Issue 13

the origins of narconon The Narconon programme was founded by William Benitez, an inmate of Arizona State prison, in 1966. Here in Mr Benitez own words, is how it all began After arriving at prison, a friend of mine gave me ... [a] book, Fundamentals of Thought, by L. Ron Hubbard.... [T]his small book impressed me more than anything else I had ever read before. I...... purchased additional books by Mr. Hubbard and studied them very carefully during the following year.......The material identified human abilities and their development. ....What impressed me the most about [Hubbards] materials was that they concentrated not only on identifying abilities, but also on methods (practical exercises) by which to develop them....I found that if a person rehabilitated and applied certain abilities, that person could persevere toward goals set, confront life, isolate problems and resolve them, communicate with life, be responsible and set ethical standards, and function within the band of certainty. I finally realised I had developed the essential abilities needed to overcome my drug problem. Feeling myself on safe ground, I knew I had to make this technology available to other addicts in the prison. I thought back over the years of all the junkies I had shot up with, and remembered their most treasured conversation, One of these days Im going to quit. I had found the means and was going to share it with them. So effective was the technology I had learned, that I experienced a freedom long lost to me...... Even back then, I knew Narconon would reach international proportions....... And so it did. William Benitez not only overcame his own heroin addiction using what he had learned from L Ron Hubbard, he helped many fellow inmates do the same. Over the next half century the programme expanded beyond the prison walls and now spans over a hundred groups and centres in more than 30 countries and is still growing. These were truly grass roots beginnings that from the outset embraced fundamentals that are the hallmark of Narconon to this day and which, in our view, make it unique in the field of drug rehabilitation: that, armed with a workable methodology, friend can help friend and the individual can help himself. All that is required is to make the know-how broadly and readily available.

Arming the People with Knowledge

Issue # 13 True to the traditions of its founding, the primary mission of Narconon is to arm people with the know-how of how to handle addiction. It is to make that know-how broadly available to any person of goodwill who wants to help himself and others. Given the scale of the drug problem and the urgent need to place a workable technology in the hands of all those who truly want to do something about it, a few experts dispensing wisdom expensively from lofty towers isnt going to cut it. The only workable approach is to do everything we can to make everybody an expert and then get them busy helping one another.
Training not Treatment The Narconon approach to addiction is that of training, not treatment. It does not seek to treat the person. Our approach is to discontinue drug use as comfortably as possible with our drug-free withdrawal method and then to arm the individual with know-how, to equip him with basic life skills that will place him in the driving seat of his own life, sufficiently empowered to make his own rational decisions and sufficiently educated as to avoid the traps that life can set for him . Self Help Withdrawal In keeping with that approach, the Narconon First Step programme has been developed. It teaches people our withdrawal method so that they can help a friend or loved one withdraw from drugs. Thus anyone a family member, friend, doctor, religious or community group or government officers - can learn how to get someone, or indeed many people, through drug withdrawal. By making this technology broadly available at grass roots level, we can arm the whole society with the ability to defeat the drugs menace. Narconon Manchester Provides Free training In line with our mission to make drug withdrawal know-how available at grass-roots level, Peter Dwan of Narconon Manchester is now providing free training seminars for anyone who wants to learn the Narconon drug-free withdrawal method. If you want to grab this opportunity for free training contact Peter right away. His email address is dwan0@btinternet.com or you can give him a call on 07824 398683. This project is a huge undertaking and may well place Manchester in the forefront of the crusade to rid the world of drugs.
