3.AERONAUTICAL ENGINEERING OR AEROSPACE ENGINEERING

CODE OF COLLEGES IN KERALA 1.JCE 2.MZC Aerospace engineering is the branch of engineering behind the design, construction and science of aircraft and spacecraft. Aerospace engineering has broken into two major branches: aeronautical engineering and astronautical engineering. The former deals with craft that stay within Earth's atmosphere, and the latter deals with craft that operate outside of Earth's atmosphere. While "aeronautical" was the original term, the broader "aerospace" has superseded it in usage, as flight technology advanced to include craft operating in outer space. Modern flight vehicles undergo severe conditions such as differences in atmospheric pressure and temperature, or heavy structural load applied upon vehicle components. Consequently, they are usually the products of various technologies including aerodynamics, avionics, materials science and propulsion. These technologies are collectively known as aerospace engineering. Because of the complexity of the field, aerospace engineering is conducted by a team of engineers, each specializing in their own branches of science. The development and manufacturing of a flight vehicle demands careful balance and compromise between abilities, performance, available technology and costs. List of aerospace engineering topics Fluid mechanics - the study of fluid flow around objects. Specifically aerodynamics concerning the flow of air over bodies such as wings or through objects such as wind tunnels (see also lift and aeronautics). Astrodynamics - the study of orbital mechanics including prediction of orbital elements when given a select few variables. While few schools in the United States teach this at the undergraduate level, several have graduate programs covering this topic (usually in conjunction with the

Physics department of said college or university). Statics and Dynamics (engineering mechanics) - the study of movement, forces, moments in mechanical systems. Mathematics - because aerospace engineering heavily involves mathematics. Electrotechnology - the study of electronics within engineering. Propulsion - the energy to move a vehicle through the air (or in outer space) is provided by internal combustion engines, jet engines and turbomachinery, or rockets (see also propeller and spacecraft propulsion). A more recent addition to this module is electric propulsion and ion propulsion. Control engineering - the study of mathematical modeling of the dynamic behavior of systems and designing them, usually using feedback signals, so that their dynamic behavior is desirable (stable, without large excursions, with minimum error). This applies to the dynamic behavior of aircraft, spacecraft, propulsion systems, and subsystems that exist on aerospace vehicles. Aircraft structures - design of the physical configuration of the craft to withstand the forces encountered during flight. Aerospace engineering aims to keep structures lightweight. Materials science - related to structures, aerospace engineering also studies the materials of which the aerospace structures are to be built. New materials with very specific properties are invented, or existing ones are modified to improve their performance. Solid mechanics - Closely related to material science is solid mechanics which deals with stress and strain analysis of the components of the vehicle. Nowadays there are several Finite Element programs such as MSC Patran/Nastran which aid engineers in the analytical process. Aeroelasticity - the interaction of aerodynamic forces and structural flexibility, potentially causing flutter, divergence, etc. Avionics - the design and programming of computer systems on board an aircraft or spacecraft and the simulation of systems. Risk and reliability - the study of risk and reliability assessment techniques and the mathematics involved in the quantitative methods. Noise control - the study of the mechanics of sound transfer. Flight test - designing and executing flight test programs in order to gather and analyze performance and handling qualities data in order to determine if an aircraft meets its design and performance goals and certification requirements. The basis of most of these elements lies in theoretical mathematics, such

as fluid dynamics for aerodynamics or the equations of motion for flight dynamics. However, there is also a large empirical component. Historically, this empirical component was derived from testing of scale models and prototypes, either in wind tunnels or in the free atmosphere. More recently, advances in computing have enabled the use of computational fluid dynamics to simulate the behavior of fluid, reducing

6.BIOTECHNOLOGY

CODE OF COLLEGES IN KERALA 1.SCT,2.MCT,3.MET,4.SBC

The science of Biotechnology came into existence in 1960s when scientists unravelled the mystery of RNAs and DNAs basic genetic material, and serious research began in the area of understanding and mapping of human genes. Initially, the term Biotechnology (abbreviated as Biotech) was loosely applied to technologies and organisations engaged in mapping the human genes. The main objective of this stream of science is to improve human health by understanding the functioning of genes and modifying them towards building healthier bodies. Biotechnology can be defined as the application of all natural sciences and engineering in the direct or indirect use of living organisms or parts of organisms in the production of goods and services and/ or to improve existing industrial processes. In other words, biotechnology can also be defined as the technology that relies on living organisms biological systems. Biotechnology is not a single technology but a collection of new technologies bound by a common thread. They all use living cells and the molecules within them to make new products, or improve existing products. Major techniques of biotechnology include genetic engineering, monoclonal antibody technologies drawn from genetics, immunology, biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology and other life sciences. Biotechnology is finding increasing application in diverse

areas. Today, biotechnology is being used in a wide range of business whose aim is to understand, alter, or direct the function of a wide set of organic cells, including plants, animals and humans. Modern Biotechnology is now being used to produce drugs, develop new therapies and diagnostics in medicine and grow better, healthier and tastier foods. 2 CLASSIFICATION OF BIOTECHNOLOGY Broadly, biotechnology can be classified into (i) Conventional Biotechnology and (ii) Modern Biotechnology. CONVENTIONAL BIOTECHNOLOGY Conventional Biotechnology refers to the technique that uses living organisms or parts of an organisms to make or modify products, improve plant or animal productivity or to develop micro organisms for specific uses. Natural fermentation process used for brewing, bread-making, cheese making, etc. and other similar processes used for production of antibiotics, enzymes, etc. fall in the category of Conventional Biotechnology. MODERN BIOTECHNOLOGY Modern biotechnology relies on the use of cellular processes like recombinant DNA (rDNA), gene transfer, embryo manipulation and its transfer, plant regeneration, tissue culture, monoclonal antibodies and bioprocess engineering, protein engineering and structure based molecular design to solve problems and make products. Modern biotechnology is also referred to as Gene Technology. Modern biotechnology is considered as an enabling tool for scientific innovations to improve human, agriculture and environmental conditions worldwide. APPLICATION BASED CLASSIFICATION Based on applications, biotechnology can be classified into a. b. c. d. Healthcare Biotechnology Agriculture Biotechnology Industrial Biotechnology Environmental Biotechnology.

a. Healthcare Biotechnology The healthcare/ pharmaceutical sector was the first to reap the benefits of biotechnology. Biotechnology in healthcare uses the human bodys own tools and weapons to fight disease. Biotechnology medicines and therapies use proteins, enzymes, antibodies and other substances naturally produced in the human body to fight infections and diseases, as well as to correct genetic disorders. Biotechnology also uses other living organisms plant and animal cells, viruses and

yeasts to assist in the large scale production of medicines for human use. Thus, biotechnology has made a major impact on discovery and synthesis of new drugs. Presently, 20% of the worlds pharmaceutical products are biotechnology based. It includes pharmaceuticals derived from fermentation and plant extract processes. The increasing importance of biotechnology in the pharmaceutical industry is reflected in the number of new molecular entities that are currently under development. These pharmaceuticals are expected to represent fifty percent of all the new drugs under test, by the turn of the century. There are four primary areas in health care in which biotechnology is currently being used : medicines, diagnostics, vaccines and gene therapy. According to the McKinsey study, Indian pharma industry is poised to grow to an innovation led US $25 billion industry by 2010 with a market capitalization of almost US $ 150 bn from the current US $ 5 bn generic based drug industry. The Vaccine Market which was a US $ 100 mn market in 2001 is growing at around 20%. In the biotherapeutics and diagnostics segment, Hep B dominates medical biotech vaccine segment, others include GCSF, EPO, and Interferon alpha 2b. The year 2003 is expected to witness the launch of Human Insulin, Streptokinase, other vaccines and diagnostics. Major players in biopharmaceutical industry are Shanta Biotech, Bharat Biotech, Biocon, Pfizer, Unilever, Dupont, Bayer, Eli Lilly Ranbaxy. b. Agriculture Biotechnology

Agriculture biotechnology (agribio) helps in improving food production to meet the demand of growing world population, while reducing negative environment impacts. Foods produced through Genetically Modified (GM) seed are more nutritious and have high stability under different environment. Research on transgenic crops as with conventional plant breeding and selection by farmers, aims selectively to alter, add or remove a character of choice in a plant, bearing in mind regional needs and opportunities. Transgenic plants having important traits such as pests and herbicide resistance are essential where no inherent resistance has been demonstrated within the local species. There is intense research on development of Genetically Modified Crops having resistance to viral, bacterial and fungal diseases; modification of plant architecture (e.g. height) and development of new varieties (e.g. early or late flowering or seed production); and tolerance to abiotic stresses (e.g. salinity and drought). The benefits from transgenic plants include increased flexibility in crops management, decreased dependency on chemical insecticides and soil disturbance, enhanced yields, easier harvesting and higher proportion of the crop available for trading. Besides GM Crops, agribio sector also includes Biopesticides, Biofertilizers and plant extraction. Biopesticide products are based on natural agents like microorganisms and fatty acid compounds. They are toxic only to the targeted pests and do not harm humans, animals, fish, birds and beneficial insects. Besides,

as they act in unique ways, biopesticides can control pest population that has developed tolerance to chemical pesticides. Plant extracts are plant-derived materials or preparations that contain raw or processed ingredients from plants and have medicinal/ aromatic/ nutritive value. Often, these have commercial applications. The sector is being driven by the rising desire to use Natural products and increasing awareness about the side effects of chemical based products. India being the second largest food producer after China offers a huge market for agribiotech products. This, combined with excellent scientific infrastructure in agriculture, rich biodiversity and skilled and low cost human-power, make India a force to reckon with. Transgenics of rice, brassica, moonbean, pigeonpea, cotton, tomato, and some vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower etc. are expected to complete field assessment and some of these would be ready for large scale production by 2005. More protein rich wheat with a higher lysine content is likely to be introduced in the farmers field by 2003-2005. Neutraceuticals market has grown to INR25000 30000 mn (US $ 532 638 mn). Genetically engineered seed market segment has grabbed almost fifty per cent of total seed market worth US $ 500 mn in 2001. Marine resource development and aqua culture also hold a great potential for India as its coastline covers 8000 km including Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshwadeep. c. Industrial Biotech

Industrial biotechnology involves use of microorganisms and their enzyme preparation as biocatalysts to perform complex fermentation process or chiral bioconversion reactions, yielding a wide range of bulk and fine chemicals, food, agro and health sector products. It is anticipated that industrial biotechnology will play a similar role for industrial development in the 21st century as chemistry has in the twentieth century. The biocatalyst approach can be leveraged from living systems and transferred to variety of manufacturing processes. Enzymes such as lipases, proteases, cellulases and amylases can be substituted for both noxious and high temperature, high- energy chemicals. This approach can be applied to a wide range of manufacturing areas such as grain processing, production of detergents, starches and textiles. Enterprises involved in industrial biotechnology are constantly striving to discover and develop high value enzymes and bioactive compounds that will enhance current industrial processes. This segment is expected to show growth in line with overall growth of the Biotech sector. d. Environmental Biotechnology

Environmental biotechnology implies application of biotechnology to the management of environmental problems, including waste treatment and pollution control and their integration with non-biological technologies. This sector encompasses environmental monitoring, restoration of environmental quality,

7.CIVIL ENGINEERING
CODE OF COLLEGES IN KERALA ALMOST ALL ENGINEERING COLLEGES IN KERALA

civil engineering, the profession of designing and executing structural works that serve the general public. The term was first used in the 18th century to distinguish the newly recognized profession from military engineering, until then preeminent. From earliest times, however, engineers have engaged in peaceful activities, and many of the civil engineering works of ancient and medieval timessuch as the Roman public baths, roads, bridges, and aqueducts; the Flemish canals; the Dutch sea defenses; the French Gothic cathedrals; and many other monumentsreveal a history of inventive genius and persistent experimentation. History Table Of Contents The beginnings of civil engineering as a separate discipline may be seen in the foundation in France in 1716 of the Bridge and Highway Corps, out of which in 1747 grew the cole Nationale des Ponts et Chausses (National School of Bridges and Highways). Its teachers

wrote books that became standard works on the mechanics of materials, machines, and hydraulics, and leading British engineers learned French to read them. As design and calculation replaced rule of thumb andempirical formulas, and as expert knowledge was codified and formulated, the nonmilitary engineer moved to the front of the stage. Talented, if often self-taught, craftsmen, stonemasons, millwrights, toolmakers, and instrument makers became civil engineers. In Britain, James Brindley began as a millwright and became the foremost canal builder of the century; John Rennie was a millwrights apprentice who eventually built the new London Bridge; Thomas Telford, a stonemason, became Britains leading road builder. John Smeaton, the first man to call himself a civil engineer, began as an instrument maker. His design of Eddystone Lighthouse (175659), with its interlocking masonry, was based on a craftsmans experience. Smeatons work was backed by thorough research, and his services were much in demand. In 1771 he founded the Society of Civil Engineers (now known as the Smeatonian Society). Its object was to bring together experienced engineers, entrepreneurs, and lawyers to promote the building of large public works, such as canals (and later railways), and to secure the parliamentary powers necessary to execute their schemes. Their meetings were held during parliamentary sessions; the society follows this custom to this day. The cole Polytechnique was founded in Paris in 1794, and the Bauakademie was started in Berlin in 1799, but no such schools existed in Great Britain for another two decades. It was this lack of opportunity for scientific study and for the exchange of experiences that led a group of young men in 1818 to found the Institution of Civil Engineers. The founders were keen to learn from one another and from their elders, and in 1820 they invited Thomas Telford, by then the dean of British civil engineers, to be their first president. There were similar developments elsewhere. By the mid-19th century there were civil engineering societies in many European countries and the United States, and the following century produced similar institutions in almost every country in the world. Formal education in engineering science became widely available as other countries followed the lead of France and Germany. In Great Britain the universities, traditionally seats of classical learning, were reluctant to embrace the new disciplines. University College, London, founded in 1826, provided a broad range of academic studies and offered a course in mechanical philosophy. Kings College, London, first taught civil engineering in 1838, and in 1840 Queen Victoria founded the first chair of civil engineering and mechanics at the University of Glasgow, Scot. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, founded in 1824, offered the first courses in civil engineering in the United States. The number of universities throughout the world with engineering faculties, including civil engineering, increased rapidly in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Civil engineering today is taught in universities on every continent. Civil engineering functions Table Of Contents The functions of the civil engineer can be divided into three categories: those performed before construction (feasibility studies, site investigations, and design), those performed during construction (dealing with clients, consulting engineers, and contractors), and those performed after construction (maintenance and research).

Feasibility studies No major project today is started without an extensive study of the objective and without preliminary studies of possible plans leading to a recommended scheme, perhaps with alternatives. Feasibility studies may cover alternative methodse.g., bridge versus tunnel, in the case of a water crossingor, once the method is decided, the choice of route. Both economic and engineering problems must be considered. Site investigations A preliminary site investigation is part of the feasibility study, but once a plan has been adopted a more extensive investigation is usually imperative. Money spent in a rigorous study of ground and substructure may save large sums later in remedial works or in changes made necessary in constructional methods. Since the load-bearing qualities and stability of the ground are such important factors in any large-scale construction, it is surprising that a serious study of soil mechanics did not develop until the mid-1930s. Karl von Terzaghi, the chief founder of the science, gives the date of its birth as 1936, when the First International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering was held atHarvard University and an international society was formed. Today there are specialist societies and journals in many countries, and most universities that have a civil engineering faculty have courses in soil mechanics.

8.CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

CODE OF COLLEGES IN KERALA 1.GOVT.ENGINEERING COLLEGE THRISSUR 2.TKM Believe it or not, the chemical engineering education and other types of engineering education degree must be change or revolutionize. This is pretty much simple due to Globalization! While technological and social progress depends on the efforts of many different individuals from many professions, chemical engineers are usually at the center of such progress. Chemical engineers create the structures, basis, technologies, process and products that revolutionize the way people do things and improve the way people live.

Page 15

2012

Since the nature of whatchemical engineers do continues to progress just as quickly as the technologies they develop, the way in which educators teach potentialchemical engineers must continue to progress as well. Even though most chemical engineers laboured for five to seven years getting their degrees, many are finding it helpful to attend top online schoolsin the middle of their careers to supplement their education with new information (An example is the SPACE program offered by the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) to those who are in the middle of their career). Further, various parties hold that the current methodologies and approaches of engineering education need to be updated. It makes no sense to prepare engineers to solve the problems of the 21st century by teaching them the same things they were taught in the 20th century.

Long distance learning is now popular to get a degree. One of the principal continuing developments for which engineering studentsmust prepare for is globalization. Due largely to the efforts of chemical engineers themselves, the world is becoming increasingly connected, both through communications and transportation. Internet access continues to broaden and the functionality of Internet-based technologies continues to deepen. Extensive transportation networks,

Page 16

A 2 Z DETAILS ABOUT ENGINEERING BRANCHES

2012

cheaper and more efficient public transportation, and increasingly efficient transportation technologies continue to bring people together and make markets more interconnected than ever. For this reason, chemical engineers must be prepared to compete on a global scale. They must be able to vie for employment wherever it exists, especially in the more rapidly developing economies, and they must be able to help employers apply engineering solutions on a global scale.

Some of the impediments to progress in the field of chemical engineering education lie in academias inability to apply the very interconnectedness that it is trying to instill in its students. Affected by feelings of unnecessary competition and jealousy, educators do not collaborate to the degree that modern communications technologies have already made possible. To fulfill their mandate, educators must tear down these synthetic walls and be an example of that which they intend to instill in students. Engineering professors, researchers, and teachers must learn to work together in concerted efforts within their respective institutions as well as across institutional and international boundaries. This necessity is particularly evident in the fact that, as technologies continue to improve, a higher degree of specialization will necessarily arise, and such specialization always requires collaboration. A good example has been shown by a professor who lecture Matlab software and uploaded his lecture in youtube. Here is the link. As a result, not only his student can learn but others can learn as well. Yep, that include myself who is presently working hard to understand some parts of Matlab to solve my nonlinear simultaneous equation.

The fact of increasing globalization and the growing prominence of new economic powers has important implications not only to how engineers must learn, but also what they must learn. Currently, the lingua franca for business and academia across the world is English. For this reason, chemical engineers in English-speaking countries rarely see the need to learn other languages, and engineers in other countries frequently go to great pains to learn English.

However, according to one British Council report, the prominence of English as the global language is actually waning. Mandarin Chinese will remain the most widely spoken language in the world for the foreseeable future, and as China becomes wealthier and more educated, its sphere of international influence will expand. English, on the other hand, will most likely be soon overtaken by Spanish. To compete in the job market and contribute to society in the most efficient ways, engineers must learn languages other than English. For this reason, chemical engineering

Page 17

2012

programs must advocate and require language education as part of the core curriculum.

The field of chemical engineering is undergoing significant change, and it will continue to do so. Rather than standing as inhibitors to change, educational institutions must become the bellwethers of a new age. Only by recognizing the merits and the necessity of globalization and increased connectivity can engineering programs provide their students with the tools necessary to do that which they intended to do by deciding to study engineering.

This branch of engineering also involves applied areas of Maths and science, electrical and electronics theory, materials engineering and programming fundamentals.Computer science and engineering students will learn about basic engineering techniques, as other engineering students, during first year course. These techniques include Engineering Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, and Engineering drawing. From second year they are exposed to core computer science subjects like programming, data structures, Digital logic, Theoretical computer science, Algorithms, Computer networks, Operating systems, Web technologies, Databases and Computer Architecture are few to mention.CSE is related with invention and development of software and hardware. This is really an excellent field to have opportunities both in software companies and higher studies. As computing is extensively applied to almost every walk of life it created massive jobs for CSE students. On the same time more demand and application kept it research funding alive attracting many students to opt for higher studies. Computer Science Engineering V/s Information Technology CSE v/s IT is always a debateable issue. But there is no big difference & both are the overlapping disiplenes with most of the similar subject of study. CSE is related with invention and development of of software and hardware whereas IT is related with effective use of already avaialble software/hardware. CSE thinks about how can a new system be developed whereas IT thinks that how can an alredy available system be put for gainful commericial use. While implementing certain tasks, the CSE ask question about working of hardware & software but IT want ot know about the working of office and business systems so that it can modify, improve and educate you to use existing software/hardware. When you produce the system that control the Rockets,Machines,DVD's,Medical digonastic instruments etc. that is called CSE and when you learn to improve , implement and manage the given sytem that is called IT. Computer Science is a subject in general dealing with computer hardware software. IT is a derived subject which is mainly involved in the management of inforamtion using computers.

Computer science (academically, CS, CSC or compsci) encompasses a variety of topics that relates to computation, like abstract analysis of algorithms, formal

grammars, and subjects such as programming languages, program design, software and computer hardware. . Computer scientists study what programs can and cannot do , how programs can efficiently perform specific tasks ( algorithms and complexity), how programs should store and retrieve specific kinds of information ( data structures and databases), how programs might behave intelligently ( artificial intelligence), and how programs and people should communicate with each other ( human-computer interaction and user interfaces).. Good for jobs like software engineering, hardware engineering, computer science professor, programmer, etc.

While Information technology (IT) is the technology required for information processing. In particular the use of electronic computers and computer software to convert, store, protect, process, transmit, and retrieve information from anywhere, anytime. This is really good for individuals who don't like math because it offer less math courses . You can get jobs such as database administrator, webmaster, programmer, software engineer, telecommunications, management, computer security analyst, etc.

The information technology course module has been designed with more of software part in the course whereas Computer Science includes more of computer hardware part like networking, chip level knowledge etc. Although some of the subjects are same in both the streams. Also CSE is more math intensive than IT.

Information Technology is the business side of computers - usually dealing with databases, business, and accounting. The cs engineering degree usually deals with how to build micro processors, how to write a compiler, and is usually more math intensive than IT. One way to think of it is one is dealing with information - data which would be the IT and the other is dealing with the "science" or "how to make it" of computers.

So there is very thin line dividing the two strems. There is a lot of overlap in the two streams. In every tough It problem, there is a cs problem. Scope of Computer Science Engineering in The Future This is really an excellent field to have opportunities both in software companies and higher studies. As computing is extensively applied to almost every walk of life it created massive jobs for Computer Engineering students. On the same time more demand and application kept it research funding alive attracting many students to opt for higher studies. This is the biggest question in front of everybody now a days while deciding the admission in the Engineering. As we will progress the scope of computer will only increase, there is no change of getting decrease of that. This recession only will come as an advantage for future generations because at the time of recession companies think new technologies as per the need. So it seems that the use of computer is decreasing but in actual practice the use of computers will increase in coming years and recession will play a important role in this scenario. Being in recession people will come up with cheap software solution for large Industries as well as small scale industry. These demands will make the usage of computer even in the small countries of the world and We will be more self dependent and work towards the progress of Nation. Computer science and engineering students will learn about basic engineering techniques, as other engineering students, during first year course. These techniques include Engineering Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, and Engineering drawing. fields.[2] The term in its modern sense first appeared in a 1958 article published in the Harvard Business Review, in which authors Leavitt and Whisler commented that "the new technology does not yet have a single established name. We shall call it information technology (IT)."[3] Some of the modern and emerging fields of Information technology are next generation web technologies, bioinformatics, cloud computing, global information systems, large scale knowledge bases, etc. Advancements are mainly driven in the field of computer science. he World has entered the new millennium, which is going to be an Information Technology Age. Today Computers have not only assumed strategic importance in the corporate world, they are being effectively used in other fields ranging from space exploration to food processing and banking to communication etc. In this era of Information Technology, which has revolutionised the whole world, INDIA has stood to the world standards and is being regarded the World over for it's skilled IT Professionals. Even the government has recognised the promising future of this industry and has formed a new IT Ministry which will give a boost to this industry. Presence of Multinationals like IBM, HP has made possible transfer of hardware technology into the country, Internet has further bridged the time gap ensuring arrival of the latest technology simultaneously in INDIA and the West without delay. The domestic hardware industry has witnessed quantum growth in the turnover and profits, which is largely attributable to our liberalized economy. On the software front various software giants like IBM, Motorola, Oracle, Samsung, HP, Digital, Unisys, AT&T, ICL, Fugitsu etc. have opened software development centres in the country. The number of professionals in this industry is believed to have crossed the 2 lakh mark and still there is a huge gap between the demand and supply of professionals which is an encouraging sign. The US alone requires around 3 lakh professionals, leave aside other countries. It is believed around 65% of the world's software is produced in INDIA. INDIA is also exporting software to around 100 countries including many countries which are exclusive buyers from INDIA. Many Indian IT companies like Infosys, Wipro, NIIT, Zenith computers, Satyam Computers, STG, Pentafore Software, Mastek etc. are expanding themselves in a big way making their presence felt globally. The phenomenal growth which this industry is witnessing has lead to it being recognised as one of the highly paid industry. As this industry is young, the average age of professionals is lower than any other industry. The availability of skilled, qualified professionals is hardly able to meet the requirement, leaving a large gap to be filled by those with ambition, aptitude and willingness to work hard. Nature of Work There are two main sectors in this field: Hardware: This includes the physical elements of the computer system and deals with the designing, manufacturing and maintenance of computers. This area also includes the assembling of the manufactured components of the computers. Software: This includes the set of instructions by which a computer is programmed for working and performing the specified tasks. This realm includes the work of designing the programs for various purposes. Programs may be for controlling the functioning of the computers or they may also be some user-friendly programs for specific needs. The

Printing technology has become one of the major career options in today's media-driven world. The printing industry, though often allied with the publishing industry,is an autonomous industry as well. Often we do not realise how integral a part the printed word is, of our hectic lives. The print revolution started with the invention of printing by Johan Gutenberg in the fourteenth century. The great breakthrough for printing technology was the development of the high-speed steam printing press in 1830. A hundred years later, the rotary press emerged, thus making mass production possible. Gravure and letterpress were the basic forms that were used in first-generation printing. To date, there have been many refinements and additions to the technology - such as offset printing. In fact, most of the important developments before the arrival of computers were around the printing press. THE quality and speed of printing improved in the latter half of the twentieth century. Printing presses became sophisticated, and the level of automation increased. Technologies emerged for highquality colour separation and fourcolour printing. The rotary press started giving way to the web offset presses in the seventies. In the last 20 years, the electronic sophistry of printing presses has been increasing consistently. The latest presses are computer controlled and custom settings can automatically be made. They can also be operated remotely. "There is a dearth of skilled and trained people in the industry," feels Sandeep Vaidya of Alpha, a processing house in Mumbai."There is a tremendous scope for making a career here. I hire at least two freshers every year from the Institute of Printing Technology. But the turnout is always lesser than the requirement." The printing industry is a growing industry all over India. Mumbai alone has over five hundred printing houses and more than hundred processing houses. In addition to that are print shops belonging to publishing houses like The Times of India, Hindustan Times, Indian Express and the Free Press Journal that have state-of-the-art web offset machinery. There are book and magazine publishers like Popular Prakashan, Mauj Prakashan,Tata Press, et al. "Jobs have never been a problem and with publishing houses going for hi-tech equipment, demand for trained personnel has surely increased," says Prof Desai, Principal of Govt.Institute of Printing Technology, Mumbai. The minimum qualification to get into an institute that trains you in printing technology is SSC.Majority of the institutes (in Mumbai) offer three-year diploma courses in the subject after class ten. "There are many opportunities available for diploma holders in newspaper/ magazine publishing in printing houses, advertising agencies, packaging units, etc," says Prof Desai. "We personally conduct placement activities to ensure that each student has a job at the end of his education tenure with us." Job profiles in printing also vary from technical expert to manager or marketing personnel. Salaries start from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 in the beginning. In the electronic and multimedia environment, printing technology is redefining itself and this has opened up new areas of employment. If you want to get into an institute that imparts training in printing technology, the minimum requirement in class ten is 50 per cent for open category and 45 per cent for reserved category, with English, science and mathematics. Admission is on the basis of marks obtained in the SSC exam for diploma courses all over India. The duration varies from two to eight semesters that include on-job training at print shops or processing houses. "Majority of the courses, unfortunately, are diplomas," says Abhijit Pandit, technical consultant, Technova. Himself a graduate from Stuttgart's Printing School, Pandit feels that a proper degree course after class 12 will prove to be a better option in the long run.

Advertising agencies are another option open for printing technology students. Posts for production managers and similar designations are being advertised on major websites and papers. All require a qualification in printing. Ashish Arora,an HR consultant, feels that now is a boom time for trained personnel in printing and publishing."All ad agencies have become quality-conscious about the end product, thanks to MNCs and their standard benchmarks. This has increased the demand for people who understand the technicalities of the job. Therefore, having trained experts in the field has become a necessity. The same goes for print shops and processing houses. To be able to achieve the best quality, people who deliver the same have become important," he says.

Printing is a process for production of texts and images, particularly with ink on paper using a printing press. It is a large scale industrial process, and is an essential part of publishing and transaction printing. With the discovery of science and technology, computers, lasers and microprocessor, printing is no longer a craft. It is a multi-disciplinary profession, which deals with text and graphics to make a final print by transferring ink on paper or board or other materials. As a printing technologist, the vacancies for this post are available in newspapers and magazines, railway presses, advertising agencies, machine manufacturers, and in packaging industries. There is always an option to start you own printing press.
