Defining PR

PR is the art of communication for corporate gain. The methods and activities employed to establish and promote a favorable relationship with the public. The degree of success obtained in achieving a favorable relationship with the public. Public relations is the art and science of managing communication between an organization and its key publics to build, manage and sustain its positive image. PR is a planned effort to influence opinion through good character and responsible performance based upon a mutually satisfactory two-way communication. -- Scott M. PR as a management function
Anticipating, analyzing and interpreting public opinion, attitudes, and issues that might impact, for good or ill, the operations and plans of the organization. Counseling management at all levels in the organization with regard to policy decisions, courses of action, and communications, taking into account their public ramifications and the organization's social or citizenship responsibilities. Researching, conducting, and evaluating, on a continuing basis, programs of action and communication to achieve the informed public understanding necessary to success of an organization's aims. These may include marketing, financial, fund raising, employee, community or government relations, and other programs. Planning and implementing the organization's efforts to influence or change public policy. Setting objectives, planning, budgeting, recruiting and training staff, developing facilities-in short, managing the resources needed to perform all of the above. INFORMATIVE PR educates your many publics about the kind of business you are in informs them about the issues your company or industry niche are dealing with, talks about the technological innovations, applications for your product or service confirms your companys or products position in the marketplace corrects misapprehensions about your company or business and gets your side of an issue before your publics in a positive way.
