Cell phones: the good, the bad

The other day I was on my way home from Findlay when I got a flat tire. I pulled off the road into a driveway and call for the road assistance program I have. It was nice. Within 15 minutes a repairman with the service had found me. He used his smart phone to push in the mailbox number of where I was located and knew instantly where to go with his GPS on the phone. He knew more than me. I only knew I was west of Findlay on US 224 and had been driving about 15 minutes. I had no idea where I was located. It it times like this when I appreciate the good about cell phones and smart phones. The bad is that you can receive bad news, no matter where you are located. I had that happen recently with a phone call. Fortunately I knew the call I was to receive might not be pleasant, so I made sure I was in a private location where I wasnt surrounded by people or shopping in a store. That is the bad part of cell phones. Unless you put it on vibrate and choose to ignore it while the caller leaves a message it is always a part of our life. Even when driving down the road when I dont answer, the phone dings to tell me I missed a call. I stress. Maybe I should pull off. Maybe it is something really important. I usually end up checking the message as soon as it is safely possible to do so. Cell phones provide a wonderful safety net for people on the road, farmers in the field, even children who may need assistance and know how to dial 911. Unfortunately it also provides a 24-hour, seven-day-aweek link to the real world, which sometimes can be bad news, or just annoying callers. Would I give up my cell phone? No. I rely on it. I am getting better about ignoring the messages while Im trying to relax. So if I dont call back, it may be because I am trying to enjoy some personal, alonewithout-my-phone time.

OTTAWA Bouncing basketballs, happy smiles, and a busy gym was the scene last week when Camp for Champs was held at the Ottawa-Glandorf gym. This is the second year John Lammers, a 2012 O-G graduate, has coordinated the program for special needs students in Putnam County. The program pairs each student with a high school volunteer. This year there were 23 special needs students enrolled in the three-day event with 25 volunteers working with the students. Lammers started the program last year. I like basketball and I have a special needs sister, he said. I thought it would be nice to have a program where the students could do something fun together.: Lammers said it was while he was attending Leadership Workshops in his sophomore and junior years that he learned the importance of giving back to the community. I thought this would be a nice way to give back, he said. Lammers found business and individual sponsors for the camp. Each student receives their own basketball, T-shirt a trophy and McDonalds gift cards. Then I just started asking my friends if they would help out, he said. I sent out texts and it wasnt hard to get people to offer to volunteer. I most enjoy seeing the happy smiles on all the kids, Lammers said. That is what is most reward-

Lammers, 18, was selected as the overall winner in the 10th annual Leaders of Tomorrow program, which was presented recently by The Lima News and LimaOhio.com and sponsored by Bluffton University. The three-sport varsity athlete and scholar was honored for, among other endeavors, the start of Camp for Champs, He said Leah, his special needs sister is his driving force, and his hero. Modern Woodmen plants trees at new schools

Putnam County Modern Woodmen of America members recently put their hands where their hearts are. Members of Modern Woodmen of Americas chapters 4415 and 7867 along with The Tiny Tots Youth Service Club worked together by planting 3 Beech trees, 5 Knock Out Roses, 7 Wardi Yews and 2 Karl Forester Reed Grass landscaping at the Glandorf Elementary and Ottawa Elementary schools. These programs are part of the organizations Plant A Tree Program and the Good Neighbors Program. The Plant A Tree Program allows Modern Woodmen members an opportunity to give a community a lasting gift. A total of $650 of trees was donated by Modern Woodmen. The Good Neighbors Program allows chapters across the country to do hands on repair and community beautification projects. A total of $1,050 of landscaping was donated by Modern Woodmen. Coordinated by local Modern Woodmen members, chapters provide opportunities to connect through social activities and volunteer projects. Ottawa-Glandorf Rotary Club hosts bicyclists, donates $1,200

Ottawa-Glandorf Rotary Club members hosted 13 bicyclists and two drivers June 9-10 who came through Ottawa as a part of the M.E.S.A. Tour Bicycle Ride benefitting the Rotary District 6600 Medical Equipment and Supplies Abroad (M.E.S.A.) program. Upon arriving in Ottawa, the bicyclists congregated at the Putnam County YMCA until they were picked up by their hosts. Riders enjoyed fellowship and a barbecue dinner Saturday evening and spent the night in the homes of Rotarians. On Sunday, they participated in local church services and breakfast before leaving on their next leg of the bike tour. The weeklong bicycle tour started June 8 in Marion and traveled through Upper Sandusky, Ottawa, Defiance, Van Wert and Lima before returning to Marion June 13. During the weekend, O-G Rotary presented the bicyclists with a $1,200 donation to M.E.S.A. O-G Rotary has made an annual contribution to the M.E.S.A. Tour Bicycle Ride since the year 2000. M.E.S.A. is a project of Rotary District 6600 which includes O-G and 61 other Rotary clubs in northwest Ohio. M.E.S.A. is active in meeting humanitarian needs around the world by identifying, collecting, storing and shipping millions of dollars of second-hand medical equipment, supplies and technology and around the world. Although the medical supplies are second-hand surplus in the United States, they are considered state-of-the-art to the healing

Evil thrives when good men still choose to do nothing

It is sad and unfortunate to see the declining state of our county, state and country. Where once the law was held sacred and justice was blind, justice is now unequal and ignores the law. In the battle over the Road 5 Project, justice is also deaf to the voices of the opposed. Ohio Revised Code requires a unanimously-approved resolution by the commissioners to do a road project involving eminent domain before it can proceed, and in this case, there was NO resolution approving the project only consent by stakeholders. Yet the project continues, filed without legal authority. Our forefathers fought to preserve the rights of people and we have given those rights up to power-hungry politicians. You may think the battle over the Road 5 Project has nothing to do with you. Think again. One day, the government will come to your front door telling you what you will do or what will be done to your property. You will find you have no recourse because the judicial system will protect the government and elected officials at all cost. You will have no rights because you have willingly given your God given rights over to the people in control. Our government is no longer the ...government of the people by the people for the people, but rather the government of the few by the few for the few. OTTAWA A 24-year-old Continental man was indicted in connection to last months robbery of the Cut Rate Tobacco store. Maurice L. Harsh, II, 118 Lakeland Drive, Apt. 4, Continental, was indicted on aggravated robbery, possessing criminal tools and tampering with evidence following Fridays session of the Putnam County Grand Jury. According to Ottawa Police Lt. David Winslow, Harsh turned himself in after a cashier picked him out of a photo lineup. Harsh is believed to have entered the business, located at 820 N. Locust St., at 5:20 p.m. May 11, and left with an undetermined amount of money from the cash register and tobacco items worth $134. Others indicted include the following: Charity L. Safe and Drug Free Coalition holds year-end meeting

The Safe and Drug Free Coalition held their year-end meeting on June 5, in the Putnam County Educational Service Centers Assembly Hall. The videos from the first annual Putnam County Youth Advisory Board Video Contest were shown to the attendees. Beth Tobe, the Youth Advisory Boards facilitator, said the teens wanted students to make a video that would target their peers. The Board selected topics they believed to be pertinent to their fellow students: distracted driving, alcohol, depression/suicide, and eating disorders; the video had to address one or more of the topics. Ottoville High School submitted the winning video, Life: Are You Willing To Risk It? which addressed different types of distracted driving. Jon Thorbahn, Ottoville High School Principal, stated students produced the video by themselves, without assistance from teachers. The 25-30 and also students in fifth and sixth grades. These events have offered children a safe and drug-free activity enjoyed by all who attend. Schroeder presented Jim Kincaid, the principal of Columbus Grove Elementary School with the School/Community Award. Schroeder stated, This person has always worked with us to provide prevention messages to his students, in the areas of drug prevention and bullying. If we needed a location to hold a county event, he was always willing to work with us to make the event happen. (He) has, numerous times, gone beyond the call of duty to help make his school and the county a better place. The Safe and Drug Free Coalition is comprised of individuals who represent various sectors in the county. The coalitions goal is to target areas that put youth at risk, and develop methods to reduce or eliminate the risk. For further information, contact Kathy Schroeder, at 419-523-5951.

OTTAWA While politicians talk behind closed doors in Washington, AARP Ohio volunteers are conducting Youve Earned a Say listening sessions in communities across the state to give Ohioans the chance to make their voices heard on the future of Medicare and Social Security. Kalida residents Jim and Cheryl Fortman, who volunteer with the AARP Ohio advocacy team, are teaming up with the Putnam Co. Council on Aging and The Ottawa Senior Center to offer a Youve Earned a Say listening session at 1 p.m. on Monday, June 25, at the Ottawa Senior Center. Call the Center at 419-523-5593 to reserve a seat. All ages welcome. AARP Ohio volunteers are conducting listening sessions to gather residents ideas because members tell us they want to be heard. Social Security and Medicare are critical issues for most of AARPs 1.5 million members in Ohio. Nine out of 10 Ohioans who are age 65 and older are collecting the Social Security benefits they earned during a lifetime of hard work, and more than 2 million Ohioans rely on Medicare for their health coverage. Participants in all the listening sessions across the state are being asked to complete a short survey on Social Security and Medicare. Those who cant attend a session can complete the survey online at www.earnedasay.org. Upcoming fifth and sixth grade students from Putnam County participated in Jumping Into JEDI at the Putnam County Educational Service Center on June 6. The children participated in numerous activities that they were encouraged to bring back to their schools in order to teach others about making positive choices and feeling good about themselves. Savannah Guevara, Leipsic, Jacquelyn Jimenez, Leipsic, and Skylee Pardo, Ottawa, made friends from other schools during Jumping Into JEDI. Students wove a web during an activity in which they had to tell something they liked about themselves during Jumping Into JEDI.

Esther E. Duling, 89, died at 8:55 p.m. June 10, 2012, at Putnam Acres Care Center, Ottawa. She was born Nov. 19, 1922, in Glandorf to Ignatius and Mary Nuveman Schroeder, who preceded her in death. On June 9, 1945, she married James J. Duling, who survives in Ottawa. Mrs. Duling was a homemaker. She was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Ottawa, and its Altar Rosary Society. She was a graduate of Glandorf High School, where she was the class valedictorian. She loved sewing, gardening and canning. Survivors also include four children, Thomas (Ruth) Duling, of Davisburg, Mich., Dorothy (Tom) Leib, of Marion, Marsha (Greg) Stechschulte, of Columbus Grove, and Timothy Duling, of Ottawa; 11 grandchildren; 12 greatgrandchildren; and a brother, Andrew Schroeder of Ottawa. She was preceded in death by a son, David Duling; six brothers, Anthony, Martin, Hugo, Benno, Linus and Robert Schroeder; and three sisters, Genevieve Schroeder, Agnes Warnecke and Mary Morman. Doris M. Burman Rayman

Doris M. Burman Rayman, 81, died at 12:18 p.m. June 10, 2012, at Lima Memorial Health System. She was born Nov. 5, 1930, in Putnam County to Orval and Ethel Betts Burman, who preceded her in death. On Dec. 15, 1951, she married Stanley Rayman, who died June 23, 2011. Mrs. Rayman was a homemaker and had been a waitress at The Village Pantry restaurant. She had also operated a coffee shop and gas station in Vaughnsville for several years. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her great-grandchildren. Survivors include two daughters, Rhonda (Bruce) Sparrow and Sondra (Kirk) Martini, both of Lima; four grandchildren, Lisa (Robert) Smith, of Vaughnsville, Amy (Kevin) Busick, of Pataskala, Matthew Martini, of Celina, and Michael (Kayla Daley) Martini, of Vaughnsville; five greatgrandchildren, Zach and Ian Smith, Thomas and Lillianne Busick, and Morgan Martini; a sister, Evelyn Burman, of Vaughnsville, two brothersin-law, Robert (Alice) Rayman, of Romeoville, Ill., and Gene (Alice) Rayman, of Elida; and a sister-inlaw, Mildred Rayman, of Ottoville. The bell at Columbus Grove First Presbyterian Church cracked when they rang it to announce Abraham Lincolns death. St. Johns United Methodist Church was an Evangelical United Brethren Church, Columbus Grove, when it was built. This was the style of churches the EUBs built These were only a few of the historical facts shared last Sunday when the Putnam County Historical Society hosted open houses at four Putnam County Churches including the Presbyterian and United Methodist Church. Tours were also given of St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Miller City, and Christ Lutheran Church in Continental.
