If alienated, man no longer works for self-fulfillment, rather for satisfaction of capitalists needs Surrenders life to bourgeoisie Alienated because work no longer voluntary but imposed Worker -- instrument for profit making In other words: if you hate your work, you hate yourself In Communist Manifesto, Marx attacks mans alienation from humanity POWER AND PROPERTY ARE CONNECTED Intensified in capitalist system facilitated accumulation of power in hands of few Optimistically assumed attainment of harmonious state thru collective property Illustrated this thru withering away of the state on which in classless society, property is no longer power because all property is owned by the community In contrast to domination of private property, public property leads to administration of things replacing government administration of resources Marx concept of public property (relation of man & things) follows Lockes concept of private property (relationship of man to things with combination of human effort and natural resources0 Excessive optimism flawed in sense that attainment of harmonious state by different functions is hard to attain Nevertheless, liberal doctrine of withering away of state valuable reminder that state exists for man not the other way around MARX AS HISTORICAL MATERIALIST Material factors determine the way we think Further advances Hegels world spirit by saying material changes impacts history For Hegel: history is driven by opposite tensions, but resolved by sudden change For Marx: Material changes such as economic forces drives history forward Marx believes material relations (basis of society) impacts thoughts and ideas On the other hand, societys superstructure reflects material relations HISTORY: A MATTER OF WHO OWNS PRODUCTION Illustrates : class struggles between capitalist and proletariat; Those who owns means of production and those who do not Because of capitalist resistance to relinquish power, changes can be done thru revolution VIEW ON LABOR INFLUENCED BY HEGEL Hegel: dialectic/interactive view between man and nature As man interacts it with nature and transforms it, so does nature transforms mans consciousness Echoes saying, tell me what you do, Ill tell you who you are INTERACTIVE RELATIONSHIP OF HAND AND CONSCIOUSNESS the way you think is connected to the job you do Hegel and Marx believe work is connected to essence of mankind
