7. The Architecture
BitDefender Enterprise Manager is divided into several parts: BitDefender Server, BitDefender Local Manager, BitDefender Management Console, BitDefender Deployment Tool and BitDefender Update Server.

7.1. BitDefender Server

It is the most important BitDefender Enterprise Manager component and its purpose is to manage the information received from workstations, assign and maintain different security tasks such as: install/uninstall the antivirus product; antivirus scanning; scheduled scanning; update virus definitions database; remotely change the security options of the BitDefender products installed on workstations; generate detailed reports and statistics. This component can be considered the "brain" of the product. The tasks received from the user through the management console are forwarded to the workstations in order to be executed, while the information received from the workstations is processed by the server. The information is then forwarded to the management console where it can be viewed and interpreted by the administrator. The server can be dynamically extended to perform various other security-related tasks that the customers may need. The server can be password protected. The password can be set in the management console.

Note
To manage the BitDefender clients from a different workstation than the BitDefender Server , you must perform a custom installation of BitDefender Enterprise Manager. When reaching the third installation step click Custom and in the window that appears disable all components other than BitDefender Enterprise Management Console and BitDefender Deployment Tool.

This is a independent component. It allows for the remote installation of the BitDefender Local Manager, supplanting the need to locally install it on each workstation. However, on some operating systems (Microsoft Windows 98, Windows ME) this local installation is a necessity. In case the remote installation fails, you can create an unattended package that you will have to run on the target computers.

Click Do not scan files greater than and type in the maximum size of the files to be scanned. If the size is 0 Kb, all files will be scanned. Monitor Registry Activity - A very important part of the Windows operating system is called the Registry. This is where Windows keeps its settings, installed programs, user information and so on. The Registry is also used to define which programs should be launched automatically when Windows is started. Viruses often use this in order to be automatically launched when the user restarts his computer. BitDefender keeps an eye on the Windows Registry - this is again useful for detecting Trojan horses. It will alert you whenever a program will try to modify a registry entry in order to be executed at Windows start-up.

Note
BitDefender will usually alert you when you install new programs that need to run after the next startup of your computer. In most cases, these programs are legitimate and can be trusted.

Monitor Email Activity - all the incoming e-mail messages will be scanned by BitDefender.

Important
This is highly recommended.

Show warning when a virus is found an alert window will be displayed when a virus is found in a file or in an e-mail message. For an infected file the alert window will contain the name of the virus and the path to it, and in case of an infected e-mail the window will contain information about the sender, the receiver and the virus name. AntiSpam Settings . Select the check box corresponding to AntiSpam Settings in order to enable this category of options. You can see three categories of options:AntiSpam General Settings, AntiSpam Advanced Settings and AntiSpam Filters. AntiSpam General Settings . The following options are available: AntiSpam Enabled - activates the antispam protection. Mark spam messages in subject - all the email messages considered Spam will be tagged with Spam in subject. Tolerance level - set the tolerance level (the spam score). BitDefender checks all the message components against many rules, (i.e. not only the header but also the message body in either HTML or text format), using the Bayesian filter, the URL filter and the Heuristic filter. Each rule is given a numerical value and the aggregate of these values is an overall spam score that ranges from 0-100. The overall spam score is measured against the desired level of spam sensitivity (threshold), and a decision is made whether the message is spam or is valid. If the threshold level exceeds the spam score for a message, the message is considered spam. Exceptions are made if the sender is on the White list. The default Spam Threshold is 80. If you reduce this value the filter will let some spam through. If you increase this value very little spam will pass, but some legitimate messages may be tagged as spam. AntiSpam Advanced Settings . The following options are available: Automatically add to Friends list - if you select this option, the next time the user clicks the Not Spam button from the BitDefender Toolbar (located in Outlook / Outlook Express) the sender will be automatically added to the Friends list. Automatically add to Spammers list - if you select this option, the next time the user clicks the Is Spam button from the BitDefender Toolbar (located in

89

10

Management console

Outlook / Outlook Express) the sender will be automatically added to the Spammers list.

Important
These buttons are used to train the Bayesian filter.

Limit the dictionary size to 200000 words - with this option you can set the size of the Bayesian dictionary - smaller is faster, bigger is more accurate. The recommended size is: 200.000 words. AntiSpam Filters . The following filters are available: Heuristic filter - The Heuristic filter performs set of tests on all the message components, (i.e. not only the header but also the message body in either HTML or text format), looking for words, phrases, links or other characteristics of Spam. It detects also the e-mail messages with SEXUALLY EXPLICIT in the subject line. Select the checkbox corresponding to Block Explicit Content to consider these messages SPAM.

Note
Starting May 19th 2004, Spam that contains sexually oriented material must include thewarning SEXUALLY EXPLICIT: in the subject line or face fines for violations of federal law.BitDefender will tag these messages as SPAM.

Most of the Spam messages are written in Cyrillic and / or Asian charsets. You can configure the Heuristic filter to reject all the e-mail messages written in these charsets. Bayesian filter - The Bayesian filter module classifies messages according to statistical information regarding the rate at which specific words appear in messages classified Spam as compared to those declared non-Spam (by you or by the heuristic filter). This means, for example, if a certain four-letter word is seen to appear more often in Spam, it is natural to assume there is an increased probability that the next incoming message that includes it actually IS Spam. All relevant words within a message are taken into account. By synthesizing the statistical information, the overall probability for the whole message to be Spam is computed. This module presents another interesting characteristic: it is trainable. It adapts quickly to the type of messages received by a certain user, and stores information

90

Tasks administration

Management console

10

about all. To function effectively, the filter must be trained, meaning, to be presented with samples of Spam and legitimate messages, much like a hound is primed to trace a certain scent. Sometimes the filter must be corrected too prompted to adjust when it makes a wrong decision.

Important
The user can correct the Bayesian module by using the Is Spam and Not Spam buttons from the BitDefender toolbar (located in Outlook or Outlook Express).

Friends/Spammers lists - Most people communicate regularly to a group of people or even receive messages from companies or organizations in the same domain. By using friends or spammers lists, you can easily classify which people you want to receive e-mail from (friends) no matter what the message contains, or which people you never want to hear from again (spammers).

Important
The user can manage the friends/spammers list from the BitDefender Management Console or from the BitDefender toolbar (located in Outlook or Outlook Express).

URL filter - Most of the Spam messages contain links to various web locations (which contain more advertising and the possibility to buy things, usually). BitDefender has a database, which contains links to these kinds of sites. Every URL link in an e-mail message will be checked against the URL database. If a match is made, +45 will be added to the Spam score of the message.

Important
Every time you perform an update new rules will be added to the heuristic filter and new links will be added to the URL filter. This will help increase the effectiveness of the AntiSpam engine.

Firewall Settings . The Firewall protects your computer from inbound and outbound unauthorized connection attempts. It is quite similar to a guard at your gate - it will keep a watchful eye on your Internet connection and keep track of who to allow access to the Internet and who to block. A firewall is essential if you have a broadband or DSL connection. It is effective in blocking Trojan horses and other tools installed by hackers, who try to compromise your privacy and send your personal information, like credit card numbers, from your computer to the hacker. Select the check box corresponding to Firewall Settings in order to enable this category of options. First you must activate the Firewall (by selecting the check box correspond-

In order to become BitDefender Enterprise client, a workstation must have installed BitDefender Local Manager. The installation of this component enables the transfer of tasks from the BitDefender Server to the client workstation. In order to ensure a proper functioning of the product, before installation, verify that the following system requirements are met: Processor: Intel Pentium Compatible processor - 200 MHz or higher. Minimum hard disk space: 10MB. Minimum RAM Memory: 32MB. Operating system: minimum Windows 98 SE.

The module that performs the deploy installation is BitDefender Deployment Tool. There are 3 ways to launch it: On the Tools menu, click BitDefender Deployment Tool. From Windows start menu follow the path: Programs BitDefender Enterprise Manager BitDefender Deployment Tool. Select the target from the Clients section, right-click and from the shortcut menu click BitDefender Deployment Tool. 15.1. Overview
The BitDefender Deployment Tool helps you to install, uninstall or repair BitDefender products on your network. It will also help you create unattended deployment packages for use on computers where automatic deployment cannot be performed. You can create a package and install it automatically or manually.

Note
The automatic installation of BitDefender Local Manager works only on NT/2000/XP/2003.

If the automatic installation has failed you can create a package on your computer for later use (select Create an unattended installation package for later use in the second step of the wizard). With the package you can do one of the following: Write it on a cd and install it on any computer you want. Send it by e-mail to any user you want. Put it on a shared folder, so that it can be read from any other workstation. Use a logon script, so that after the login procedure it will be installed automatically.

15.2. Logon script procedure

You can also deploy the BitDefender Local Manager on the desired computers using a logon script. You must keep in mind the following facts: If the client operating system (OS) is Windows 98, or Windows ME, the Logon script must be a batch file (with extension .bat) or executable program (with extension .exe). If the client OS is Windows NT, the Logon script can be a batch, command, or executable file (with extension .bat, .cmd, or .exe). If the client is Windows 2000 or above, the Logon script can be a batch file, a command file, executable program

(with extension *.bat, *.cmd, *.exe), or a program written in a language hosted by Windows Script Host (WSH). Examples of WSH supported languages are VBScript (with extension *.vbs) and JScript (with extension *.js). The type of Logon script you use should support all clients you expect the user to Logon to. We have already created 2 sample logon scripts that you can use: logon.bat and bdeploy.vbs. They were created considering the above operating system requirements limitations. You will have to edit bdeploy.vbs and replace the sample information (\\SampleServer\SampleSharedFolder\deploypack.exe) with the one that suites your network configuration.

Important
However you can create a logon script of your own, that would better suite your needs.

20. WMI Server Add-on

20.1. Description
BitDefender WMI Scripts Server Add-on implements tasks based on WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation). These tasks can be executed across the BitDefender Enterprise Manager network. Windows Management Instrumentation is the Microsoft implementation of WebBased Enterprise Management (WBEM), an initiative to establish standards for accessing and sharing management information over an enterprise network. WMI is WBEM-compliant and provides integrated support for the Common Information Model (CIM), the data model that describes the objects that exist in a management environment. Basically, this feature allows running of script tasks across the BitDefender Enterprise Manager network. New task templates have been added to BitDefender Enterprise Manager (available after installing BitDefender WMI Scripts Server Add-on).The tasks can be deployed only on machines with WMI Services installed. Currently, WMI is included on machines running Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 2003 or Windows ME. BitDefender offers an easy way to install WMI on stations running Windows 98 or Windows NT4.0. The WMI installation package is located in the "WMI Setup" folder, from the main BitDefender Enterprise Manager installation folder. This package should be installed on every Windows 98/NT stations where WMI support is needed. BitDefender WMI Scripts Server Add-on requires BitDefender Enterprise Manager v2.2 or higher. The new BitDefender Local Manager is responsible for running the WMI tasks on each machine. However, there are some scripts that will not run on all Windows platforms (especially Windows 98). A table of supported scripts cross-referenced with OS versions follows. Computer Management
