Applying Andrew Goodwins Theory to a music video:

Track: For the First Time Artist: The Script Director: Jonathan Kasdan Genre: Alternative Rock

Relationship between the lyrics and visuals:

As the lyrics are and we are drinking cheap bottles of wine the camera shows the two characters drinking alcohol whilst being playful and having a good time.

Here is another good example of there being relationship between the lyrics and visuals, as the lyrics say crying till we are close to tears the camera shows the women crying whilst writing the letter home, emphasising she misses home.

Relationship between music and visuals:

Towards the end of the music video when the tempo of the song begins to slow down, this allows the audience to focus on the characters emotions, which is sad and the black silhouette helps to portray an emotional moment. We can visually see the male character, which is surrounded by the day coming to an end which links in with the slow tempo and depressing moment.

Particular music videos have their own music style and iconography (codes and conventions):

Alternative rock music videos generally contains a love story narrative which may have some difficulties within it, these can be both positive and negative. The first photo shows the couple being playful and having a good time, however

the bottom photo is in black and white composition and this is shown frequently when the couple have argued. In addition, the use of a black and white composition within the performance scene is typical to an alternative rock music video because it has a strong narrative.

Often due to the demands of the record label, artists videos will include many close ups of the artist and will often develop motifs that repeat throughout the video this allows the band to promote their image.

Here are a few close up and extreme close up shots from the music video in various angles, this emphasising the artists emotions due to the strong narrative. We never actually see the vocalist directly, only at the end of the music video which creates a mystery throughout the video.

A frequently notion of looking:

There is no reference to the notion of looking through screens; however in this photo above it shows the main character looking, creating a sense of loneliness. There is also no voyeuristic treatment of the female body as it doesnt fit within this genre of music

Intertextual references from other forms of media e.g. films, television series, music videos etc:

The script got their inspiration from realising the recession, people are losing their jobs and their valuable things, therefore many people could relate the lyrics and music video.
