In school, I have always heard of people saying that they despise English as it is not their mother tongue to begin

with and they start to ask themselves why bother studying English. Why English? Well, my answer to that question is why not English? Even though our countrys national language is Malay, we must not isolated ourselves within our own borders. In order to improve our glorious nation, we must venture out and embrace the globe as we know it. Yet all this will be mere bubbles of dreams if we do not master the English language. The easiest way to improve ourselves is to acquire new skills and add them to our repertoire, however how do you expect a person to learn new skills from a foreign country without being able to communicate with the local society there. Obviously, we cannot resort to the use of sign language because how far can sign language bring us when it comes to more intricate and complicated matters. Surely, the best way for us to learn is by asking questions and for that to occur we must be able to mutter out English. I would expect you as the readers of this article wanting to debate with me on the trivial matter of using other languages as a mean of communication. I myself did not and will not denounce the use of other languages; as a matter of fact I actually encourage people to learn up foreign languages to further enhance their conversing abilities. However in this fleetingly expanding world where economy is of utmost importance to any country, English is required for countries of different nations to communicate and interact. Whether you like it or not, English is still and will continue to be the top-notch language in the world. Although many people speculate that Chinese will replace English as the worlds universal language, I find that reality hard to be realized in the recent future because despite the overwhelming numbers of Chinese speakers in the entire globe, Chinese as far as I know exists as a formal governing language only in places like China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Besides this other places, Chinese is only as an alternative language coexisting with the main language of the particular country. Do you think it will be likely for nations like Germany and France to abdicate their national language and pave the way for Chinese to take over? No, of course not! Such is not the case with English; English is the binding agent which binds the whole of Europe along with the rest of the world. Almost 80% of all European countries have English as their second language. Isnt that proof enough of the importance of English in the world? Zooming into our own country, the importance of English has not been reduced at all. In a multinational country like ours, English will be able to serve as a basis for the culmination of unity in the various races which constitutes our magnificent country. English is the second language for all races and can be used as a tool to break down the interracial differences. This is due to the fact that everyone must learn English in their primary and secondary education. As a result, people of different races will be able to communicate in spite of their language barriers. As time moves on, a solid relationship will be built between them and their own languages can be used to replace English as a method of communication after they have fully understand each others cultures. English also plays a pivotal role in the educational field. Throughout the globe, research in many various fields has been executed mostly by the eastern part of the world. Therefore, it is not a surprise for such vital knowledge to be spread to the world in English. In my opinion, subjects such as Science and Mathematics are best learn under the usage of English as it is the language which the language has originated from. When the specific terms are translated into another language such as Chinese, you cannot help to wonder a little awkward feeling that something is wrong. Although insignificant, this might prove to hinder a childs ability to learn new things and in turn affect the future of our nation. As a conclusion, English proves itself to be a very important medium of education. In a nutshell, English is all but useless. It has taken many years of improvement for it to climb up from its humble origins as a tribal language in the Germanic tribes of England to a language which is almost practiced by more than 75% of the global population. English is a language both respected and revered by all who knows it due to its sheer depth and versatility. It is only fair for us to continue to use it and preach on its deeds towards human kind.
