VITUNIVERSITY Foundedin1984asVelloreEngineeringCollege,the institutewasdeclaredasaUniversityinrecognition ofitsacademicexcellencebytheMinistryofHuman Resources Development, Government of India in 2001 and was renamed VIT University. The University has since grown by leaps and bounds establishing excellent infrastructure replete with stateofart laboratories, digital library, smart class rooms,hostels,gyms,swimmingpools,auditoria,in door and outdoor stadiums spread over 350 acre ecofriendly campus. To fulfill the vision of the founder and chancellor, Dr. G. Viswanathan, VIT today comprises nine constituent schools and interdisciplinary centers offering graduate, post graduate and research programs up to Ph.D level. Of the 17,000 students, largely residential, nearly one fourth is women. About 1100 qualified faculty members and 1000 administrative staff facilitate the process of shaping the students professionals with a holisticattitude. VIT is the first educational institution in India to get international accreditationsforitsprogrammes.TheInstitutionof Engineering and Technology (IET), United Kingdom and the Energy Institute, United Kingdom have auditedtheTeachingLearningProcessesatVITand accredited the respective programmes, in the year 2004. The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology(ABET)ofUSAaccreditedfewprograms ofVITUniversity.ABETaccreditationisanassurance that the university programme meets the quality standardsestablishedbytheprofessionforwhichit prepares its students. VIT University obtained the highestpossiblegradeof"A"fromNAACforallthe programs offered by the University during the re accreditation process in January 2009. Multinational companies such as Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) have accredited VIT to the highest

level enabling VIT students to earn higher starting salary scales.VIT has 80 MoUs with institutions in India and from countries like Australia, Canada, France,Germany,UKandUSAinvariousdisciplines towards exchange of faculty and students, joint programsinvolvingcoursesaswellasresearchand improvementoflaboratoryandlibraryfacilities. SCHOOL OF BIO SCIENCES AND TECHNOLOGY (SBST) SBST of VIT University offers B. Tech, M. Tech, M. Sc, M.S (by Research) and Ph.D programmes in Biosciences, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, BiomedicalEngineeringandmanyotheralliedareas. SBST has adequate infrastructure and experienced facultymembersforcarryingoutteaching,research and developmental activities in different areas of Biotechnology. Major areas of research include Molecular Genetics, Clinical Genetics, Plant Biotechnology, Microbiology and Microbial technology, Cancer Biology, Bioinformatics, Bioprocess Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Environmental Biotechnology and Immuno Technology. The School has been identified recently,forsupportundertheFISTprogramofDST (Govt.ofIndia). ABOUTTHEWORKSHOP Lifescienceandinformation sciencearetwomajor fronts of the science advancement in the 21st century. Biotechnology and Bioinformatics play important roles in todays scientific discovery. This workshop aims to provide a good platform for highersecondaryschoolstudentstounderstandthe basic theory of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics anditsapplicationsinthedevelopmentofcountry.
