Did You Hear Your Father? My son, hear the instruction of your father, And do not forsake the law of your mother; For they will be a graceful ornament on your head, And chains about your neck (Proverbs 1:8-9). There seem to be several stages of appreciating fathers and what we think they know. We begin by thinking that Dad knows everything. Somewhere along the way, we begin to think that Dad knows nothing. Later, we grow to believe that we know more than Dad. Somewhere in young adulthood, we begin to realize that Dad knows a lot and it is tied to wisdom. Finally, we come to that point in life that we just wish Dad could tell us something again. Regardless of whether we intend to do so, we often develop to be much like our parents. We tend to carry with us many of the characteristics we would find in our fathers. Generally, that heritage of characteristics is considered a good thing. Still, it is more than the ordinary absorption of daily things that are to be considered. There is more. Did you hear the instruction of your father? A young man may love cars, sports, education, business, or some other active venue of life and profession because that is what he saw in his father. This question is pointed. It is about really hearing your fathers words. Did you listen to what he had to say? It is the instruction that a father is challenged to give his children that comprises the capstone of wise living. Falling into a profession simply because of exposure to it is a acceptable, but gaining the direction to use it well is found in the shared instruction. The Temptations song sadly states, Poppa was a rollin stone. Wherever he laid his had was his home. And when he died, all he left us was alone. If an example is all we have, then that is all we have. Generally, if we are willing to listen, there is more. We may not think about it, but fathers are intended to be teachers. Let them teach of righteous, good, and promise filled living. Listen to the instruction of your father. Russ

A Fathers Love
Romans 8:35-39
The words of the song encourage us, Come let us all unite to sing, God is love. I believe it and I hope that you do too. Still, the question remains. What does it mean that God is love? In spite of being obvious to many of us, Gods love has fallen on hard times. Frankly, it seems that love has fallen on hard times. For, the perception of love is that of a very limited relationship today. One of the many areas that need clarity, in these days, is that of the love of by a father. Perhaps you were fortunate enough to have a father who loved you in the most obvious ways. If that is the case, which I hope it is for most of us, then you already know something of a fathers love. Unfortunately, there are elements in our society and times that tend to diminish the role of a father and his love. We have a huge problem with fathers who are not present, who have left. We have a lot of fathers who live in the home, but are absent from the lives of their family to be involved in work or other activities. Even the depictions of fathers through television are less than character inspiring. It is time to set our sights higher. We can have better. I am not a critic of fathers. I think most of us do what we know and what we have seen. We are challenged to see and recognize something better; not as a criticism, but as an eye-opening realization of how blest we all are. You see, we can see and know the Fathers love. Russ
