Your Name: Jennifer Marrott Lesson Title: Computing Simple Interest Introduction: Show credit cards and talk about buying something on credit. Compare with saving money in a bank for a car. Content Area and Grade or Age Level of Students: 7th grade mathematics Objectives: Students will be able to apply the formula for computing simple interest as evidenced by accurate computations on the independent practice assignment. Standards Addressed: 7.RP.3. Use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratios and percent problems. Examples: simple interest, tax, markups and markdowns, gratuities and commissions, fees, percent increase and decrease, percent error. Relative Advantage: Brain Pop video will increase student interest and motivation and will be available to students at home if they need to view it again for clarification or additional instruction. Brain Pop also has activities, quiz, FYI, and Q&A links to build interest and for practice. Timeline: 1 45 minute class period Materials: Holt McDougal Mathematics Course 2 book, math tool kit (for note taking), group work worksheet, Brain Pop video, independent practice assignment

Grouping Strategies: Group activity will be done with elbow partners. Learning Activities: 1) Introduce topic by showing credit card and explaining how it works. Compare to saving money in a savings account at a bank so you can buy a car. 2) Show Brain Pop video. In this video, Tim and his robot friend, Moby, explore interest. It covers simple and compound interest. It shows how to use the simple interest formula. It is used to introduce the concept and build interest for the students. information to support the content. Refer students to CCSS 7.RP.3 and discuss todays learning objective. Focus studnets on simple interest. Note taking and plenary discussion Practice with elbow partner. Review worksheet as a whole. Address questions. Give independent practice assignment. (Lesson 6-7 pg 364: #7-25 odds only) Exit ticket for daily formative assessment.

Assessment: Exit Ticket with the following question: Julian deposits $4,500 in a bank account that pays 3% simple interest annually. How much interest will he earn in 5 years? Adaptations for Learners with Special Needs: For group activity, these students will be with the instructor for small group intervention.
