New party
leaders
elected
to serve
By MELISSA DIPENTO
The Washington Twp. Sun
Both political parties recent-
ly announced new leadership
teams in the township.
Lauren Petroski has a long
track record of political work.
After all, she got started as
soon as she could. At age 18,
Petroski began working elec-
tions for local Gloucester
County municipalities. And 12
years later, shes still in the
game.
Petroski, 30, along with
Frank Cianci were both recent-
ly elected by the Washington
Township Democratic Execu-
tive Committee to serve as co-
chairpersons for the 2012-2014
term.
Im so excited to get rolling,
to really concentrate on the
mayor and council and getting
them elected in November,
she said.
Cianci, who got involved
with the group in 2006, said his
partner would add something
new to the Democratic Party.
Shes a very bright individ-
ual. Were glad to have some-
one on the younger side to help
bring in younger people,
Cianci said.

cently announced new party

tore Coppola at the helm and

Duo to share fictional stories
By MELISSA DIPENTO
The Washington Twp. Sun
Jonathan and Karen Fluck say
they look forward to ending their
days reading bedtime stories to 6-
year-old Ethan and 4-year-old
Ephraim.
And then one night a few years
ago, Ethan asked mom and dad to
tell him their own version of a
bedtime story.
So the Flucks came up with a
wildly vivid story about animals,
complete with fun facts about
creatures big and small. They
also created two characters, T-Bot
and Peabody, who represented
their two little boys.
The stories caught on,
Jonathan Fluck said. And the
Washington Township couple
used the same characters each
night before they tucked the boys
into bed.
They love facts, they love
learning and animals, Fluck
said. So we tried to make it inter-
esting.
Soon after their stories were
catching on, Karen Fluck was at
the bookstore with her son, who
didnt see anything he liked at the
store.
We thought why dont we start
writing our own books? Fluck
said.
Jonathan was no writer, he ad-
mits, but his elementary school
teacher wife helped him along the
way.
She spent a number of years
teaching, and writing was one of
her strengths, Fluck said. Id
outline the facts, the boring stuff,
and shed weave it into a story.
Along the way, Fluck also dap-
pled with 3D Animation and
worked up to where he could use
Photoshop to add his characters
to any animal kingdom.
The couples first book, T-Bot
and Peabody Explore the Zoo, be-
gins with greetings from the char-
acters, who explain what they
hope to see during their trip to
the zoo.
The characters wind their way
throughout the zoo, encountering
elephants, rhinoceroses, mon-
keys and camels. Each animal the
pair stumbles upon tells a story to
the two characters. The facing
page features facts, charts and
graphs about the animals they
meet.
The second book, T-Bot and
Peabody Explore the Ocean, goes
a little deeper literally.
They dynamic duo explores
five layers of the ocean, meeting
hundreds of different sea crea-
tures as they dive deeper and
deeper. The book discusses each
layer of the ocean, and how differ-
ent creatures survive and thrive
there.
They meet dolphins, sea tur-
tles, whale sharks, viperfish, a
dumbo octopus and even a
ctenophore, which is similar to a
jellyfish.
The second book includes
many more depictions of aquatic
life, so the couple decided to in-
clude a glossary at the end of the
book, which includes photos,
names and facts about everything
pictured in the book.
The couple has previously par-
ticipated in Read Across America
Week at the elementary school
level, sharing their stories and
getting kids excited about reading
and learning. Fluck said the cou-
ple hopes to continue that mo-
mentum into the future.
Recently, the couple is turning
to more hands-on events, where
local kids can listen and learn

School Chinese Teacher Ron
Dempsey has been selected to
serve on a panel that will review
draft test materials for the Na-
tional Evaluation Series in Chi-
nese. As a member of the Man-
darin Chinese Content Advisory
Committee, Dempsey will attend
a conference on Aug. 21, in St.
Louis, Mo. This is the third time
Dempsey has been asked to serve
on the panel.
The National Evaluation Se-
ries, hosted through Pearson Edu-
cation, Inc., is a testing program
designed to address todays needs
for knowledgeable teachers. More
than 400 expert, respected teach-
ers from across the country have
participated in extensive reviews
of the content and appropriate-
ness of test objections and ques-
tions in a variety of academic
fields including reading, writing,
mathematics, technology literacy
and world lan-
guages.
We are
most excited
for Mr.
Dempsey to
return to the
National Eval-
uation Series
panel again
this summer,
World Lan-
guages/ESL
Supervisor Ray Anderson said.
Mr. Dempsey works diligently to
promote the Chinese language,
and his participation in the panel
again this year is a tribute to his
dedication to Chinese and to the
excellence of our program here
in the Washington Township Pub-
lic Schools.
Dempsey has traveled exten-
sively in China, most recently as
a member of the 2010 Advanced
Study and Training Program on
Pedagogy and Chinese Teaching
Materials November 17-23, 2010,
in Beijing, China. He participated
in various workshops and local
school visits, gaining first-hand
information on the latest Chinese
language teaching materials and
methods.
Dempsey spent six weeks in
China in the summer of 2008
through a grant from the Bureau
of Educational and Cultural Af-
fairs of the United States Depart-
ment of State. He returned to the
country through a Fulbright-
Hays Grant and spent six weeks
in intensive language training,
pedagogy classes, cultural lec-
tures and collaboration among
teachers for whom Chinese is not
their native language.
Dempsey served as a panelist
at the American Council on the
Teaching of Foreign Languages
National Convention in Novem-
ber of 2009.

from the adventures of T-Bot and
Peabody in a fun environment.
We try to connect with kids in
an environment theyll have fun
with, Fluck said. So how to in-
troduce stories to children? Kids
like to run and play, so we thought
how can we tie running and
jumping into a nonfiction story?
An event geared toward read-
ing and fun will be held this Fri-
day in Washington Township.
Kids who come out to the event
can take part in an animal scav-
enger hunt. The couple will read
the story and also hide animal
trading cards with photos and
facts on the premises.
The Flucks will tell kids the an-
imals need your help getting back
to the ocean, sending participants
off to find all the animal cards.
Once they come back with all the
cards, children will receive a
goody bag. Each family will also
receive a copy of the book.
The event will be held at Mon-
key Town, 5360 Route 42 in the
Whitman Plaza, from 5 to 8 p.m.
on Friday, June 29. Reservations
are required. Call 227-JUMP.
As for the future of the series,
Fluck says keep an eye out for a
new and exciting adventure with
T-Bot and Peabody.
Theres a whole lot of possibil-
ities, with a very long life ahead
for the series, Fluck said.

Ginny Murphy as vice chairper-
son.
They said they are excited
about new opportunities in the
Republican Party and are coming
off a high with the primary win.
Coppola said he and his team
are ready to get to work for the Re-
publicans, to help them get the
win in November.
I am humbled to have the full
support of Washington Township
Republicans, however all the
praise really should go out to the
committee members themselves
for dedicating their precious time
to making lives better for town-
ship residents, Coppola said.
Cianci wanted to get involved
with Democratic leadership in
the township, because he said the
Democratic ticket would keep
Washington Township on the
right track.
I want to help people in the
middle class, Cianci said.
Everybody thinks big business
is the cure-all. But the middle
class seems to be forgotten.
This summer, the Democratic
Executive Committee will lead
the charge in helping to get in-
cumbent Mayor Barbara Wallace
and councilman Scott Newman
reelected in November, along
with council hopeful Michelle
Martin.
I stepped up for this position
because these are hard times
were living in, and I think its in-
credibly important that we elect
people that support the middle
class, Cianci said. The Demo-
cratic Party stands with working
people and this team will work
hard to earn every single vote we
can.
The group plans to hold
fundraisers and is working with
other local officials and groups to
plan for a productive campaign
season.
Cianci and Petroski are follow-
ing in the footsteps of Jill Mc-
Crea, who just ended her term as
chairwoman. Both newcomers
said they hope to be able to con-
tinue the successful trail the
prior administration leaves be-
hind.
Jill has been a cornerstone of
this organization for a long time
and I know that she will continue
to work vigorously to help this
party. I look forward to working
with her as we move forward,
Cianci said.
Murphy said the Republican
Party has changed significantly
in recent years, with more high
school and college students step-
ping up to help with elections and
get involved.
The last two years, weve been
making progress and have shown
we want to be a part of our local
government, Murphy said.
Republicans thanked former
leader Mike Pascetta for forging
the trail for the group and setting
them on the right path.
It is no secret, that where you
have strong leadership such as in
Washington Township, you have
a strong Republican Party, and we
can thank former Chairman
Mike Pascetta for that, Coppola
said.
Republicans also re-elected
Jack Yerkes as treasurer of the
group and Mary Behm as secre-
tary.
The Democratic Committee
also elected Vice Chairman Larry
Kennie, Recording Secretary
Amy Golembo, Corresponding
Secretary Mark Iaconelli, Treas-
urer Paula Corbi and Sergeant-at-
Arms Mike Sauter.

in our opinion
T
he good news: New Jersey ac-
counted for 25 percent of all
new jobs created in the United
States in the month of May: 17,500 new
jobs were created.
The bad news: the states unemploy-
ment rate rose from 9.1 to 9.2 percent.
And lets be mindful: the 9.2 percent
figure really isnt an accurate unem-
ployment percentage at all.
There are countless people whose
unemployment benefits have run out,
and whose cases no longer count in de-
partment of labor statistics.
And there are others who may have
lost a job, who were ineligible for un-
employment benefits, and, again,
whose cases are not factored into the
state unemployment rate.
And so as encouraging as it is to
hear our state created the most new
jobs in the country, the overall known
unemployment numbers are still ex-
tremely alarming.
Gov. Christie says the new jobs re-
port means consumers are becoming
more confident.
The overall figures paint a complete-
ly different picture.
Were many years into this econom-
ic mess. And were still struggling as a
state, despite the so-called comeback.
While the governors 10 percent
across-the-board income-tax cut would
certainly help some, it certainly wont
help the middle class all that much.
A person making an annual salary
of $35,000 would see a whopping $1 a
week increase in take-home pay.
This is hardly enough to spark con-
sumer confidence.
Much more still needs to be done at
the federal and state levels to inspire
confidence. Realistically, the unem-
ployment percentage needs to drop to
close to 8 percent before theres any
reason for anyone to celebrate.
And even then, the numbers will
still be too high.
We look forward to the day we can
agree consumer confidence is back.
Were just not sure that time is here
yet.
States uptick in unemployment
Number rises despite creation of 17,500 new jobs; more must be done
How confident are you?
Gov. Christie says he believes con-
sumers in New Jersey are gaining
confidence. Yet the unemployment
rate jumped in May. How confident in
the economy are you? We want to
know.

Parents were on hand to see
some of the things their children
learned during their first year of
school, and also to see those same
children receive certificates
marking the completion of
kindergarten.
During the 25-minute pro-
grams one for each classroom,
morning and afternoon the
schools librarian (Mrs. Anita
DeAngelis), physical education
teacher (Mr. Rob Playo) and
music teacher (Ms. Lisa Sebas-
tiani) all led the students in
songs and dances that
explained some of the things they
learned.
After that part of the program,
the students received their full
art portfolios from teacher Mrs.
Renee Stracciolini, and then their
kindergarten completion certifi-
cate.

Victoria Cavaliere of Washing-
ton Township and a student at
Academy of Holy Angels, was
named the 2012 recipient of the
Saint Michael's College Book
Award for Academic Achieve-
ment with a Social Conscience.
The award recognizes students
who demonstrate a commitment
to leadership in volunteer service
and academic achievement.
Saint Michael's, located in
Burlington, Vermont, one of
America's top 10 college towns,
was founded on the belief that
serving others is part of its
Catholic tradition, and through
the award seeks to honor those
who demonstrate the true spirit
of volunteerism.
Award recipients, named at
schools throughout the country,
are high school juniors who are
inductees of the National Honor
Society or an equivalent school-
sponsored honors organization.
They must demonstrate a com-
mitment to service activities in
high school or community organ-
izations, taking leadership roles
in these activities.
Cavaliere was presented the
book First They Killed My Fa-
ther: A Daughter of Cambodia
Remembers (HarperCollins
2000) by Loung Ung, a 1993 Saint
Michael's College graduate who
has become a widely acclaimed
author.
In First They Killed My Fa-
ther, Ung gives a powerful auto-
biographical account, from a
child's perspective, of surviving
captivity during the genocidal Pol
Pot regime in Cambodia. She re-
veals an indomitable spirit in the
face of profound suffering, in-
cluding the loss of both her par-
ents and two of her siblings. Ung
has written a riveting memoir
about a family's survival, and in
turn, about the development of
Ung's on-going crusade for a land-
mine free world.
Learn What Matters at Saint
Michael's College, The Ed-
mundite Catholic liberal arts col-
lege, www.smcvt.edu. Saint
Michael's provides education
with a social conscience, produc-
ing graduates with the intellectu-
al tools to lead successful, pur-
poseful lives that will contribute
to peace and justice in our world.
Founded in 1904 by the Society of
St. Edmund and headed by Presi-
dent John J. Neuhauser, Saint

miles from Burlington, Vermont,
one of America's top college

Pickering, Guggenheim, Ful-
bright, and other grants. The col-
lege is one of the nation's top-100,
Best Liberal Arts Colleges as list-
ed in the 2012 U.S. News & World
