WARBA TO PARTICIPATE IN
MAYORS EXCHANGE WITH
MANISTEE
City ofcials to tour Lake Michigan city
on June 27, Manistee ofcials set to
tour Big Rapids on July 18
By Jonathan Eppley
Pioneer Staff Writer
BIG RAPIDS In an effort to learn
what programs, services and amenities
work in different communities, Big
Rapids city ofcials will travel to the
City of Manistee this month as part of a
mayors exchange agreement.
Mayor Mark Warba and seven other city
ofcials will travel to Manistee on June
27 to go on a day-long tour of the city
and its amenities and facilities. Sites
to be visited will include Manistees
city hall, Ramsdell Theatre, several
local beaches and parks, the industrial
park, wastewater treatment plant and
municipal marina and boat launch.
Were comparable to Manistee in size
and in the things we offer, Warba said.
One major difference between us is
that were fortunate to have a major
university in our community. Also, we
both have access to water, but they
have access to Lake Michigan.
As I look at what we have in common
and issues that both communities
confront, seeing and hearing how they
deal with things in Manistee might be
things we can bring back here to Big
Rapids.
City Manager Steve Sobers, City
Commissioner Lynn Anderson,
Department of Public Works director
Mark Gifford, Department of
Neighborhood Services director Mark
Sweppenheiser, Department of Public
Safety director Andrea Nerbonne, city
treasurer Jon Locke and Roben-Hood
Airport manager Mike Lafferty also will
participate in the one-day exchange.
Sobers will be talking to Manistee
ofcials to compare services such as
DPS, running a municipal airport and
the benet of cultural amenities.
There will be talk back and forth
comparing what we do to what they
do, Sobers said. Weve got a growing
airport, and they have a scheduled
airline service to Chicago. (Lafferty)
has talked about the possibility of
something like that. Well ask how to do
it and how to get it started. They also
have done some things with their DPS
in the EMS area, which we have not
done.
Manistee city ofcials are scheduled
to tour Big Rapids on July 18. A list
of preliminary tour stops include
Artworks, the airport, Riverwalk, Ferris
State Universitys FLITE Library, DPS,
Nisbett-Fairman buildings, wastewater
treatment plant and city hall.
Warba is encouraged by the
collaboration and possibility of new
ideas and opportunities that could
result from the exchange.
This will be an informative day. Its
never too late to learn from others
about what they do, Warba said. Its an
opportunity to look at what they have
and what we have; whats worked for
them and if it can work here; and if they
have similar things that didnt work out
so well there, why not and what can we
do to make them work here?
WHATS YOUR RING TYPE?
WEDDING BANDS TO FIT EVERY
PERSONALITY
(NewsUSA) - Its one of the toughest
decisions for any bride and groom
-- and, no, we dont mean where to
seat feuding relatives at the wedding
reception.
Were talking wedding bands, symbols
of eternal love, and the most important
pieces of jewelry a man and woman will
ever own.
In the search for the perfect wedding
bands, many couples turn to platinum
to ensure they are getting the best
value for their money. With a bevy
of styles and a range of prices -- a
platinum band can be purchased
starting at $1,000 -- its easy to nd
a ring that best suits the brides
personality.
No matter what type you are, says
style expert Michael OConnor, youre
guaranteed of getting the best possible
ring for the price because platinum,
being naturally white, will not fade or
change color, lasting over a lifetime of
wear.
Whats your ring type? Read on:
* Down-to-Earth. This no-nonsense
bride has been planning her wedding
for years -- with the stacks of bridal
magazines to prove it -- and knows
exactly what she wants.
Ring type: Instead of anything too
delicate or dainty, look for a heavier,
more solid design. A simple platinum
band or one with a bezel set diamond
ensures a timeless look.
* Adventurous. Shes a risk-taker
whos feeling so daring about her
nuptials that she may even have
considered eloping. (Well, at least a
destination wedding.)
Ring type: A dynamic personality
requires a stand-out ring, so go for a
platinum band set with colored stones
or intricate engraving.
* Social buttery. This people-pleaser
loves to entertain and wants to ensure
that her wedding day is special for
every single guest.
Ring type: A small, discreet gemstone,
like a single solitaire, displayed in
a ush cut on a platinum band will
provide just the right adornment.
* Quirky. This bride is looking for
ways to inject her and her partners

FILM INDUSTRY WILL THRIVE WITH
E-DISTRIBUTION, ACCORDING TO
ANALYSTS
(NewsUSA) - From backroom meetings
in Hollywood to studio lots in Burbank,
distribution has been the buzzword for
entertainment executives.
Although it has been a long time
coming, digital distribution -- the
downloading and streaming of movies
and television shows to consumers
computers, Internet-enabled televisions
and mobile devices -- lm executives
have turned a somewhat blind eye to
the phenom.
And this, says Peter Hoffman, CEO
of Los Angeles-based Seven Arts
Pictures, may be Hollywoods biggest
downfall, if not undoing.
Whether studios like it or not,
consumers would now much rather
stream their movies to their electronic
devices than rent a DVD, said Hoffman.
We have strategically positioned
Seven Arts Entertainment, both in
terms of motion pictures and musical
content, to deliver entertainment
directly to consumers, he added.
Bolstering Hoffmans assessment of
the industry is a report released last
year by accounting giant PwC, which
remains bullish about growth in the
lm industry, projecting that electronic
delivery of movies by various entities
such as Apple and Netix will grow
from $4.8 billion last year to $7.6 billion
in 2015.
One has only to point to Microsoft as
the epitome of a company that has
used technology to its advantage -- and
proted from it.
Even as music companies were battling
piracy issues in court in the late 1990s
and early 2000, Apple began slowly
amassing an overwhelming presence
in the digital music market via iTunes
-- and movie executives should use that
as a teachable moment, said Hoffman.
The lm industry needs to take note
of the lessons learned by the music
industry and try to foster cross-platform
competition, instead of focusing on one
channel of distribution, he said.
While some in Hollywood are still
wrapping their heads around this new
direction, others are looking at it as
an opportunity and potential boon
for growth, marketing and, yes, the
almighty and important bottom line.

A CHILDHOOD CANCER
SURVIVORS MAP TO HEALTH
INSURANCE
(NewsUSA) - There are approximately
50 million uninsured people in the U.S.
Of those uninsured, young adults are
among the highest groups without
health insurance. For childhood cancer
survivors, however, going without
health insurance is not an option.
As a cancer survivor, you will need
health insurance more than ever,
says Pam Gabris, Beyond the Cure
Coordinator. If you dont have a
lapse in coverage, an insurer cannot
deny coverage for your illness or
related health problems. Its critical
that you fully understand your rights
and responsibilities under your health
insurance plan to ensure continuous,
dependable coverage.
Currently, the Affordable Care Act
passed in 2010 allows young adults
to be insured as dependents on their
parents health insurance if they are
under the age of 26. But if that isnt
an option, there are other insurance
opportunities:
Employer-Provided Insurance. Typically,
health insurance offered by employers
is a form of managed care. The most
common types of managed care are
Preferred Provider Organizations
(PPO), Point of Service Plans (POS),
Health Maintenance Organizations
(HMO) and Health Savings Account
(HSA). For questions about which type
of policy you are covered under, talk to

MATH COUNTS: HOW TO RAISE AN
INDEPENDENT LEARNER
(NewsUSA) - Did you know success
in mathematics has been linked to
success in college and future careers?
Simply stated, math counts when it
comes to a bright future.
To mark the importance of math,
Sylvan Learning is offering tips to
help all students excel in mathematics
education and become independent
learners.
The deluge of data that children
encounter in their daily lives makes it
even more important that they build
strong math and statistics skills,
says Dr. Richard Bavaria, senior vice
president for education outreach for
Sylvan Learning.
Good skills in math and statistics
can equip your child with the ability
to discern valid data from misleading
data, and to make intelligent decisions
based on factual data, Bavaria added.
Here are some helpful tips that
parents can use to bridge the gap
between fear of math and the essential
world of numbers:
VALIDATE IT: Dont be a parent who
says, I was never good at math. It
only sends the wrong message that
math is hard and it has null value.
Instead, stress that math is something
that has to be learned by putting time
and effort into it -- like anything else.
ADD IT UP: Point out math in everyday
life. Make sure your child knows that
math is relevant, whether its guring
out how long a road trip will take or
making a grocery budget. Show them
how you work out math problems.
MULTIPLY IT: Find online resources
to help your child acquire the math
skills he or she needs. There are
plenty of free online resources to help
teach and build math skills. Youll nd
everything from entertaining math
tricks to multiplication shortcuts to free
online practice sessions like the ones
on SylvanMathPrep.com. They provide
online video lessons on all sorts of
math problems to help with math
homework and studying.
SOLVE IT: While classroom learning
may be enough for one child, it
may not be enough for another.
Supplemental math instruction from
a professional source can provide
the one-on-one attention that is
sometimes missing from a busy
classroom. Giving a child the time
and opportunity to ask questions and
learn math at their own pace can
open doors of understanding -- and
eventually provide them with the
condence they need to learn in a
classroom setting.
CHECK IT: If algebra is around the
corner for your child, log onto www.
Fit4Algebra.org, and have him or her
take the Fit 4 Algebra Challenge! The
free test takes 20 minutes. Youll also
gain access to other free resources
to help your child get in tip-top shape
for algebra. For more math help,
visit www.sylvanlearning.com or call
1-800-31-SUCCESS.
