On July 5, 2012 at approximately 4:23 p.m., members of the Longmont Police Department responded to a three car hit and run accident at 17th Ave and Pace St. Arrestee Gary Sheats fled the scene in his Dodge Durango and was later arrested in the driveway to his home in the 1200 block of Winslow Cir. Initial information shows Sheats was traveling south on Pace St., entering the intersection to 17th Ave. Sheats and a second car, which was traveling east bound on 17th Ave collided in the intersection. After this collision, the second car struck a third car stopped in the west bound left turn lane of 17th Ave. The driver and passenger of the second care were injured. The driver, a 27 year old pregnant mother is currently in critical condition and has lost her baby. Her mother, a 48 year old female also suffered serious injuries and the drivers 5 year old boy had minor injuries. There were no injuries to the occupants of the third vehicle. Sheats has been charged with two felony counts of vehicular assault, one felony count of leaving the scene of an accident after causing injuries, leaving the scene of an accident, driving under the influence, driving under the influence with a BAC greater than .08, driving under the Influence with three or more prior arrests, disregarding a traffic control device, driving while drivers License is under restraint, possession of less than 1 oz marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Sheats has been transferred to the Boulder County Jail. Sheatss arrest photo is attached as a separate jpg. The Longmont Police Department is still seeking witnesses who may have observed this accident.
