The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.

STEWARDSHIP OF TIME
Fr. Peter, staff and deacons are looking for people who are interested in helping those members of the parish who are not able to attend Mass on a regular basis. Are you interested in helping with the Sunday Communion Services (Holy Communion Outside of Mass) at Beacon Hill and Lexington Square Retirement communities? We are looking for Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist (Communion ministers) and The Word (Lectors). We are seeking registered parish members who are willing to devote at least one hour of one Sunday of the month to a wonderful ministry. All dioceses in the country, including Joliet require the protecting Gods children class and background check to volunteer. The charter not only protects the children, but the vulnerable, which are the sick, in this case. Come help spread the Word and the Body of Christ, to our fellow members of Christ the King Parish, who live in your communities. This is an opportunity to actively share your faith with those who are unable to come to Mass on a weekly basis. We also welcome those who have never been extraordinary ministers, to inquire about serving as a minister. Thank you in advance for prayerfully considering this ministry opportunity. To begin the process of volunteering, you will meet with Eileen. Please contact Eileen at the rectory office. Then after, you will meet with Fr. Peter. We look forward to your response. If you would like to meet with us, to first prayerfully discern, please contact our deacons or Fr. Peter

A Fortnight of Prayer for Freedom: June 21July 4, 2012 Prepared for the people of the Diocese of Joliet in Illinois
Day 1: Thursday, June 21, 2012 Please read Romans 3:21-26 Brothers and sisters: Now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, though testified to by the law and the prophets, the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction; all have sinned and are deprived of the glory of God. They are justified freely by his grace through the redemption in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as an expiation, through faith, by his Blood, to prove his righteousness because of the forgiveness of sins previously committed, through the forbearance of God- to prove his righteousness in the present time, that he might be righteous and justify the one who has faith in Jesus. Day 2: Friday, June 22, 2012 Sts. John Fisher, Bishop, and Thomas More, Martyrs Let us pray: O God, martyrdom have brought true faith to its highest expression, graciously grant that, strengthened through the intercession of Saints John Fisher and Thomas More, we may confirm by the witness of our life the faith we profess with our lips. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Day 3: Saturday, June 23, 2012 Vigil of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist Grant, we pray, almighty God, that your family may walk in the way of salvation and, attentive to what St. John the Precursor urged, may come safely to the One he foretold, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. Day 4: Sunday, June 24, 2012 The Nativity of St. John the Baptist, Solemnity Like St. John, we are born to proclaim in word and work who Jesus is and the impact that Christ has over all of life. Psalm 63: O God, you are my God- for you I long! For you my body yearns; for you my soul thirsts, Like a land parched, lifeless, and without water. So I look to you in the sanctuary to see your power and glory. For your love is better than life; my lips offer you worship! I will bless you as long as I live; I will lift up my hands calling on your name. My soul shall savor the rich banquet of praise, with joyous lips my mouth shall honor you! When I think of you upon my bed, through the night watches I will recall that you indeed are my help, and in the shadow of your wings I shout for joy. My soul clings fast to you; your right hand upholds me. But those who seek my life will come to ruin; they shall go down to the depth of the earth! They shall be handed over to the sword and become the prey of jackals! But the king shall rejoice in God; all who swear by the Lord shall exult, for the mouths of liars will be shut! Let us pray: O God, who raised up Saint John the Baptist to make ready a nation fit for Christ the Lord, give your people, we pray, the grace of spiritual joys and direct the hearts of all the faithful into the way of salvation and peace. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer in Defense of Marriage

God our Father, we give you thanks for the gift of marriage: the bond of life and love, and the font of the family. The love of husband and wife enriches your Church with children, fills the world with a multitude of spiritual fruitfulness and service, and is the sign of the love of your Son, Jesus Christ, for his Church. The grace of Jesus flowed forth at Cana at the request of the Blessed Mother. May your Son, through the intercession of Mary, pour out upon us a new measure of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit as we join with all people of good will to promote and protect the unique beauty of marriage. May your Holy Spirit enlighten our society to treasure the heroic love of husband and wife, and guide our leaders to sustain and protect the singular place of mothers and fathers in the lives of their children. Father, we ask that our prayers be joined to those of the Virgin Mary, that your Word may transform our service so as to safeguard the incomparable splendor of marriage. We ask all these things through Christ our Lord, Amen. Saints Joachim and Anne, pray for us.

From the Bishop

Crime and Punishment

ord, punish me no more in your anger. Foul and festering are my sores. I am stooped and deeply bowed; All day I go about mourning.
These words of Psalm 38 capture how I feel most days about the scandal of child abuse in the Church. They probably express how many Catholics feel about it. Its shame and sorrow weigh on us. I started listening to the stories of victims more than 20 years ago as an official of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. My first meeting, as a bishop-elect, with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops was in Dallas in June, 2002, when the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People was hammered out, after the U.S. Church had been hammered by the horrible news coming from Boston and elsewhere. Today I chair the bishops Committee on the Protection of Children and Young People. The sense of responsibility for dealing with the issue is never far from my mind and heart. That is minor compared with those who have been abused. The extent of harm done to them is hard to fathom. So often, even they do not comprehend it, or most of it, until much later in life. Some of them, by Gods grace and the help of professionals, family and friends make progress toward healing and wholeness. Others keep struggling. The same is true of their family members. Some offenders have acknowledged their guilt and taken steps to guard against further abuse. Others live in

denial and remain angry with their accusers. Priests who have not offended accept the gravity of the situation and contribute personally and institutionally to creating a safe environment for children and vulnerable adults. At the same time, almost all of them feel a diminishment because of what their peers have done and wonder how they themselves are perceived by other people. The rest of the Churchs members have been less directly affected perhaps by the abuse, but they have not escaped its damage. From what I can tell and various surveys confirm it their attitudes cover a wide range. Clearly, though, there is still substantial anger and hurt. As a pastor, I keep asking myself this question: Is there anything that can be done to bring about a general healing of the Church? Lord, punish us no more. So much has been accomplished since Dallas and the Charter. We do better at listening to victim/ survivors of abuse and supporting them in their process of healing. We require a more extensive background review of prospective seminarians and do a much more thorough job with their personal formation while in the seminary. All other adults who work regularly with minors are checked, as well, and receive training to provide safe environments for young people. As a result, thousands of people across the country have been barred from access to children in our churches and schools. Abuse allegations are reported promptly to civil authorities. Dioceses have review boards to provide advice about policies and cases, and they undergo annual, external audits of their compliance with the Charter. Yet, all of that is not enough to

resolve the bitterness, skepticism and confusion that so many people still experience. They continue to ask how priests could betray their solemn trust. They wonder how some bishops could have failed to handle cases in a way that put the safety of children first, and why those bishops have not been held to account. They refuse to believe that anything has really changed. Thus, there is no easy answer to my question about general healing for the Church. The wound is so deep. Part of the answer is continued commitment to the provisions of the Charter and the spirit behind it. Part of the answer is time. Part of the answer is prayer. The 10th anniversary of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People occurs this month. To mark the anniversary, each parish in the Diocese of Joliet will hold a Holy Hour devoted to prayer for reconciliation and recommitment to the protection of children on June 10, the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi). Our Lord gave us the Eucharist as the living memorial of His saving death and resurrection. Ultimately only He can bring real healing to the Church, which is His body, and to each of its hurting members. So I encourage you to participate in the Holy Hour in your parish no matter how you feel. Psalm 38 ends this way: My God, be not far from me. Come quickly to help me, my Lord and my salvation. WHY CONSCIENCE IS IMPORTANT

During the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s, Americans shone the light of the Gospel on a dark history of slavery, segregation, and racial bigotry. The civil rights movement was an essentially religious movement, a call to awaken consciences. In his famous Letter from Birmingham Jail in 1963, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. boldly said, The goal of America is freedom. As a Christian pastor, he argued that to call America to the full measure of that freedom was the specific contribution Christians are obliged to make. He rooted his legal and constitutional arguments about justice in the long Christian tradition: I would agree with Saint Augustine that An unjust law is no law at all. A just law is a man-made code that squares with the moral law or the law of God. An unjust law is a code that is out of harmony with the moral law. Some unjust laws impose such injustices on individuals and organizations that disobeying the laws may be justified. Every effort must be made to repeal them. When fundamental human goods, such as the right of conscience, are at stake, we may need to witness to the truth by resisting the law and incurring its penalties. The church does not ask for special treatment, simply the rights of religious freedom for all citizens. Rev. King also explained that the church is neither the master nor the servant of the state, but its conscience, guide, and critic. Catholics and many other Americans have strongly criticized the recent Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) mandate requiring almost all private health plans to cover contraception, sterilization and abortioninducing drugs. For the first time in our history, the federal government will force religious institutions to fund and facilitate coverage of a drug or procedure contrary to their moral teaching, and purport to define which religious institutions are religious enough to merit an exemption. This is a matter of whether religious people and institutions may be forced by the government to provide such coverage even when it violates our consciences. What we ask is nothing more than the right to follow our consciences as we live out our teaching. This right is not only about our ability to go to Mass on Sunday or pray the Rosary at home. It is about whether we can make our contribution to the common good of all Americans. Can we do the good works our faith calls us to do, without having to compromise that very same faith? Without religious liberty properly understood, all Americans suffer, deprived of the essential contribution in education, health care, feeding the hungry, civil rights, and social services that religious Americans make every day. What is at stake is whether America will continue to have a free, creative, and robust civil societyor whether the state alone will determine who gets to contribute to the common good, and how they get to do it.
