avanna Burton first made her mark in Group A athletics when she scored 10 points and had nine rebounds as a freshman in the 2009 Division 1 state basketball semifinals in Richmond against Bland County. She completed her four-year varsity career by making another impression. This one came in the sand at the triple jump pit at Radford University at the Group A track and field championships on June 2. The Narrows senior soared 36 feet, 9 14 inches to win her second state title in three years after claiming the Group A long jump as a sophomore for the tiny Giles County school. Burtons feat was achieved despite her feet. The 6-foot senior was plagued during the 2011- 12 school year by plantar fasciitis, a painful inflammation of tissue that forced her to miss seven games during the Green Waves basketball season.

Robert Anderson

MATT GENTRY | The Roanoke Times

By then, Burton already had set Narrows career record for volleyball kills, landing a walk-on spot in the program at Radford University. Narrows won no Mountain Empire District games with Burton out of the lineup. When Burton returned, she had 21 points including the game-winning basket against Grayson County, and 31 points and 15 rebounds in a victory over Group A Division 1 semifinalist Galax. Narrows won 67 basketball games during Burtons four-year career. Burtons foot problems slowed but did not stop her from getting on track this spring. She turned in a personal-best of 37 feet, 10 12 inches to set a Region C meet record in the triple jump, a leap missed by one inch of being the best all season in Timesland. Making a mark indeed.

Narrows senior Savanna Burton won the VHSL Group A championship in triple jump.

Christiansburgs Brenden Motley signed to play quarterback at Virginia Tech.

MATT GENTRY | The Roanoke Times

renden Motley began the 2011 high school football season with a big catch. He ended the 2011-12 basketball season with another huge reception. In between, the Christiansburg senior passed every other test. Motley was the main man on the marquee as Christiansburg reached the Group AA Division 4 football championship game in December in Lynchburg and won the Division 4 state basketball title in March in Richmond. The signs of stardom showed up on the very first play of the Blue Demons football season. Christiansburg drove down Route 8 to face Floyd County. Motley, the starting quarterback, saw the snap from center sail far over his head. Instead of letting the ball hit the ground, the 6-foot-4, 194-pound Motley made an over-theshoulder grab, pivoted and raced for a 12-yard gain. Six months later, Christiansburg found itself

protecting a three-point lead over Grafton late in overtime in the state basketball final at VCU. This time, Motley was on the receiving end of a fullcourt inbounds pass from teammate Zach Davis. With 23 seconds left, Motley made a free throw that loomed large in the Demons 70-69 victory. Motley stuffed plenty of other highlights into his senior year, beginning last summer with his commitment to play football at Virginia Tech. His play at quarterback and free safety in a 28-26 loss to Briar Woods in the football championship game was epic: 126 passing yards and a touchdown, 17 tackles, a pass interception and a forced fumble that helped his team rally from a 28-13 deficit. Motley provided Christiansburgs basketball team with all the essentials: 3-point shooting, ballhandling, interior defense, rebounding, passing. Big-time, beginning to end. Robert Anderson
