Notes From the Pastor: I hope everybody had a wonderful Independence Day celebration and also an opportunity to reflect on our God given gift of freedom and how we have used it in our lives. It is the use of this freedom that we can be held accountable for all our actions as individuals and as a parish community. In the past two weekends I laid out the situation of our parish, both the bright side and the gray area which I call challenges. I have said that those challenges no matter how hard have never discouraged me. I hope too that they will not discourage you. Let us rather entrust everything to Gods help. We need though to continue to do our part. The question at the moment is: what shall we do now and, as a parish, where are we going from here? This is the reason why I am pushing for a formulation of a parish mission statement. Like any other mission statements, it would serve to give direction to all short and long range planning. A mission statement states the reason the parish community exists, refers to the roots from which it comes, relates distinctive parish characteristics, communicates the nature of the service the parish intends to offer, provides future direction for the parish to which the diocese and the broader society may hold the parish accountable, uses key words that are rich in meaning to the group, is brief, usually under fifty words The Mission Statement enables the parish to establish priorities, to make policies and to use resources in such a fashion that reflects the challenge of the Mission Statement. Yes, Christ has already given us the mission. The parish mission statement is based on the mission Christ has entrusted us and is more specific to our own parish. To preserve the integrity of Gods given mission, the formulating process must be grounded in faith which will allow Parish Pastoral Council members to discern the will of the Holy Spirit for the parish. Thats why we will do it in a recollection setting. July 28, Saturday, from 9 to 2PM, lunch provided, is our Parish Mission Statement recollection at the Saint Michael Social Hall. We are blessed with Fr. Ken Van Haverbeke, the director of the Spiritual Life Center in Wichita to guide us in this recollection and in formulating our Mission Statement. Summer Heat: Hotter Than Hell? No, not really. I agree with most, that this has been unusually hot weather, but to say its hotter than hell would be a huge exaggeration! Others say that its a sign of global warming, whatever that means. We do know two things for certain: 1) this is definitely one of our hottest summers; 2) it is not as hot as Hell, if you want to believe Jesus, in Mark: 9:43 and 9:47, where he spoke of hell, the unquenchable fire, where the worm doe not die, and the fire is not quenched. Jesus came to call all of us to sin no more, and to warn those who continue in sin that they will come to eternal destruction. No one goes to hell accidentally, and no one is predestined for hell. God gives each of us enough grace to save ourselves so if anyone winds up in hell, it means he deliberately turned his back on God. He made created things more important than God. The Church has solemnly confirmed the teaching that punishment in hell is eternal. Mother Church is simply being faithful to Christs teachings. The great St. Augustine said it best, as a warning for all of us: You, who believe what you like in the Gospel, and do not believe what you do not like, believe in yourselves instead of in the Gospel. What Jesus taught must be taken seriously by all of us, yet polls show that only 40% of the people in the U.S. believe in the reality of hell. That 60% who question hell need to read Jesus words to Pilate from John 18:37, Anyone committed to the truth hears my voice. God wishes our salvation, but doesnt force it. He gave us free will to choose or reject Him. God gives us power to reform our lives up to the moment of death, but as we die, so we remain. We make the choice. God doesn't send us to hell, we send ourselves by choosing a way that is apart from God. Its not too late as long as we have life. Its hot now, but could get hotter. Article by Marcel Normand
