I. INTRODUCTION It is a sad thing to note that across learning areas, Mathematics has been regarded as the lowest performing

subject in the National Achievement Test conducted annually by the Department of the Education. Several factors have been pointed out to be among the cause of such rating. However, nothing has changed instead it has remained at the bottom. It has always been the practice of the school to keep records on the academic achievements of the pupils in the learning areas. It is to keep track the profiles of the pupils with regards to performance in each field. This is one way of studying on how to improve instruction to cope up with the pressing concern on low performance especially in Mathematics as it is shown in the recent National

Achievement Test results. Aside from teachers guidance on where she/he is in her/his skills as a mentor, it also serves as the

background to do innovations in teaching. The recording of test results is done by all teachers as a requirement set by the guidance coordinator. Every rating period, there is the so-called periodical test results to be submitted to

the office for the records in accomplishing further study on what to do with the results. Mathematics as a subject is carried out with a time allotment of sixty (60) minutes from grades one to six with extra effort in order to deliver the skills to the pupils with maximum mastery. It is among the goals of the teacher to let the pupils master the skills so that these children can get 75% PL or more. Certain techniques and strategies in teaching are always given emphasis to improve

instructions in all learning areas so that by the end of each grading period, pupils can achieve more than what is expected of them. II. TEST RESULTS A. The table shows the average periodical test results of pupils who achieved 75% proficiency level in Mathematics. It can be shown on the table that grade one pupils got the highest number of pupils with a total of 322. In terms of proficiency level, grade one pupils achieved an increase of +55 points, grade two pupils achieved an increase of +42 points, grade three pupils got an increase of +46 points, grade four pupils got an increase of +47 points, grade five pupils got a total of +57 points increase and grade six pupils got a total of +21 points increase respectively. The results shown seem to be very impressive because the proficiency level of the pupils in DJAL is increasing. The result is contradictory to the performance of Grade Six pupils in the National Achievement Test. It can be implied that the skills being mastered by the pupils in the school do not meet the competencies structured in the NAT.

Teachers should revisit the Philippine Elementary Learning Competencies so that they can initiate programs which can help in promoting better performance in the NAT. The school should also guide teachers in designing strategies that can alter the pupils performance so that teachers and pupils alike can be motivated to perform their tasks well and even do an extra effort to achieve the desired goals.

The table shows the average periodical test results in MPS in Mathematics from grades one to six. On the average, pupils got 71.69 on the first grading, 73.52 on the second grading, 74.22 on the third grading and 76.63 on the fourth grading respectively. Of all the grade level, it is the grade two level who got the highest MPS of 76.09 and grade six level got the lowest MPS of 69.80 while the rest of the grade levels got an average MPS of 75.12 (Grade I), 75.49 (Grade III), 73.33 (Grade IV), 74.28 (Grade V). Grade Six has the least percentage of MPS with a

percentile score of 69.80. From this result, it can be implied compared that to the the grade other six skills skills in the are more difficult The

lower

grades.

skills are preparing students to venture their education in the secondary level. On the other hand, skills in the grade six are more complicated since they are indulged with the different formulas necessary in solving problems.

III. CONCLUSION The recent results in Mathematics in Doa Juana Actub Lluch Memorial Central School have reached the minimum

passing level of 75% which is across learning areas. It is obviously a good job for the teachers handling the subject for achieving the results that are above the proficiency level. The strategies instruction and is techniques effective in of teachers sense in of

delivering

the

bringing efficiency in almost all of the skills per grading period. On the other hand, DEAR Program of the school has caused much on the significant results in MPS and PL. The dedication of teachers is a requirement per se in order to achieve better results each year. Mastery can be achieved through constant practice and these practices must start on the earliest part of the school year and will commence on the final grading period. In doing so, Mathematics teachers can innovate ways on how to teach the subject in way that pupils might learn from it.

It is also a need for the school to work hand in hand with the teachers in studying the problems encountered by the teachers in teaching mathematics. School administrators must never stop educating the teachers by sending them to trainings and seminars to improve their skills. Aside from the school principals interferences, parents should also take part in shaping the minds of their children. Learning can be very effective if all the stakeholders take their roles religiously. It is no longer accepted that learning is only relied on the hands of the teachers due to the burn- outs that teachers are facing. The following are the suggested activities that will help alleviate the dismal performance of the pupils in DJAL particularly in Mathematics: Functional Mathematics Room Functional Mathematics Park Monthly Mathematics Activities Creation of Mathematics Club (working) Updated textbooks and workbooks Staff development in Mathematics Close monitoring on the performance of Mathematics Pupils Performance Output should be documented
