St. Francis heard the Lord speak to him, saying: Go and rebuild my Church.

FAITH COMMUNITY WELCOMES YOU

IN TODAYS GOSPEL
Lk. 1:61-64 But his mother said in reply, "No. He will be called John." But they answered her, "There is no one among your relatives who has this name." So they made signs, asking his father what he wished him to be called. He asked for a tablet and wrote, "John is his name," and all were amazed. Immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue freed, and he spoke blessing God.

2 | MISSION SAN LUIS REY PARISH, Oceanside, California June 24, 2012

FROM FR. ADRIAN

Now that First Communions and Confirmation are behind us and the Parish School is closed things are just a little quieter at the parish building these days. Lots happening over at the Mission though with the retrofit underway at last! Its noisy for those of us who live alongside but it will be well worth it when we open the doors of the beautiful historic church in December, perhaps even in time for Christmas, if all goes according to plan. I conducted the long retreat in Ireland at the beginning of June taking as my theme, Repairing the HouseBuilding the Kingdom. It was a great experience, emotional and challenging with the Church in Ireland going through dark times in the wake of sexual abuse and misconduct as well as mismanagement and cover up by those in leadership. All of Europe is in the grip of fierce and quite aggressive secular forces that want to sideline the Church and reduce its influence to the minimum. But Ireland has had the Christian faith since the fourth century and in the past has been through what the old hymn calls dungeon, fire and sword. My feeling is that the Church will be purified by suffering and will emerge again as a beacon of light and hope in the darkness and emptiness of unbelief. During the retreat I used St. Francis as an example of how a very ordinary Christian can repair the damage to the House of the Faith, the Church how truth can lead to forgiveness and peace when compassion is the foundation upon which the House is built. Only once, when an older woman took my hand outside the front door of the church after Mass and said, Thank you for coming all this way to see us, did I lose my composure. I was deeply moved by the strength and faithfulness of the people I met and by their gentle serenity in hard times for those who love the Faith. Fr. Luis celebrated his birthday on June 15 and was serenaded outside his window in the Mission at 4:40 A.M. by a group of parishioners with guitars led by our intrepid Director of Worship, Lupe Rios. I think I would have sprayed them with cold water at that time of the morning, but Fr. Luis, as kind as ever, took them in and rewarded them with pan dulces and hot chocolate, a traditional birthday treat in Mexico. We have ordered the icons for the Parish Chapel but I hear that everyone wants St. Anthony!! What is it about Anthony of Padua, even after eight hundred years, which makes him so popular? When I was in Ireland we had his feast day celebration on June 13

and the church was packed to the doors at Masses, morning and evening, in his honor. Everybody loves St. Anthony. He was, by all accounts, a gentle and humble person who was kindly and persuasive in his preaching and strong in his defense of the rights of the poor. Anyhow, only one person can buy the icon for the Chapel, but we do have St. Francis and St Clare as well as otherssolets talk!! Wishing you a peaceful week ahead,

Fr. Adrian

The Catechetical Minute Roman Missal Questions

What is the Preface? The preface is the actual beginning of the Eucharistic prayer. It is introduced by responses that are very ancient. This exchange of prayer between the celebrant and the people is in a sense a liturgical prayer of dialogue; it is as though the people complete the prayers of the priest. The celebrant prays: The Priest raising his hands, continues: Lift up your hearts The people: We lift them up to the Lord In the next set of responses the celebrant invites the people to join in the Eucharist (a word that means thanksgiving) as he asks them to give thanks to God to which they respond It is right and just. The language of the prayer now changes; it is reflecting the transition, that the celebrant is now directly acknowledging the people in whose name he prays to God. Over and over we hear how we are directed to fulfill our duty as Gods chosen people. This language comes out of the Roman heritage of the Missal, which is deeply law-bound. The invitation leads us to enter into the great prayer of thanksgiving together. Every Preface reaches conclusion in the acclimation of the Holy, Holy, Holy. The first part of this well known hymn is from the prophet Isaiah 6:3 describing the first vision before the throne of God. This ancient text was used by the Jewish people during the Synagogue Liturgy, the Kedusha, before the opening of the ark holding the Torah. The second part, beginning with the word Blessed is taken from Matthew 21:9 describing Jesus entry into Jerusalem. The Holy, Holy, Holy is truly a Hymn and where possible should always be sung. In the next article on this question, the core Prayers of the Preface and the reasons for the 49 Prefaces that are found in the Order of the Mass will be covered. Bill Bischoff, Director of Catechetical Ministry

Message of St. Francis for Contemporary Society July 6 8, 2012 With Brother Mark Schroder, OFM
The relevance of St. Francis and the actions of Franciscan women and men for over 800 years can help us address the challenges that modern society brings to us. Political advertisements and media hype as elections near can confuse us. Franciscans (and others) cry out for us to uphold the common good, to better the lives of people caught in poverty and to bring respect to our Mother Earth. We will put a Franciscan-spin onto this by prayerfully using Scripture, art, contemplation and a sense of humor. Brother Mark is living at the St. Francis Friary in Sacramento. He is working at a non-profit agency that provides housing options for homeless folks. He lived for seven years at Mission San Luis Rey, moving three years ago. This retreat begins with dinner Friday at 6:00pm and ends with lunch on S unday. Check-in from 4:00pm6:00pm. Private single room $225; Shared room $180 pp; Commuter $130 pp. Pre-register online or call the Retreat Office at 760-757 -3659/ www.sanluisrey.org

Padre Adrian Peelo, ofm

NOTA CATEQUITICA
