STORY OF MONTEPULCIANO The town of Montepulciano has retained the characteristic features of its medieval origins to this day. The town centre emerged as a "Pearlm of the 16th Century" on a hill between the Val di Chiana and the Val d'Orcia. The exact origin of the name is not known for certain. In a document from 714 a "Castello Politiano" is mentioned. From then on "Mons Policianus" was the certain forerunner of Today's Montepulciano. the indipendent, but military weak community protected itself for about 700 years by alternating alliance with its mighty Tuscan neighbours, Florence and Siena until in 1511 the Policians formed an alliance with the Florentine Republic and subjected themselves to the rule of the Medicis. In the Middle Ages various noble families tried, by means of internal struggles, to sleize the throne of Montepulciano. Family prestige then was very important and it was almost as it there was a competition to produce the most magnificent public and private buildings to rival even Siena or Florence. In 1808 Napolen I put Montepulciano under Siena administration, which continued during Italy's history as a kingdom and is still the case today as a republic. The district of Montepulciano has some 14000 inhabitants and seven towns. The actual town called Montepulciano, is the administrative seat of the area, and has 5000 inhabitants. In order to protect the particular characteristics of the area, Montepulciano decided some time ago to avoid industrial development. Instead the agriculture, tourism and service sectors were developed. Throughout the Montepulciano district the unspoiled, natural ambience typical of the Tuscan hills can still be found.

ABOUT US In the middle of the 70's, individual wine connoisseurs in the Zurich region began to import their house wine from Montepulciano on an annual basis. In time, this circle of enthusiasts grew and the desire for our own vineyard took shape in our hearts and minds. In 1987, an existing vineyard came up for sale, much to the delight of a dozen Swiss enthusiast who did not hesitate to seize this wonderful and unique opportunity. Our enthusiasm for the Vino Nobile and our long-term plans for the future persuaded the vender to give us the contract. Canneto AG was founded in Zurich and took over the Azienda Agricola Canneto vineyard as its subsidiary. After obtaining the wine merchants' patent we could supply partners and friends with our "own" Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Our circle of customers gradually expanded to include our partners' friends and acquaintances. By using local, professional wine experts combined with the sales and marketing efforts of the partners, we try to obtain the best possible quality. At the same time we keep the pirce of our products reasonable. The enthusiasm of the amateurs and the passion for our Canneto is more alive than ever!

AZIENDA AGRICOLA CANNETO The Canneto vineyard lies on the western slopes of Montepulciano, near the wonderful church of Madonna di San Biagio, and has a long tradition of wine making. Since the purchase the current Swiss owners have restored the buildings with great respect for the rich wine growing tradition. A new wine cellar has been built, new machinery and equipment installed and the vines and olive trees have been pruned and when necessary replaced. The vines are grown on moderately heavy, pebbly mar soil between 350 and 400 metres above sea level. The vines are raised on predominantly south west facing slopes in a horizontal spurred cordon system. A further four hectares of land il devoted to the cultivation of olives extra virgin olive oil

WINE ENTHUSIAST Issue March 2010 90 Points Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva 2005 Fresh berry nuances come on the heels of spice. Chocolate and smoke. The wild berry presence is nicely difined and gives this Vino Nobile a fresh and youthful disposition. In the mouth, however, it shows the natural sophistication and complexity of this celebrated category of Tuscan wine.

WINE ENTHUSIAST Issue March 2010 86 Points Rosso di Montepulciano 2008 Red raspberry and ripe strawberry emerge from the nose of this well-priced Rosso di Montepulciano (with 20% Merlot). The wine is mature and slightly jammy but not in an overdone way. In fact, it will appeal to those who appreciate a slightly sweeter style.
