Arizona State University (Mars Space Flight Facility) Systems Manager Tempe, AZ Mar 2002 Current
Provided mission-critical Unix and system support for the Mars Space Flight Facility, a NASA/JPL funded space research center. Served as manager and technical lead for building, maintaining and managing the entire facility infrastructure including more than 50 Linux and Sun workstations and servers, and enterprise level storage systems. Managed 2 full-time and 2 part-time direct report system administrators, assigned tasks and priorities, and mentored student workers, several of whom have gone on to work for Google, Epic, and the USGS. Developed, installed, and maintained Linux clusters (more than 200 CPUs), including providing support to external users. Managed upgrades and installations such that no operational processes or in-progress missions were impacted. Maintained and supported more than 300TB of irreplaceable scientific data. Defined hardware requirements and worked with vendors to identify the cost-effective solutions that did not sacrifice stability or data integrity. Developed and maintained LDAP and Kerberos centralized authorization and authentication system to support access to the data by both internal and external users, and in keeping with NASA/JPL security requirements. Designed server room improvements including UPS/power, HVAC/cooling and access security to conform to NASA-specified protocols. Provided direction and guidance for growth of computing facilities including cluster and storage upgrades. Collaborated with scientific and engineering staff to determine future project needs and to plan growth. Proposed and revised technology budgets for NASA/JPL missions. Appointed to multiple mandatory Peer Review Panels for other NASA projects.
Provided business-critical Unix and system support for managed customers. Managed system security, maintenance, upgrades, and user/customer training, maintaining overall responsibility for the success of customer interactions. Supported Solaris Unix machines as web, database, and application servers. Maintained customer Internet environments including software and hardware load balancers, ethernet switching equipment, firewalls, and VPN solutions for managed hosting customers. 3rd Tier buck stops here support for managed hosting customers. Supported Tier II as emergency On-Call escalation support and served as trainer/mentor for Tier II personnel. Technical Lead (customer technical point of contact and internal technical team lead) for large-scale enterprise customers such as H&R Block Financial, American Express, Pioneer Investments, and Citizens Bank.
Upgraded and managed business-critical Sun Solaris web servers for internal business units. Developed and implemented streamlined administration applications to more efficiently support end-users, developers, quality assurance staff, and project managers. Maintained department and corporate division firewalls in multiple countries for compliance auditing. Developed Linux support systems and infrastructure. Participated in project to implement Redhat Linux on the IBM S/390 mainframe. Acted as emergency On-Call escalation support on a regular basis.

Managed integration of eight separate Internet Service Providers (ISPs) throughout the Western United States into a single provider. Developed hardware and software vendor relationships and advised senior management on network upgrades and business plans of each of the individual ISPs, resulting in substantially lower operating costs. Designed and implemented enterprise-wide mail, domain name registrations/DNS, and web servers for integration and corporate name change resulting in significant cost savings. Provided technical disclosure services for company acquisitions involving investigating the computer systems of potential purchases.
Managed day-to-day environment for the dedicated access Network Operations Center. Coordinated staff of more than 20 employees to maintain a fully staffed 24-by-7 Network Operations Center, supporting over 3,000 distinct dedicated-circuit customers. Designed, implemented and maintained a Sun Solaris Autoclient server/FRU client system for the Phoenix Operations Center. This system was so successful that other managers requested the same Autoclient setup for Sunnyvale Network Computing Center (NCC). Built and maintained various Sun Microsystems Sparc server and Linux systems for internal and customer use.
