1. (a) Elaborate on the forces that act on a space vehicle re-entering Earths atmosphere. (b) Dene Ballistic Coecient of a space vehicle. How is it useful in describing the motion of an object through the atmosphere, in terms of the acceleration or deceleration of the object? [8+8] 2. (a) Assume that the Earth station near the equator and the Earth station at a high latitude region are both observing distance variation of the same geo stationary satellite. How would these variations dier between these two Earth stations. (b) When walking on a circus tight rope, balance is achieved by stretching both the arms all way out by holding a long bar. Show that the stretched out arms or the bar correspond to a reaction wheel used in a zero momentum three axis stabilized satellite. [8+8] 3. Write short notes on the following related to solid rocket motor: (a) Erosive burning (c) Chung
(d) Hazard properties of solid propellants. 4. (a) What are the eects of charged particles on a satellite?

(b) List out the precautions that the astronaut should follow to avoid or minimize the damage due to radiation. [6+10] 5. Consider a multi-stage satellite launch vehicle for placing a satellite in an earth orbit. Illustrate the design considerations and operational sequences with the help of neat sketches. [16] 6. The position vector (R) and velocity vector (V ) of a satellite are R = 8228 i + 389.0 j + 6888 k km V = -0.7000 i + 6.600 j - 0.6000 k km/s (a) Determine the size and shape (semi-major axis and semi- minor axis) for this satellite (b) Determine the inclination of the orbit. 1 [16]
