Steve Mostyn is a Houston personal injury trial lawyer specializing in hurricane lawsuits. He has become extremely rich off the losses of others in the wake of damaging storms. Mostyn is also the largest donor to liberal Democrats in Texas. He supports President Barack Obama and frequently hosts fundraising events in his Houston home for liberal candidates and causes one of which featured Nancy Pelosi and another of which raised money for the Texas Senates most liberal member, Wendy Davis of Fort Worth. Mostyn has now employed a former SREC member, Mark McCaig, to create a series of front groups with conservative-sounding names such as Texans for Individual Rights and Conservative Voters of Texas. These groups have two goals: to prop up the few Republican candidates who are friendly to the personal injury trial lawyer agenda, and to attack TLR. Yes, Steve Mostyn, who funded more than ten million dollars in just the 2010 election to attack Governor Rick Perry and other conservative Republican candidates, is now trying to infiltrate Republican primaries and conventions. Mostyn is using a defeated, former SREC member, Mark McCaig, to do it. McCaig, who has been denounced by Young Conservatives of Texas and other conservative groups, is not only Mostyns Trojan Horse in Republican circles, he is an employee at The Mostyn Law Firm.

Just this year, Mostyn and his cronies engaged in three critical State Senate races in the Republican primary:

Kelly Hancock vs. Todd Smith in SD 9. TLR PAC supported Hancock. The trial lawyers contributed $529,276 to Smith, who is himself a personal injury trial lawyer. Hancock defeated Smith by 65% to 35%. Larry Taylor vs. Dave Norman in SD 11. TLR PAC supported Taylor. The trial lawyers spent $1,034,418 against Taylor because Taylor, as Co-chairman of an important legislative oversight committee, exposed the excessive fees paid to Mostyn by the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association. Larry Taylor won with 58% of the vote. Elizabeth Ames Jones, Donna Campbell and Jeff Wentworth in SD 25. TLR PAC supported Jones. The trial lawyers contributed $713,254 to Wentworth. Wentworth has held public office for thirty years. He is radically pro-choice and solidly aligned with the personal injury trial lawyers. He received only 35.77% of the vote and is now in a run-off with Donna Campbell, who is an emergency room physician, a principled conservative and someone who understands the importance of a fair and balanced civil justice system to job creation and access to health care.

The next time you see material attacking TLR, please consider the source of the attack. Look behind the conservative-sounding name, and ask who is funding the attack.
