Scope of the Course: 45 class periods will be spent examining the 39 books of the Old Testament. After a general introduction to the Old Testament, we will study each book in a survey fashion. Included in each discussion will be the relevant historical, cultural and geographic background of the book. The student should be able to trace the major movements of God's people both in geography and in time. For each book we will note the author, date, theme, outline and distinctive contribution to the Bible. By the end of this semester the student should have a working knowledge of each of the books and be prepared and motivated for a more detailed study in the future. Purpose: Life change based on a working knowledge of the bible is the ultimate goal of the Bible Institute curriculum. It is extremely helpful to understand the Scriptures as a whole. Bible Survey provides an overview of each book of the Bible and how the books relate to each other. Course Goals: In exams and assignments the Student will be expected to: 1. List and spell correctly the names of the books of the Old Testament. 2. Reproduce a theme and general outline for each book covered. 3. Differentiate books by their distinctive contribution to the canon. 4. Define the various literary styles and identify the subsections of Scripture. 5. Give illustrations of the importance of geography, history and culture to interpretation. 6. Trace the development of the Theocratic Kingdom in history. 7. Read and summarize each chapter of the books studied. 8. Study the key points of the syllabus and class lectures so as to be ready to answer multiple choice, true & false and matching questions that will be presented on each mega-quiz. 9. Maintain a journal of practical insights gleaned from lectures and assignments with a minimum of 45 entries (journal assignment). Textbook: Talk Through the Bible by Bruce Wilkinson and Kenneth Boa Procedures/Assignments for the Course 1. Answer Ten "Mega-quizzes" will be given throughout the course (approximately one every 4 1/2 class periods). These will be based on subjects covered in class and printed notes. For the first Mega-quiz you will be asked to memorize the books of the Old Testament, in order and spelled correctly (Class period #4) 2. Draw 5 Maps: These maps are to be hand-drawn with basic simplicity. Students must do their own work from source materials. Tracing maps from source materials is allowed but tracing or copying other students work is not allowed. All of the information needed for producing the required maps is found in The Moody Atlas of Bible Lands, Bakers Bible Atlas, The Macmillan Bible Atlas and The Ryrie Study Bible. You will not be graded on artistry, but rather on neatness and accuracy. Maps do not need to be color coordinated. All maps must be done on white, unlined, A4 paper. One map per page, please!! Note on each map the sources used. (Due class period #10) Map #1 The Biblical World at the Time of the Patriachs Include: 1. Prepare a Research Paper: Write an essay on any topic that interests you relevant to the study of Genesis through Malachi. It must be: A. Original (750 minimum of your own words, not counting Scripture or quotes from other authors). B. Five sources must be consulted, sited (quoted in your paper) and listed in a Bibliography. You can use but not count: English Dictionaries, Study Bibles, Textbooks and Concordances. Use the library! Sources MUST be approved by your instructor. Internet sources are limited to two! You MUST explain why a source (from the library or the internet) is trustworthy and have your instructors approval before using it in your essay. C. Your essay MUST be written in Turabian citation style using footnotes. Include a word count on the Title Page. This also means your paper is to be typed (double-spaced with minimum font size of 11 point). The total possible points for this project is 100. Inadequate word count (-10 points per 50 words, ex. 680 words = -20 points). Failure to type (-10 points). Failure to spell check and Grammar Check (-10 points). The paper must use a standard report format as follows: 1. Topic Proposal: Submit a typed Topic Proposal (on blank A4 paper), which tells your Research Paper Objective (Due class period #30). Your topic proposal should include three things: 1. The topic you have chosen to research. 2. The question you have chosen to answer in your research paper. 3. Your answer(s) to this question in the form of a thesis statement, including major subpoints to support it (example: The word day in Genesis 1 means a 24-hour day. This is true a. because it is the normal use of this word in the rest of Scripture, b. because ). Also include 4. the resources you will use to support your research. Once approved, a student is committed to the stated objective (thesis) of his Topic Proposal. To receive full credit, the approved Topic Proposal (i.e., the signed copy) will be submitted as an appendix to the Research Paper. (Grade = 10 pts) Topics that will be approved will likely be in one of the following areas of research: A. A study of an OT book or chapter of a book, i.e., a study of Gen 3. B. A study of an OT personality, i.e., a study of character qualities Caleb. C. A study of an OT topic, i.e., the design of the Tabernacle. D. A study of a Hebrew word in the OT, i.e., the use of the word day in Gen. 1. E. A study of a background subject to the OT, i.e., who were the children of Anak?
2. Report Format: A. Title Page (Title, your name, date, word count, class, professor) (Grade = 5 pts) B. Introductory paragraph stating the objective (thesis) of the paper. (Grade = 5 pts) C. Body of the Research Paper that shows development of your topic. (Grade = 40 pts) D. Quoted Footnotes (Grade = 20 pts) 1. The body of the paper must include at least five quotations from research source materials. Each quotation will be graded (3 points) for its contribution to its paragraph and integration with its paragraph (total 15 points). 2. Each quotation is to be footnoted (1 point; total 5 points) according to the Turabian citation style. E. Conclusion that (1) summarizes the topic, (2) expresses the achievement of the objective, and (3) makes personal applications from the subject. (Grade = 5 pts) F. Bibliography: A appendix page that lists at least five sources that you have consulted (e.g.: books, articles from encyclopedias, magazines, Internet sources). Full bibliographical information required! Bibles, English dictionaries, class syllabus, and concordances do not count as research sources! In addition to the Turabian style citation include the number of pages of each book you have read (Requirement: 50 pages of collateral reading) . (Grade = 15 pts) G. Bonus: A bonus will be considered for subject-enhancing artwork, pictures, maps, and charts; a penalty will be issued for low-quality printing! Up to 3 at 2 points each. Notes: (1) Each item MUST be given a title or explanation. (2) Source information credit MUST be given. (Possible Bonus = 6 pts) The Research Paper is due Class Period # 40. (Mr. Steve will assist through Class Period # 38.) 3. Read the Textbook: Before each class period begins, students will be expected to have completed a reading assignment from Genesis Malachi (about 15 chapters per class). There will also be regular reading assignments from the textbook, Talk Thru the Bible. All reading will be reported on the attached Chapter Title & Reading Report Form. Two reports per semester on class periods #21 and #41. 4. Write Chapter Titles: Each student is also to write out their own, original, legible 3-10 word title to each chapter of the books of Genesis through Malachi (you may skip 1 & 2 Chronicles and Proverbs). You may not use ditto marks! You may not use chapter titles commonly found in various editions of Study Bibles, the internet or from other students; you must make your own original titles! All chapter titles will also be reported on the attached Chapter Title & Reading Report Form. 5. Journal Assignment: Maintain a journal of practical insights gleaned from lectures and assignments with a minimum of 45 entries. These must be legible if handwritten. The journals are due by class #42. OLD TESTAMENT SURVEY INTRO Introductory Matters: 1. A Christian Philosophy of History. Chart from: Dispensationalism Explained by Dr. Clarence E. Mason. Published by Word of Life, 2004.
2. Relationship between the Two Testaments: a. Augustine: "The Old Testament revealed in the New, the New veiled in the Old." b. Scroggie: "The New is in the Old contained, and the Old is in the New explained." c. Christ is the theme of both!! In the OT we have Christ in shadow, pictures, type and ritual. In the NT we have Christ in substance, person, truth and reality!!
