Charter
school
ruling still
uncertain
By MELISSA DIPENTO
The Cherry Hill Sun
The Cherry Hill, Voorhees,
Lawnside and Somerdale
School Districts continue to
wait for a ruling from the state
Department of Education on
whether it will allow Regis
Academy Charter School to
open its doors this fall.
In March, the Cherry Hill
School District requested a re-
consideration to grant the
charter to Regis, which would
open on the former Holy
Rosary site at 99 Burnt Mill
Road, near the Cherry
Hill/Voorhees border.
The Solid Rock Worship
Center currently rents the
land from the diocese, with the
intent to open the charter
school on the site.
Last week, Pastor Amir
Khan, who leads Solid Rock
and the charter school, said he
was ready to make settlement
with the diocese on the proper-
ty. He said one company has
begun working on appraising
the buildings.
The appeal was pending in
the Superior Court of New
Jersey appellate division,
until Chris Cerf, acting com-
missioner of Education, asked
to have control of the decision
given to him, which was grant-
ed by the court, said Susan
Bastnagel, the Cherry Hill
Cherry Hill West grad
Vince Voiro used to take
the mound at Penn. Now,
hes getting ready to take
on the big leagues as a
pitcher for the Oakland As.

Vince Voiro cant remember a
time when he didnt play baseball.
And hes got the home videos,
circa 1990, to prove it.
He played in the infield while
in Little League and tried the out-
field once he got older, but always
stayed true to what he really en-
joyed pitching.
I always liked it. As a pitcher,
youre involved with every play.
And with pitching, you have con-
trol of the game, he said.
Sticking with the position has
paid off for Voiro, a 22-year-old
Cherry Hill West and 2012 Univer-
sity of Pennsylvania graduate.
Earlier this month, Voiro was
selected in the 15th round of
Major League Baseballs First-
Year Player Draft 469th overall
by the Oakland Athletics.
Its really exciting. My goal
was to continue playing baseball,
and now Im able to realize that
dream is coming true, Voiro
said.
Voiro received a call on June 8
from the organization, and by
June 11, he was en route to Ari-
zona, to pitch for the As minor

By KEVIN CANESSA Jr.
The Cherry Hill Sun
The red light camera at Route
70 and Springdale Road has been
suspended from operation follow-
ing a decision by the state Depart-
ment of Transportation to review
63 of them because of yellow-
light timers, the DOT announced.
According to national stan-
dards, yellow lights must remain
lit one second for every 10 mph of
the speed limit at an intersection.
If the speed limit, for example, is
45 mph, the yellow light must re-
main solid for 4.5 seconds. If the
speed limit is 30 mph, the yellow
light must remain solid for 3 sec-
onds.
According to reports, the DOT
is questioning whether the yellow
lights at the 63 named red-light
cameras including the one in
Cherry Hill are properly timed.
The DOT says that when these
aforementioned cameras were in-
stalled, it wasnt immediately
known if the yellow lights were
properly timed.
Beginning Wednesday, June 20,
and until officials can be sure the
yellow lights are properly timed,
tickets will not be issued at or by
these red-light cameras. The only
other camera in question in Cam-
den County is in Stratford.
Well have more information as
it becomes available.

Voiro confident hell get to the big leagues
league affiliate team, the Arizona
As.
Hes still got a ways to go before
he can take the mound at The Col-
iseum in Oakland. But for now,
hes enjoying the ride.
The competition was good at
Penn, and I put in a lot of work,
Voiro said. The transition hasnt
been that difficult, Im compara-
ble to many of the players.
This season at Penn, Voiro was
named Ivy League Pitcher of the
Week numerous times and had
eight starts on the mound. He
also led the Quakers in wins, in-
nings pitched and strikeouts, fan-
ning 59 batters in 66 innings.
Most of his colleagues now on
the diamond range in age from 18
to 22, so many are on, what you
could call, a level playing field.
Voiro said hes confident hell
get to the big leagues someday.
I have to stay consistent and
be able to compete at all the differ-
ent levels, and know what the ex-
pectations are, he said.
He said he doesnt mind the po-
tential change-of-pace from sea-
son to season and might even
enjoy throwing pitches for differ-
ent teams in different parts of the
country as he advances through
the minor leagues.
Im not burdened by the idea
of moving around, Im looking
forward to the opportunities,
Voiro said.
And so are his friends and fam-
ily.
Everyone who knows me
knows this was what I wanted to
do, he said. A lot of people are
very happy for me.

The Cherry Hill F.C. Fire U12 girls soccer team, finished the spring 17-0, outscoring their opponents
56-5. The Fire won the National Conference of S.J.G.S.L. at 10 and 0. They won two spring tourna-
ments; the Washington Twp. Easter Classic and the Cherry Hill F.C. spring tournament. In the Cher-
ry Hill tourney, the Fire defeated Voorhees 3-0 to gain a shot at the final. In the championship
game, they scored with 37 seconds remaining to win 1-0 vs. Burlington Twp. The win kept their
spring record unblemished. The C.H.F.C. Fire are coached by Greg Ogden and Jim Weick.
Cherry Hill F.C. Fire U12 finish undefeated season
In Cherry Hill, we are blessed with an
extensive trail system that provides our
residents with ample opportunities to
enjoy the outdoors. The Township has
trails positioned in various Open Space lo-
cations throughout our community that
you can easily find information about by
visiting the Township website at
www.cherryhill-nj.com. There you will
find the trail heads identifying the start of
the route and details about the distance,
walkability and features found at each trail
location.
Serving as a source of pride to many of
our community members, the trails are in-
tended to help users enjoy a unique chance
to experience natures sights, sounds,
touch and smells. They are designed and
cared for in an environmentally sound way,
making a minimum impact on the wildlife
habitat while enabling people to connect
with nature. The Cherry Hill Trails offer
residents a great chance to become physi-
cally active and support the Mayors Well-
ness campaign because whether you walk,
run, or ride your bike, trails give you the
opportunity to get your heart pumping,
lungs expanding, and muscles working at
various levels of difficulty, thereby improv-
ing your physical and mental well-being.
Cherry Hill has received national atten-
tion for two of the 10 trails we have located
throughout the
community. The
trails at both Bar-
clay Farmstead
and Croft Farms
have been formal-
ly designated by
the Secretary of
the U.S. Depart-
ment of Interior as
National Recre-
ation Trails, an
honor given to ex-
emplary trails of
local and regional
significance and recognized as part of
America's national system of trails.
The vast majority of our trail mainte-
nance and development is provided through
grant funding and sustained with a great
deal of volunteer support, eliminating any
burden on taxpayers. The Cherry Hill Envi-
ronmental Board works with the Recreation
and Public Works Departments, as well as
the Camden County Branch of the New Jer-
sey Youth Corps, Boy & Girl Scouts, reli-
gious organizations and community volun-
teers to help improve and maintain trails.
More than 30 volunteers participated in the
National Trails Day at Bortons Mill Trails,
installing trail signs and removing invasive
plant species.
In an effort to help residents get infor-
mation and better navigate the terrain,
Kiosks have been installed at the Bunker
Hill and Kresson Trail enabling trail users
to have a map of the trails with nature,
safety and contact information included.
The kiosks were installed as part of proj-
ects for Boy Scouts to earn the rank of
Eagle Scout and the ultimate goal is to have
a kiosk located at every trail. The Croft
Farms, Barclay Farmstead and Bortons
Mill Trails include a nature trail with
guides available at the beginning and end
of the route, and at the website.
Along with special cleanups and support
from local organizations, a subset of the
Cherry Hill Township Environmental
Board (CHEB) is the Cherry Hill Trail
Crew which is comprised of volunteers
who promote conservation and perform
trail improvement and maintenance on all
of the Townships trails. They hold regu-
lar Trail Crew work sessions on the second
Saturday of each month from 8 a.m. to
noon at a designated trail with additional
sessions scheduled on an as-needed basis.
If you would like to join them, you contact
the Trail Crew via email at
chtrailcrew@gmail.com.
I encourage everyone to visit Cherry
Hills trails and experience all of the beau-
ty that nature has to offer.

in our opinion
T
he good news: New Jersey ac-
counted for 25 percent of all
new jobs created in the United
States in the month of May: 17,500 new
jobs were created.
The bad news: the states unemploy-
ment rate rose from 9.1 to 9.2 percent.
And lets be mindful: the 9.2 percent
figure really isnt an accurate unem-
ployment percentage at all.
There are countless people whose
unemployment benefits have run out,
and whose cases no longer count in de-
partment of labor statistics.
And there are others who may have
lost a job, who were ineligible for
unemployment benefits, and, again,
whose cases are not factored into the
state unemployment rate.
And so as encouraging as it is to
hear our state created the most new
jobs in the country, the overall known
unemployment numbers are still ex-
tremely alarming.
Gov. Christie says the new jobs re-
port means consumers are becoming
more confident.
The overall figures paint a complete-
ly different picture.
Were many years into this econom-
ic mess. And were still struggling as a
state, despite the so-called comeback.
While the governors 10 percent
across-the-board income-tax cut would
certainly help some, it certainly wont
help the middle class all that much.
A person making an annual salary
of $35,000 would see a whopping $1 a
week increase in take-home pay.
This is hardly enough to spark con-
sumer confidence.
Much more still needs to be done at
the federal and state levels to inspire
confidence. Realistically, the unem-
ployment percentage needs to drop to
close to 8 percent before theres any
reason for anyone to celebrate.
And even then, the numbers will
still be too high.
We look forward to the day we can
agree consumer confidence is back.
Were just not sure that time is here
yet.
States uptick in unemployment
Number rises despite creation of 17,500 new jobs; more must be done
How confident are you?
Gov. Christie says he believes con-
sumers in New Jersey are gaining
confidence. Yet the unemployment
rate jumped in May. How confident in
the economy are you? We want to
know.

the state.
This position is the key to de-
veloping our strategy moving
forward and creating a new
public safety paradigm in Cam-
den City and Camden County.
The details of the structure and
the organization of the assets
must be set and it is time to
bring in someone with the com-
positional makeup to imple-
ment the construction of the
Metro Division of the Camden
County Police Department.
The nations top cop, John Ti-
money, former Chief of Police
of Philadelphia, Miami and
currently an international con-
sultant, recommended Cordero
to the Freeholder Board during
his time in Camden County last
year to execute the Metro Divi-
sion plan.
Cordero has a long, accom-
plished resume and I would like
to detail some of the highlights.
He retired from the New York
Police Department in 2001 after
21 years with the department
and rose to the rank of Police
Inspector, overseeing eight
precincts and more than 2,000
sworn officers that
serviced 59 square
miles, and more
than 900,000 resi-
dents. Cordero
started out in the
NYPD as a patrol-
man working his
way up the ranks to
one of the top spots
in the department
among 34,500 other
sworn officers.
From 2002 to 2004, he served
as Chief of Police in Newton
Massachusetts. During his
tenure the city was twice
named Safest City in Amer-
ica by the Morgan Quitnos
Annual City Crime Ratings.
In 2004, he was appointed Po-
lice Director in East Orange.
Under his watch, overall crime
fell by 71 percent in four years -
a rate roughly 12 times the na-
tional average. Cordero trans-
formed an underperforming
law enforcement agency polic-
ing a city with the highest over-
all crime rate from 104 to 25 per
1,000 residents between 2003
and 2011.
In 2008, the Governor and At-
torney General of New Jersey
appointed Cordero the State Di-
rector of Law Enforcement. He
developed and implemented vi-
olence reduction methods that
set the stage for reducing New
Jerseys homicide rate for three
consecutive years for the first
time in over a decade. He
formed the Cordero Group in
2010, to offer his expertise to po-
lice and security forces seeking
to improve cost efficiencies, re-
duce crime and increase pro-
ductivity.
As Ive said in the past the
Metro Division will be paid for
by the city and state. In short,
this is another step forward as
we work to construct the neces-
sary components for a safer
Camden County.
Major step forward in implementing the Metro
Division of the Camden County Police Department

A pair of leading South Jersey
business owners recently showed
that the health and well-being of
the most vulnerable among us is
one of their top priorities. Deliver-
ing on a promise they made last
month, Stu Shiroff, of Lee New-
man Fine Mens Clothing and
Tehen Fine Womens Clothing, and
Jason Wolf of WCRE visited the
CARES Institute at the UMDNJ
School of Osteopathic Medicine
and made a generous donation
they worked together to raise.
For nearly 25 years, the
CARES Institute has been provid-
ing a lifeline and a way forward
for children in South Jersey, and
we are so happy to contribute to
its work with this gift to the foun-
dation of UMDNJ, said Stu Shi-
roff, owner of the Lee Newman
Shops.
The Institute provides medical
and social services to children
who have experienced abuse and
neglect.
Martin A. Finkel, DO, FAAP,
founder and director of the insti-
tute, led Shiroff, Wolf and Leor
Hemo, executive vice-president,
on a tour and accepted their
check for UMDNJ.
Nobody should have to endure
what the children at the CARES
Institute have experienced. As a
parent and a member of the com-
munity, I am proud to help fur-
ther the incredible work of Dr.
Finkel and his team, said
WCREs Jason Wolf.
Shiroff and Wolf raised the do-
nation money by co-sponsoring
an event in May along with Caffe
Aldo Lamberti to promote the
Buy Camden County initiative,
which encourages residents to
choose local businesses.
It was the first of many Buy
Camden County events planned
over the coming months. Future
events will include other local
businesses in the effort to support
the CARES Institute.

Following are the words of wis-
dom Board of Education Presi-
dent Seth Klukoff shared with
the Class of 2012 at commence-
ment at Temple Universitys Lia-
couras Center:
Throughout most of my career,
Ive carried around a quote from
the author and scholar Isaac Asi-
mov, and it reads as follows:
Anti-intellectualism has been a
constant thread winding its way
though our political and cultural
life, nurtured by the false notion
that democracy means that my
ignorance is just as good as your
knowledge.
Twenty years ago, when I first
came across those words, I found
them as wise as I do today. And
today, I believe those words are
even more relevant.
Why do I believe that? For one,
inherent in that quote is the as-
sumption that thoughtful, ration-
al, tolerant dialogue fuels a
democracy. Also inherent in that
quote is the warning that such a
dialogue, which ought to be
grounded in reason and fact, is in
grave danger of disappearing.
Its replacement, an endless vol-
ley of uninformed, ubiquitous
opinion. Everyone is right. No
one is wrong. On to the next dis-
cussion.
Thats where I believe we are
today. We live in a culture of ex-
tremes, where shades of gray, the
places where truth and fact exist,
are discredited, overlooked, not
considered cool. Try to present
an argument against the extreme,
to marshal facts and logic, and
you are perceived by that extreme
as being defensive, your argu-
ments are met with derision and,
even worse, you are personally at-
tacked in the coarsest, basest of
language. And when that extreme
position is voiced by a mob of
many, and amplified by an uncrit-
ical media, and when their simple
messages can spread virally in a
nanosecond via YouTube, Face-
book, Twitter or other social
media platforms, you no longer
have discussion or debate. You
have unthinking, unfettered
chaos.
Whatever the issue, be it the
environment, health care, the
economy, or the fate of public ed-
ucation, the formula appears to
be the same. Think about it.
When was the last time our na-
tion truly had a responsible con-
versation about global warming,
access to affordable health care,
employment, and our schools?
And think about this. Is our na-
tion even capable of having those
critical discussions today, or
worse, do we even want to?
I do wonder why our country
has reached a point where civil
discourse has seemingly become
outmoded, where opinion mas-
querades as fact, where nastiness
and disregard for language hide
behind the anonymity of email or
online comments, and where lies
cloaked as truth are trumpeted
loudly and brashly.
I wonder about this. I do.
But you know what; I think I
know how things can get better.
The answer, I believe, lies in
public education, in the responsi-
bility of educators to teach the
importance of critical thinking,
to foster questioning and rea-
soned argument in the classroom
and out, to place high value on
the beauty of words well written
or well spoken, to steadfastly ar-
ticulate, and defend, the essential
importance of what is fact and
what is fallacy, and to prepare stu-
dents to embrace those responsi-
bilities themselves, so that they
may practice them as informed,
thoughtful citizens.
You see, it is through public ed-
ucation that students are exposed
to a mosaic of diverse viewpoints
and backgrounds, have the oppor-
tunity to engage with peers who
think differently, hold different
values, and have different life ex-
periences. And it is through pub-
lic education where tolerance for
those differences are learned and
celebrated, rather than dismissed
and scorned.
I truly believe that public edu-
cation can help create this
change. And during a time when
that institution is being unjustly
vilified by elected officials and
ideologues, it must be supported
more than ever before. Public ed-
ucation can and must become the
bulwark against the continuing
tide of anti-intellectualism.
Graduates of Cherry Hill East
and West, I look to all of you to
draw upon your education, to
think before you write, listen be-
fore you argue, challenge the
logic of your own assumptions,
explore the value of the opposing
opinion and wrest yourselves
from the comfort of the known.
Those are the lessons you must
practice as you move forward in
your lives, and that you must ask
of your peers to practice as well.
For it is exactly those lessons that
can ultimately bring down the
false equivalence of ignorance
and knowledge that is so harmful
to our society.

Leaders and pet lovers in South
Jersey got together for PAWFEST
on Saturday, June 9 to support
two non-profit organizations that
seek forever homes for shelter
pets Lilos Promise and The Ani-
mal Adoption Shelter.
A new celebration for pets and
their owners, PAWFEST was host-
ed by pet-friendly Spring Hills
Cherry Hills Luxury Assisted Liv-
ing at 1450 Marlton Pike East in
Cherry Hill, the former location of
the Sheraton Poste Hotel.
The event included a pet pa-
rade with prizes supplied by Cut-
ters Mill, an art exhibit of crea-
ture portraits by Philadelphia
fine artist Colleen Rudolf, free an-
imal health information from Dr.
David Kupersmith, the veterinar-
ian from Cherry Hill's Animal &
Bird Health Care Center and Hos-
pital and special guest, CBS3s
weathercaster Carol Erickson.
Erickson is also an author who
advocates for shelter pets as fami-
ly companion animals.
Cutters Mill brought lots of
goodies for pets and their owners
and two wading pools to cool off
the many guests on a very hot
early June day.

School District Public Informa-
tion Officer.
Earlier this month, Bastnagel
said, a letter was sent from the
states charter school office to
Khan, letting him know his appli-
cation was being reviewed by the
state.
As you know, Acting Commis-
sioner Cerf has been granted ju-
risdiction over the Voorhees and
Cherry Hill appeal of Regis Acad-
emy Charter School. We are cur-
rently in the process of reviewing
the documents, and subsequently
your application and addenda.
Numerous issues and inaccura-
cies have been brought to our at-
tention regarding the schools ap-
plication and addenda, said Amy
Ruck, interim director, Office of
Charter Schools, in her letter to
Khan.
Among those issues for the
school districts involved, Bast-
nagel said, is that Solid Rock does
not own the buildings and contin-
ues to rent the property from the
Diocese.
A second question, she said, is
an issue of church and state. The
district feels public taxpayer
money should not go toward ac-
quiring religious property.
If Solid Rock had independent
means to purchase the building,
it would have done so by now,
she said.
The third issue for the districts
is based on the number of stu-
dents who will go to the school
and what each school district is
asked to contribute.
Regis Academys goal was to
have 250 students from the four
sending districts, or at least 90
percent, registered for the 2012-
2013 school year.
As of the June 11 enrollment
report, 22 students from Cherry
Hill, 14 from Voorhees, 13 from
Somerdale and 29 from Lawnside
have registered to start attending
Regis this fall, Bastnagel said.
Khan said, as of June 21, he
has 267 students registered and
on the waiting list, with about
half the students coming from
the four original districts, and the
other half from out-of-district.
Later this week, Regis Acade-
my is expected to receive a DOE
readiness visit, one more step in
the process to opening school
doors this fall.
At the meeting, Khan may have
to prove that enrollment require-
ments have been met.
In total, 78 students from the
four original sending districts
have signed up for the school. An-
other 187 students from other dis-
tricts, including some from Lin-
denwold, Sicklerville and Cam-
den, have also registered to attend
Regis. Altogether, students from
21 other local districts applied to
start at the charter school this
fall.
Khan said he anticipates a pos-
itive review from the DOE later
this week.
When you study charter
schools, even in cities and urban
areas, people have concerns,
Khan said. The DOE expects
that and understands this.
The school districts involved
have taken action against the
charter school, but so have resi-
dents.
Rita McClellan of Cherry Hill
sent testimony to the State Board
of Education on June 6, pointing
out that the charter school should
only be allowed to draw students
from the four original sending
districts.
During last nights Regis
Board of Trustees meeting, the
administrative principal stated
that, besides the four originally
approved sending districts, they
will be drawing students from 14
other school districts. Some of
the new, but unapproved, sending
districts will be from locations
such as Evesham, Camden, Mt.
Holly, Erial, Deptford and
Williamstown. According to cur-
rent charter rules, a charter must
draw students from contiguous
districts. The last time I checked a
map, most of these locations were
not adjacent to the original send-
ing districts, McClellan said.
This is not fair because many of
these districts have already estab-
lished their budgets for the next
school year.
The school districts have set
aside funding for the number of
students the DOE asked for each
district allocate for in the budget.
If Regis opens and fewer students
attend than what districts set
aside, those enrollments will be
reconciled in the fall, Bastnagel
said.
