Course Overview: The course aims to introduce to the students the understanding of designing electric power distribution systems. Course Objectives: At the end of this course, each student is expected to be able to understand 1. The load characteristics and its applications to distribution systems. 2. The types of distribution systems. 3. Distribution transformers and determination their sizes. 4. The types of underground cables 5. Calculations of voltage drop and power losses. 6. Design criterion of distribution feeders. 7. Reactive power compensation and Power factor correction.

8. Voltage dip due to motor starting. 9. Selection and co-ordination of low voltage protective devices. 10. Power quality problems & solutions. 11. Work in teams to perform the class design project. Course Outcomes: a. an ability to apply knowledge of math, science and engineering This course covers topics related to power system distribution design, power factor correction and protection. Therefore, students apply knowledge of math, science and engineering in learning and solving problems related to the above topics. c. an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs. In the class project the students are required to design a distribution system for a residential area or an industrial plant to meet certain desired requirements. g. an ability to communicate effectively Students are encouraged to participate in the discussions raised during the class. Students are assigned to write a portion of their class project report and also give oral presentation. This is intended to contribute to students communication abilities and skills. k. an ability to use the techniques, skills and modern engineering tools The students in this course are using power system analysis software packages to complete their assignments and their design project. The students are also utilizing the web to obtain a supplemental source of research material. Prerequisites: ELEC 321 Power System Analysis. Textbook Required: Power Distribution System Engineering by Gonen, 2nd Edition, CRC Press, Taylor &Francis Group, 2008. Supplementary Materials: 1. Industrial Power Distribution by Fehr, Prentice Hall 2002. 2. Electric Power Distribution and Transmission by Faulkenberry and Coffer, Prentice Hall 1996 3. Class Handouts Software Requirements: EDSA professional power system analysis software (probably Matlab) Topics Covered: Topics 1. Load characteristics and applications 2. Types of distribution networks 3. Voltage drop, voltage regulation and power losses 4. Voltage dip due to motor starting 5. Underground cables 6. Design criterion of cables (feeders) selection 7. Reactive power compensation and power factor improvement 8. Low voltage protective devices (C.Bs and fuses) and co-ordination 9. Power quality problems 10. Methods of Instruction 1. 2. 3. 4. Lecture. Homework & assignments. Project. Reading current literature related to power distribution systems design.

Grading Policy Homework: 10%. (Late submissions results in the loss of 20% of the mark per day). Quizzes: 10%. Midterm Exam: 20%. Project 20% Final Exam: 40%. Course Ground Rules Cheating & plagiarism: University rules will be enforced in case of cheating and plagiarism. Punctuality: we need to start on time. No one should be more than 5 minutes late. Courtesy: switch off mobile phones during lecture time, pay utmost attention to lecture. Attendance: University attendance policies will be enforced. Participation: effective participation is expected. Communication: email is most convenient. Collaboration in solving assignments is okay but merely copying answers is not. Learn how to use blackboard. We will use it to post announcements, lecture notes, handouts, etc. Course announcements will be in class and/or through blackboard. Students are responsible for following up with these. Students must use the assigned university e-mail address rather than a personal e-mail address. Students should address technical problems immediately

Declaration This syllabus and contents are subject to changes in the event of extenuating circumstances. The instructor/head of the department reserve the right to make changes as necessary. If changes are necessitated during the term of the course, the students will be notified by email communication and posting the notification on the department bulletin board. It is students responsibility to check on announcements made while they were absent.
