Bon Voyage Attica

As many of you may already know, Attica Scott, who has been the Director of Kentucky Jobs with Justice, as of February 29th, has moved on to fulfill her role on the Louisville Metro Council, representing District 1. On February 27th, we had a Bon Voyage Attica celebration. Many folks came out to celebrate with us as we wished Attica good tidings. It was an emotional day, as we took turns sharing our favorite Attica Memories while taking photos with the newly appointed Councilwoman! Here at Kentucky Jobs with Justice, we are extremely proud of Attica for her appointment to Metro Council. We are also grateful for the 7 1/2 years of work as Director. Under Atticas leadership, Kentucky Jobs with Justice was able to achieve many tremendous goals, preparing us for the fight work economic justice and workers rights in 2012 and beyond!

Bank Vs. America: Showdown in Charlotte

On May 9th, Kentucky Jobs with Justice, along with Jobs with Justice coalitions from across the Nation, gathered with several community organizations to bring our voices directly to the Bank of Americas Annual Shareholders Meeting in Downtown Charlotte.

Building Jobs with Justice Leadership Training

Kentucky Jobs with Justice sent our new Director, Flaco, to Oviedo, Florida from March 22-25 to take part in the national, Building Jobs with Justice Leadership Training. Having Flaco away for almost a week soon after assuming the role of Director was well worth it in terms of the amazing skill sets and trainings that he returned with. We are building for 2013 and beyond!

MLK, Jr. Service Learning Day 2012

On the birth date of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Kentucky Jobs with Justice participated in the University of Louisvilles MLK, Jr. Service Learning Day. Students could sign up to volunteer for a few hours of volunteer service, in honor of Dr. King, Jr. We had four great volunteers who came to give back to the community, to learn about social justice and how we fight for that here at KY JwJ, and to also learn how Dr. King, Jr. plays a vital role in the work that we do!

As shareholders have spent the week being wined and dined, we are losing our homes, our jobs, and our future, Sarita Gupta, Executive Director of National Jobs with Justice, to the crowd of approximately 2,100 folks. We were there for one reason: to draw the line in the sand for the Bank of America! From now on, it will be Bank vs. America! The Bank of America leads the pack of the 1% on three main issues that we will no longer tolerate in America: 1. foreclosing on the homes of working families, 2. Financing pay-day lenders who have bankrupted entire communities, and 3. Bankrolling dirty energy in America

Restore the Vote!

On March 8th, Kentucky Jobs with Justice was in Frankfort, Kentucky to lobby for HB 70, the Restoration of Voting Rights for Former Felons. Kentucky is one of the four most difficult states for a former felon to get their voting rights back. An estimated 186,000 Kentuckians cannot vote because of this law. As part of our Voter Registration & Education Campaign, we understand that this is a vital concern to the people of Kentucky. Unfortunately, HB 70 did not make it out of the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2012. The fight will continue for social justice in Kentucky!!

Cyber-Party
On January 30th, in honor of Attica Scotts birthday, we hosted our first ever Cyber-Party to kick off the 20 year Anniversary of Kentucky Jobs with Justice!! If you dont know what a cyberparty is, then you missed an awesome event. Make sure that you are signed up on our mailing list, so that you will receive your invitation to the next Kentucky Jobs with Justice Cyber-Party!!

Steering Committee
We would like to say Farewell & Thank You for your years of service to the following folks who have rotated off of the Steering Committee recently: Shameka Parish-Wright Lorena Marin Kay Tillow. We would also like to welcome the folks who have joined the Steering Committee recently: Tim Findley, Jr. Bryan Burns Donald Duncan We look forward to what these new Steering Committee members will bring to the table as we move Kentucky Jobs with Justice into 2012 and beyond!!

Voter Registration
The primary elections are critically important to the process of democracy. What is also critical is to ensure that everyone who is eligible to vote is registered to vote! Between now and the election in November you will see us out in the community doing what we love to do: talking with folks about what matters to them! At the same time, we will be getting folks REGISTERED to vote in November!!! Keep an eye on our website, and we will keep you updated on where we will be with our Voter Registration Tables this summer!

Wage Theft
Wage theft is all too common in Kentucky. Here at Kentucky Jobs with Justice, we are committed to bringing about the systemic changes that are needed to prevent wage theft in Kentucky. There will be many facets that we will have to address as part of this campaign, such as: expanding Kentucky's theft of labor statute, enacting Wage Theft Ordinances across the State, streamlining the complaint process, creating employer accountability, reforming government action, and protecting workers from retaliation. This will take time, effort, commitment, and resources; and together, WE can make Wage Theft nonexistent in Kentucky. You can read our Wage Theft Report on our website: www.kyjwj.org. Be sure to sign up for our email alerts so that you can stay up to date on our Wage Theft Campaign!

Faith, Labor, & Community Breakfast

On June 23rd, Kentucky Jobs with Justice will be hosting our first Faith, Labor, & Community Breakfast. The theme for this: Wage Theft: It Steals our Rights at Work. We will be bringing together leaders and representatives from the three sectors of our membership base (faith, labor, & community) to talk about how Wage Theft directly affects our Rights at Work. We will also have a few awards to give out. It wouldnt be a breakfast without great food! The exact details and the registration link will go out through our email alert system. Make sure you are signed up with your current email address: www.kyjwj.org

I am filled with gratitude to have the opportunity to work for Kentucky Jobs with Justice. Give me a second to tell you why... One of my core values is that people should always come before profits. I am more important than my paycheck; you are more important than the donation that you can make. Kentucky Jobs with Justice is an organization that embodies this same value, and they always put PEOPLE OVER PROFITS. Here we fight to protect our Rights at Work, to ensure that immigration legislation is fair, and to hold Corporate America accountable by putting people over profits! I look forward to many years here at KY JwJ, and I hope that you will join me along the way in the fight for social and economic justice. In Solidarity, Bonifacio Flaco Aleman, Executive Director Kentucky Jobs with Justice
