manner, which can be refer to as an inventory. Businesses must know the quantity or volume and value of the product it has to market. With this information a business can decide on a competitive selling price. The first issue a business has to decide relative to establishing an inventory system is whether to use the perpetual inventory system or the periodic inventory system. Under either of these systems large retail organizations like Wal-Mart designed their own technology to make tracking of sales, quantity of goods stock in the warehouse, monitor delivery, purchase order to determine production order and delivery time to meet their demand. Wal-Mart like most large retailers has developed its inventory system from time to time with the hope of competing in technology. Most of these retailers have graduated from the barcode system. Wal-Mart recently introduces what is call the (EPC) Electronic Product Code initiative. This system streamlines distribution and gain efficiencies. The (EPC) introduce by Wal-Mart uses the (RFID) Radio Frequency Identification which tracks items from manufacturing to distribution centers and its stores. The benefit of this system to Wal-Mart is Multifaceted (www.alien technology.com). This system enables Wal-Mart to replenished tagged out of stock Item up three times faster than non tagged item. Advantage and Disadvantages The (RFID) Radio Frequency Identification is an automated identification that applies radio frequency to monitor stocks which include keeping track of their description and location. This technology for tracking stock has begun to replace the barcode system. The Radio Frequency Identification has an Always on property policy which means the location of all products in the chain is known at all times (www.ehow.com). With the (RFID) what is called the line of sight reading will not be needed since the technology uses radio frequency to identify a product tag. This non-line of sight property can provide information about a product location, design and history, making inventory tracking more efficient. It also informs a retail outlet once the last piece of a product is purchased, and prevent out of stock occurrences. Another advantage is that the (RFID) tags are almost impossible to duplicate. Which means data stored in those tag cannot be copy since this automated identification technology is always on. The (RFID) is very effective in guarding fraud and theft. The (RFID) tags are robust so they can withstand harsh environment, including exposure to acid. The (RFID) technology has long been available, but it was not enjoyed in every outlet because of the technology production and operating cost. The (RFID tags and their components are more expensive than the material and equipment used in a barcode system. Since (RFID) operate like a wireless network, the system may have area weak signal. Its also possible that the system may experience interference from other source signal. And interference from other source might impair the (RFID).
