citizens in their world. We are seeking educators with a proven track record of helping scholars grow as readers, writers, problem solvers, scientist, historians, and researchers. Eligibility Requirements: New York City certification in the appropriate content area, with satisfactory ratings All staff are encouraged to participate in two full weeks of summer professional development in August (8/20 8/31) for planning units, curriculum maps, assessments, and to plan scholar orientation. All staff are also encouraged to participate in weekly after-school professional development on Mondays (Compensation according to the UFT contract and advance notice will be provided. Staff participation in this activity is voluntary, but strongly encouraged, as it is very important to the development of the school). Duties and Responsibilities: Because roles in small schools are varied and complex, serious consideration will be given to applicants who demonstrate through their resume and cover letter experience and/or willingness to become involved in these essential aspects: Work within a non-traditional school schedule and organizational structure that meets the needs of all scholars including English Language learners and scholars requiring special education services. This includes teaching classes in hour long blocks or longer where appropriate. Commitment to developing an individual growth plan in collaboration with the Principal and/or Assistant Principal that will monitor progress and asses his/her effectiveness in enhancing student achievement. Collaborate with administrators and colleagues to align curriculum and assessments to Common Core State Standards utilizing a backwards-planning design model/UbD (For more information on about backwards planning/Ubd, see Wiggins and McTighe). Work with colleagues and school leaders to use interim assessment data, fine-tune teaching, re-teach, and help struggling scholars (For more information on re-teaching see Driven by Data: A Practical Guide to Improve Instruction by Paul Bambrick-Santoyo). Serve as a faculty advisor to a small advisory group of scholars at least four times per week. This includes consistent parental contact with parents/guardians of advisory scholars as well as implement schools advisory curriculum. Selection Criteria: Evidence of willingness to carry out the above duties and responsibilities Commitment to working in a new start-up organization Demonstrated commitment to professional growth Familiarity with professional literature and best practice in content area Ability to plan and prepare lessons and unit plans Experience in differentiating instruction for all students, including special education and English Language Learners Ability to assess student performance and follow up Ability to incorporate reading and writing strategies in daily routines and classroom instruction Excellent classroom management skills Demonstrated success of working collaboratively with colleagues and parents/caregivers

In addition to a demo lesson, personal interview, and group interview, teacher candidates must present a teaching portfolio including evidence of curriculum planning such as a 4 week unit plan demonstrating the backwards planning model and any teaching artifacts collected through their teaching career. Applicants must provide three references and a copy of their most recent observation from a supervisor or principal. Work Schedule and Salary: As per Collective Bargaining Agreement
