If you are looking for a new canine
friend that would take a bullet for
you, Studly is your man! Studly,
a 3 year old neutered American
Bulldog/Pit bull Terrier cross, came
to the shelter after he was found in
the Rossland area.
Studly is really a one of a kind dog.
He has a short white and tan coat,
and has a very muscular frame.
He is more wide than tall, with a
handsomely large head!
Studly is in need of a new forever
home, where his owner is
experienced in his type of breed.
He is in need of training, especially
on the leash, as he is very strong
and has quite the pull. He is very
dominant with other dogs, so he
cannot go to a home where other
dogs live.
Preferably, he would do best in
an area with a lower population
of neighbour dogs, as he reacts
poorly with them. He is very sweet
to people and is well loved by the
staf. After he bonds with you and
your home, socialization training
with other dogs would be a big
beneft for him, but will take time
and patience. He has grown up
with a mouthing habit, which has
never been corrected. He likes to
nip in play and when excited, but
doesnt know his own strength. His
new mom and dad need to know
how to teach him to stop that habit.
Children and Studly may not mix
if the kids are too young. He does
get very excited and he is so strong,
that he may intimidate your young
children.

needs that Studly has, we would

Market Fest Kicks Of!
West Kootenay EcoSociety announced a star-studded
lineup this week for the kickof of the Market Fest season
on Friday, June 29. Te street festival will feature Vancou-
vers Blackberry Wood and a lineup of local favorites that
appeal to every audience. Samba drumming, folk dan-
cing, and a kids tent round out a jam packed schedule that
also features over 90 vendors selling everything from hot
food to local produce.
Te family-friendly street party will start of with the
Moving Mosaic Samba Band, and will feature perform-
ances by Rusty Water and the Broken Troubadours, Rip-
pin Rattles, and Roxy on the Stanley Stage presented by
the Nelson District Credit Union. Folk Fusion Dance,
Blackberry Wood, and Gisto will grace the Kootenay
Stage, presented by the Royal.
Were excited about this years Market Fest lineup, and
we are convinced that the weather will smile on us, said
Jesse Woodward, Markets Director for EcoSociety. Mar-
ket Fest is more than just a fundraiser for EcoSocietys
community programs its also a celebration of regional

Te Trail Garden Club
Since the Trail Garden Clubs frst meeting in September
of 2010, its membership has risen to nearly 50 enthusiastic
gardeners.
Te Executive Committee meets a couple times in Au-
gust to plant the next seasons topics and speakers. In
the past two years, members shared and learned about:
Planting for spring colour (ie bulbs); soil composition and
amendments; perennials propagating by division and
layering; complete yard and garden design; lawns, from
seed to sod; how to prune almost anything; garden pests
from bugs to blights; planning and planting hanging bas-
kets we got to take home a fnished basket so that was
hugely appreciated!
Speakers in the past have included: Bill Garnett of Col-
umbia Valley Greenhouses in Trail and
Castlegar; Chris Holt of Lakewood
Landscapes in Nelson; Holly Pender-
Love who instructed at the College of
the Rockies; Marian Ackerman gar-
dener extraordinaire; and Annette Gal-
latin, Journeyman Landscape Gardener
who, with her husband Allan, owned a
nursery, garden centre and landscape
business in Alberta for 18 years.
Te group has a fundraising plant
sale every May, selling potted plants
donated by its members. Marian
Ackerman lined up tables end-to-end
in her yard. Her canny eye noticed
that many plants were really large so
she divided and potted 289 new plants
and added them to the others. Tat
helped our sales reach nearly $1000!
So far, $500 of it was donated to our
local Food Bank and $450 to the Re-
lay for Life. Marian continues to care
for and sell plants at her home and the
resulting funds will also go to a worthy
cause. Yay Marian!

New Legislation Passed
For Dental Hygienists
A Dental Hygienist is educated
and trained in their profession
with a focus on the prevention of
oral disease and the promotion of
oral health. In BC, the legislation
permits a dental hygienist to own
and operate their own dental hy-
giene practice.
But what many of you may not
have been aware of is the following:
Currently in BC, a Registered
Dental Hygienist CAN NOT pro-
vide any dental hygiene services
for you if you have NOT been to
your dentist for an exam within the
last 365 days.
However, on March 31, 2012
the Minister of Health, Honour-
able Mike de Jong announced new
legislation in regards to the 365
Day Rule.
Registered Dental Hygienists
that meet additional education
and experience requirements must
apply for and be granted permis-
sion in order to qualify to work in
this category. If your Registered
Dental Hygienist is approved they
will then be able to prove YOU
with Dental Hygienist services
EXEMPT from the 365 Day Rule.
Tis legislation comes into efect
July 3, 2012 and we hope it will in-
crease the publics access to dental
hygiene services.
