THE MORIAH SENIORS SPECIAL HIDDEN HARBOR BOAT TOUR Tuesday, June 5, 2012
An article submitted by Mr. Hy Gershon, one of Moriahs devoted and active members On a bright sunny morning, the Moriah Seniors were taken on an exciting, delightful and informative boat ride. This was no ordinary cruise, but a unique tour of New Yorks Working Waterfront, something that most New Yorkers have never seen, or probably never knew existed. This tour was sponsored by Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer. The mission of the Working Harbor Committee that made this event possible is to strengthen awareness of the working harbors history and vitality today by: * Involving people in learning how the harbor works and what it does * Educating people in the rich and challenging history of the harbor * Making people aware of the need to build and sustain the working harbor Our Seniors filled two minibuses to capacity as we proceeded downtown to Pier 83, where we boarded our Tour Boat and headed south down the Hudson River. We were given a running commentary about the history of this river and the harbor it empties into. We were told that it is actually two rivers that join and was called The North River by the Dutch before the English took over. This city was a busy seaport even in ancient times. It was the original location of the banking industry. We passed the Brooklyn Bridge, originally known as the East River Bridge, opened in 1883, followed by the Manhattan Bridge, opened in 1909. The third bridge we passed was the Williamsburg Bridge, opened in 1899. Our Tour Boat took us past the Brooklyn Navy Yard, which was busy at boat building during the Civil War. We learned that Williamsburg was once one of the richest areas in the United States, with many industries. We were told that it is actually where the Industrial Revolution took place. At first, the wealthy were desirous of residing away from the river itself because of the pollution, the slums, etc. As a result, they all moved inland. Then, about 150 years later they saw all the advantages of living by the rivers edge and they moved back, causing Williamsburg to have a revival, as it is today. On our return trip we passed Lower Manhattan, the Wall Street Area and the site of the World Trade Center. Standing above all is the tall structure, still incomplete, known as the FREEDOM TOWER. When it is completed, in the near future, it will consist of no less than 1776 feet in height! It truly represents our freedom! It is no wonder that NEW YORK HARBOR is called THE SIXTH BOROUGH!

Collecting Matisse and Modern Masters: The Cone Sisters of Baltimore

As daughters of prosperous German-Jewish immigrants, the Cone sisters were well-educated and widely traveled. In Paris, Claribel and Etta spent time with the doyenne of the Parisian avantgarde, Gertrude Stein, and her brother Leo, who influenced their collecting. The Steins introduced them to Picasso and Matisse and the sisters became friends and patrons of both artists. In travels across Europe and expeditions to Africa and Asia, they also acquired textiles and decorative arts. Collecting Matisse and Modern Masters: The Cone Sisters of Baltimore featured over 50 of these works of artincluding paintings, sculptures and works on paper by Matisse, Picasso, Gauguin, Renoir, van Gogh, Pissarro, Courbet and moreon loan from The Baltimore Museum of Art. In addition to modern masterpieces, the exhibition included textiles and decorative arts from Europe, Asia and Africa that the Cones collected, as well as photographs and archival materials to highlight the remarkable lives of these Jewish sisters.

Join us for a 45 Minute Slide Presentation highlighting this remarkable collection

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT FOR OUR SENIOR VETERANS THE HONOR FLIGHT NETWORK
The Honor Flight Networks mission statement is to Transport America's veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit those memorials dedicated to honor their service and sacrifices. Their goal is to help every single veteran in America, willing and able of getting on a plane or a bus, visit THEIR memorial. Top priority is given to America's most senior heroes survivors of World War II and any veteran with a terminal illness who wishes to visit THEIR memorial. The program will naturally transition to Korean War, Vietnam War and all other veterans who served, on a chronological basis. Since America felt it was important to build a memorial to the service and the ultimate sacrifice of her veterans, the Honor Flight Network believes it is equally important that they actually get to visit and experience THEIR memorial. This program began in 2005 and helped 137 veterans and has grown to the point in which last year the Network safely transported 18,055 veterans to see THEIR memorials at no cost to the veterans! They also provide trained guardians who personally escort the veterans on the aircraft and accompany them to the memorials throughout the day. If you or someone you know is a WWII veteran and would like information about applying for a free trip to visit the memorials in Washington, D.C., please inquire in the Moriah office.
